FORMER top Celtic managerial target Eddie Howe has emerged as favourite to take over as Newcastle boss.

Pressure is mounting on Steve Bruce after the St James’s Park club were sold for £300million by Mike Ashley to the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, chaired by multi-billionaire Mohammed Bin Salman, according to a report in the Daily Record.

The dramatic deal has been given the go-ahead and there is intense speculation surrounding the manager’s position with bookies already taking bets on the new gaffer. Bruce could learn his fate this weekend.

Howe, who has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth 15 months ago, has already been named as 7/4 favourite to take over the hot seat. CQN revealed a previous link between Howe and Newcastle back in March.

The Hoops made their move for the 43-year-old highly-rated coach in the summer as they searched for a replacement for Neil Lennon.

However, after months of discussions, the Parkhead hierarchy pulled the plug on the move and switched their interest to Ange Postecoglou who arrived in late June to bring a halt to the guessing game.

Steven Gerrard also gets a mention as a possible new gaffer and is listed at 20/1. Others such as Roberto Martinez, Frank Lampard and even man-of-many-clubs Jose Mourinho are also linked.
