Failure elsewhere cannot disguise abject Celtic challenge

1009

As the darkest clouds descend over Ibrox with news that medals in their trophy room have been poinded by sheriff officers, sentiment in our half of the city is no brighter.  Celtic’s best chance to win the league this season lies not in outpointing everyone else, or seeing their principle rivals lose 10 points, it is in the complete obliteration of Rangers, allowing us to take our chances with Motherwell, who can open up a six point gap between second and third against Celtic on Sunday.

Whatever the following weeks bring for Rangers, if Celtic winning the league is a consequence, we cannot allow the title to disguise the abject failure to be competitive so far this season.

I’ll give you my take on Lenny…it is changing by the Day..

The fact that it is now a topic of debate is probably indicative that his time is starting to run down quickly. He needs to produce probably 4 good wins on the trot to reverse this.

Every game now seems likely to reduce Lenny’s grasp.

All Celtic fans are willing him on in our hearts but i suspect our heads are telling a different stories. Some on CQN are letting their hearts speak, while others let their heads do the talking – but fundamentally we are all sharing increasing reservations. Results are forcing us to listen to our heads more than our hearts.

All us also know that he is a strong character who is capable of pulling off something that will make posters like myself eat humble pie. However week on week we are not seeing any kind of sustained improvement – if anything we are seeing our team get worse.

Love Lenny but Love Celtic more.

Whatever, I now believe we are as well sticking with Lenny for the remainder of the season – or until we have an outstanding replacement. I would not be in favour of buying in January – and I am hoping for a serious clear out. Come the summer if we have reversed current form and won the league, Lenny gets a war chest. If not the new Manager does.

You seem confident that the Swiss Court decisions will undermine UEFA again. I have not seen the detailed judgement of the local Swiss Courts but it is not yet a fatal blow to UEFA.

The little I have read of the judgement is that Sion appealed on grounds that Uefa’s Court for Arbitration in Sport was not a neutral judge but UEFA’s poodle and that their free trade was being restricted. However, there surely need to be registration rules in sport otherwise any club can say that they can sign anyone at any time because their trade is being unfairly restricted.

Then we can have bankrupt clubs buying players they cannot afford to win sporting success.

We can have relegation threatened teams hiring Messi for a few games to get out of trouble.

Sport needs rules and governing bodies. Even a libertarian like philvis would not accept this kind of “free for all”. Sion broke rules. The Swiss courts do not seem to have even addressed these points; they merely gave them leave for further challenge. I do not believe UEFA’s decision against Sion is groundless. I think it is eminently sensible to ban debtor clubs from cheating others.

Is there anything you have read about Sion that leads you to believe they have either right or legal opinion on their side?

  3. I think Lenny has crossed a red line with his public criticism of all the players via the media.

It´s his job to motivate them.

In the face of the abuse Neil has had to suffer he may have lost the plot.

Desmond Dermot or is it Dermot Desmond?….Move it on over!!!!!

Depth of feeling and strength of relationship with the fans, in my opinion, should not be the most important factor in how a managers performance is judged.

Results and peformances are what counts (again only my opinion)

I think I understand pretty well that depth of feeling, I know how Lenny is loved by the fans and this is a fantastic thing to have and is also well deserved given his service as a player and loyalty as a manager.

But it must be accompanied by results and performances.

What I am suggesting is that this strong relationship is distorting some fans overall view of our situation.

I did not mean to offend anyones, I am trying to cut through the emotion and get to the facts and have a reasoanble discussion based on those.

  5. The Exiled Tim

    Hope all is well.

I assume you mean a two-tier SPL, amigo, but a two-team SPL could be interesting too. Obviously they couldn’t just play each other at football every week, but it might work if it became a bit like it’s a knock-out and we had to see who between, say, Beram Kayal and Papacy could deposit more green or blue water in a big cylinder using only a sponge, taking the water from a big tub located 50 metres away, but with people dressed as dragons trying to make them spill all their water on the way back.

My cave, if I had one, would be on the wee Arab Israeli. Every time.

  6. The honest mistake @ 23:19

How many brownie points for that response

The unfortunate thing for you and your ilk is that in the modern football world nothing can go on forever and the old sentimentalities do not win leagues anymore

Its a cracker and bringing out the switch from EBTs to debt at a time they must have known the EBTs were dodgy – otherwise why switch?- is the killer.

Whilst the instruments for how they sought advantage matter it is the underlying attitude that enabled the choices to be made is what has created what verges on football crime.

Total recklessness from 2007 for what? Tainted titles from 2000 and a game that looks and may well be corrupt to avoid a fate that might have been a lot less damaging had they decided to play the game.

  8. something worth remembering when discussing Strachan

when he joined the mythical illusion of the 10 year waiting list for a season book was at its height – by the time he left that had been blown wide open and 15-20, 000 people had decided to stop going to watch Celtic at Celtic Park.

