Failure elsewhere cannot disguise abject Celtic challenge

1009

As the darkest clouds descend over Ibrox with news that medals in their trophy room have been poinded by sheriff officers, sentiment in our half of the city is no brighter.  Celtic’s best chance to win the league this season lies not in outpointing everyone else, or seeing their principle rivals lose 10 points, it is in the complete obliteration of Rangers, allowing us to take our chances with Motherwell, who can open up a six point gap between second and third against Celtic on Sunday.

Whatever the following weeks bring for Rangers, if Celtic winning the league is a consequence, we cannot allow the title to disguise the abject failure to be competitive so far this season.

    From Video Celts:

Charlie Richmond will referee Sunday’s Motherwell v Celtic clash at Fir Park- his third SPL appointment of the season.

Richmond was demoted alongwith Steve Conroy last season but has won his way back into favour.

The last time that he took charge of a Celtic match was in the 1-0 win away to Hibs in May 2010 when a Robbie Keane penalty settled the points with eight yellow cards dished out. Prior to that Richmond took charge of the 4-0 defeat at St Mirren which ended Tony Mowbray’s managerial reign.

Richmond also refereed Celtic’s 3-2 win at Motherwell in December 2009 when Aiden McGeady and substitute Marco Fortune scored spectacular goals.

Thursday’s Europa League tie will be refereed by Bruno Paixão from Portugal.

Scottish referees have again been ignored by UEFA for this week’s Champions League ties although eagle-eyed Willie Collum will be in charge of the AEK Athens-Lokomotiv Moscow match despite his appauling performance in the Aberdeen-Rangers game at the weekend.

Time to give youth a chance, if they’re goo enough they’re old enough.

So far this season the team have played their best games in Uefa, it seems to me they only turn up for european games, well, time for that to stop, time to give the second string their chance, players picking and choosing which games they turn up for is unacceptable. Its time to show them that. Kayal, Ki and Hooper out.

Oh I have it on good authority that currently Ki is winning the South Korean national hide and seek award, they cannot find him, they are showing some of the highlights on telly, he has become so good at it they think he’s cheating by taking lessons from David Blane, regularly diappearing in front of 50 000+ crowds, the sun are introducing a new ‘wheres ki’ game for kids in their fun page.

  3. Fed-up hearing about…..the huns and their tax issue’s on all of the Celtic fans web-sites….

you know what….I think the huns will go into administration, take the 10 point hit and….

they’ll still win 4iar and, they’ll rebuild on their way to 5iar meanwhile….

we’ll all be on here and, elsewhere with the scatter-guns chasing our tails! IMO!

Talk is cheap, actions are more profitable and, the only action that can turn ‘OUR CLUB’ around is…

to have an, exorcism at hierarchy level, 40k/50k maybe more…EMPTY seats is what will restructure…

‘OUR CLUB’ and give us a chance to build the club back to what it should be! IMO!

    The alternative….more tumbleweed years….

I am afraid that the ethos that you allude to in your post was lost a long time ago and probably won’t return in my time on this earth

Unfortunately in these modern times looking back is not a trait that is encouraged

We are lectured day in and day out that we have to look to the future and that future is that Celtiic Football club will be run as a business and the success of that business will be dictated by results

BBC forecasting yet more rain in the west for tomorrow and Thursday. Anybody any idea why we get so much??

    …………………

its caused by warm wet air from the Gulf Stream heading east. When it hits land – and especially mountains – the moisture falls as rain. So we get higher than average rainfall

More or less the team I would pick but I assumed Commons is not available. From there in the basis that Ki, Kayal, Hooper and Stokes should be dropped then the only option I could come up with was Cha.

On a separate issue their are calls for us to remain behind the team. The manager needs to know this. His public utterances will be repeated to continue driving a wedge in the squad and he really should know better.

That investment means greater chance of success

    re The RTC blog

One of the very funny revelations in teh Comments section was that the RTC blogger wrote to Graham Duffy, The US based fantasist who tried to buy Rangers, using his own RTC e-mail address. Mr. Duffy wrote back, providing him with lots of details of his bid, seemingly under the impression that he was corresponding with the RST (Rangers Supporters Trust). This story does give us some good comedy at a difficult time.

Good morning fellow Celts from grey North Hampshire

Battered Bunnet -The post from Brogan, Rogan et al, was the best article I have read on the subject. Stonking indeed.

Someone was talking about the moaners at CP and the impact it has on others…not least, the team.

Hope you will all excuse my wee opportunity for some name dropping here…

There I was standing in the directors’ box at CP c1994. Fergus McCann and I, with two others surveying the scene. Before us the cold steel framework and concrete blocks of the emerging central section of what is now the North stand. The structure was rising high into the East End sky and an amazing sight…the height of the top section from the old stand was breathtaking. I remember wondering if the stadium was actually being built for 100,000 rather than 60,000. We stood there a long time that summer day watching the cranes lift the slabs into position as an army of workers in different coloured hats beavered away at their tasks.