Not exactly figures to be taken lightly.

There was a reason for that.

Sometimes time makes the memory forget some things and remember other things differently.

It was the most boring football I have ever watched. I completely accept he brought great success but he did it boring the absolute pants off most of us. Football is an entertainment – lets not allow the businessmen who insist on running the club as if it were an ordinary business let us forget that.

I want to be entertained – sue me.

  9. I see the accusation is being left dangling that those of us willing to see Lenny persevere are placing our love of Lenny above our love of the club and of acting with heart and not head.

I repeat my closing challenge from my post at 23.13

“Why do those who want Lenny to go have such blind faith that those 12 games (this season’s SPL fixtures) define his managerial strengths more than the previous 47 do? “

  10. The Honest Mistake (Sickened)

    I understand.

True story. I got first great job about sixteen years ago. The man who invited me for the interview was at my age. I learned later that he was born in Romania, stayed (escaped) to Germany when he was 16 years old, then moved to London as very succesfull man and then he was sent to Poland. ItWe spent only five minutes on conversation and later he told me that he took me but I was not the best candidate. I will remember that interview due to one question that he made. His last question was: when you see the face of the man, can you recogise if he is the Jew or not?

I said , what? Can you repeat, please?

He asked that question once again and after few seconds of embarassing I said: how can anybody recoginse the other man on his face if he was a Jew or not?

Stipid question but it probably came from his experiences. He was a Jew. We never talked about Jews, Catholics and all those differences.

Lucian teached me one important thing – whatever happens, don’t think how bad are things. Always and only think how solve the problem, becouse only that matters.

I said that becouse don’t think that all is bright at Celtic and think what would solve the problem? Find new manager, keep Lennon and give him mentor?

Maybe find Sport Director who will be responsible for finding new players and would be ready to give his head for success or failure? Maybe show doors to all Celtic scouts who brought all tose Gadget players to the club? I don’t know what is the best solution.

  11. Henriks Tongue @ 23:38

Fair enough. In my opinion it’s far too early to be attacking his managerial abilities. In terms of results and performances, his overall record is actually good despite the recent dip in form. Which is what we are looking at, a dip in form. The huns are very scared of him, which is why they do their best to undermine him at every opportunity in every form of media.

    rimtimtim @ 23:35

“I think Lenny has crossed a red line with his public criticism of all the players via the media.”

What did he actually say about each player?? Some direct quotes would be good..or did you read it somewhere?

Only had a bottle earlier, so no too much, it’s all relative mi amigo, imagine you are a squilloinair, imagine if you could spend a couple of mil and not even give it the time of day, a wee bit like DD is doing presently, and then imagine if after biding your time your wait comes to fruition and your few mill investment turns into mega mils, and could even be bills or squills, now isn’t that worth waiting for ?

Times are a changin mi amigo, my mate e-mailed me the other day re the hun, he would be the one who has invested his weans and grandweans inheritance on this, all it said was…Woolies and Lehmans….it’s happening as we speak.

I have read more or less the same as you.

I am basing my opinion on UEFA’S response to Sion.

They have had a meeting to try and placate them.

They have discussed reintroduction to the EL.

They want to avoid another Bosman ruling, rocking their authority.

I have interpreted their actions,as being those of a body who are aware that they might be on a sticky wicket.

I could have it wrong.I just smell fear.

That previous 47 included losing the league by our own capitulation, getting totally spanked in europe (twice) and losing/drawing nearly every major game we played in league and cup.

I wonder if you saw a question I posed yesterday morning about how the view the SFA takes of this whole mess might be affected by the fact that the new president of the SFA was a director at the Brox until 2005.

You did mention conflicts of interest …

I admit I did see some promise last season despite the poor results but that potential promise has not materialised and doesn’t look like doing so. ”

That previous 47 did not include all of that actually. I was concentrating on the league, as that was our desired target (much more so than Europe or the Cups).

Neil won 8 SPL fixtures in his caretaker period and lost one SC tie. In the following season he won 29 and drew 5 of the 38 SPL games played. That’s a hell of a good record over those 47 or 46 games (if we restrict to league).

The current 12 SPL performances have been very poor but, I ask you if you were looking coldly at the record of played 58 ( those 46 plus current 12) and looking at Won 44 Drawn 7 Lost 7, are you really looking at a bad managerial record or a troubled blip?

I think it is the heart factors not the head ones that are strongest in those wanting Lenny to go. They are basing it on the hurt felt by the prospect of another league loss to a team with a freakish run of form (this so-called worst Rangers ever are on the verge of breaking an away wins record that has stood since pre WW2 times) than it is on Lenny’s overall record.

Why is there such blind faith in Lenny’s eventual defeat?