The old stadium had been levelled…the jungle was gone…the Celtic and Rangers Ends were flattened and being used to store the huge trucks, portakabins and all the equipment needed on a huge construction site….it was reassuring to see that the turf had been laid. In the middle of all the hustle and bustle of this giant meccano kit, it was a comfort to see the green of the Celtic pitch. Fenced-off and being watered from an underground? sprinkler system. I was delighted that the playing area looked at least as big as before and relieved that whoever was running the show had ensured we would still have the vast area of grass needed for our new heroes to work their special kind of magic. Someone remarked that they were glad we would not be restricting the flanks a la Graeme Souness and Walter across the city…we three laughed and Fergus with a slightly mischievous smile shuffled slightly as we all looked at him for his reaction. He seemed pleased with progress.

As we stood there we wondered aloud how the new stadium would become a citadel, a place where visitors would be overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of the place, the noise and the passion. We stood a long time imagining that, I closed my eyes and could see the place jammed full…the strains of Celtic, Celtic, Celtic…crescendo rising to fever pitch

then brought back to reality …with the words I only remembered recently: “yes a citadel when it’s full and we are winning, what will it be like if it’s one-quarter full and we are not winning?” beware the ‘double-edged’ sword!

Almost 20 years ago I could imagine a Celtic Park with 15,000 people in there, because I had seen that a few times… and it was not a happy place to be.

What I could not have foreseen was the sound of a Celtic support booing and hissing Celtic players during the game.

We need to sort that out pronto

You and I seem to disagree with each other quite often buddy. (which is no bad thing, leads to healthy debate) But somewhere along the line, someone has convinced you the only 2 options are –

sit tight and ride through the storm. Forget about expenditure in the meantime and just make sure Celtic FC survives.

spend money and Celtic are ruined.

That kind of siege mentality is also evident in your beliefs others advocating a more attacking line up are on a kamikaze mission and we must defend first, second and third.

This is probably why you and I differ in our opinions so much.

I am more of a ‘He who Dares’ type.

You see that Partizan scenario – I would take that every day of the week ahead of the 0-2 result against a medicore Atletico Madrid team (where we remained defensive and kept things tight).

I would rather go down a hero and just lose with zero.

I also dont believe we should just be happy with our lot because the survival of Celtic is the most important thing.

The survival of Celtic shouldnt even enter into your head.

There is absolutely no question Celtics survival would every become under threat unless we sanctioned an expenditure somewhere in the region of £40m – and even then im not sure it would because our assets would still vastly outweigh our debt..

No one on here is advocating anything like that however.

Factor this into your thinking – there has never been an easier time for Celtic to dominate Scottish Football in our entire history. Our rivals have been asset stripping eveything they can off the pitch and ON it.

Yet we are staring into a 4 in a row for the huns.

It is precisely that cautious and siege mentality which has got us where we are today.

With regards to continuing to play defensively away from home in Europe – we have tried that in the last 24 odd away games of the infamous 32. Its time for us to do what other teams happen to do – ATTACK.

Lets get back on the front foot – lets go back to being brave, to being bold without worrying about the potential downfalls.

  26. bournesouprecipe – You’d think they could be a bit more imaginative.

It’s always something like “Coisty”, “Naisy”, or “Ugly”.

I know it’s cold on the left hand of the Bell Curve, but still.

I have some suggestions for them:

    McGregor = Ned Casanova

    Naismith = Krazy Eyed Killie

    Weir = Hunthusela

    Kirk Broadfoot = Doctor Robotnik

Nikica Jelavić = Hire Purchase Final Demand

Good Morning to the Celtic Family from a sunny Central Scotland. Why do some on the blogg think Commons is not available for Thursday night he is not banned is fit and available if chosen however, the best he can hope for is a place on the bench/ I am afraid we have to accept he is not flavour of the month with Lennie ( do you remember Juarez and what happened to him ).I think Lennie has to learn to keep his own council and not bad mouth his players in public that kind of talk only splits the dressing room. Thursday night for me is a chance to get the team back on the rails go out and beat Rennes and keep our Europa cup dreams alive for a little longer and use the confidence from a win to beat Motherwell on Sunday. At the moment I am in attendance at most games out of sheer habit and nothing else and I will more than likely continue to renew my season ticket faithfully every year

However I do not enjoy my football anymore and the certain feelings that you felt for the club but found hard to put into words have also evaporated

However the most alarming and scary thing is that if Celtic Football club in it present form and disguise were to go out of business or up roots and go elsewhere I probably wouldn’t miss them

I remember a time in the not too distant past when at 2 o’clock on a saturday a certain public house I frequented was full to bursting until 5 past 2 when everybody left to head over to Celtic Park

Now the same pub is still full to bursting at 3 o’clock with good Celtic men even although there is a game at Celtic Park
