Failure elsewhere cannot disguise abject Celtic challenge

1009

As the darkest clouds descend over Ibrox with news that medals in their trophy room have been poinded by sheriff officers, sentiment in our half of the city is no brighter.  Celtic’s best chance to win the league this season lies not in outpointing everyone else, or seeing their principle rivals lose 10 points, it is in the complete obliteration of Rangers, allowing us to take our chances with Motherwell, who can open up a six point gap between second and third against Celtic on Sunday.

Whatever the following weeks bring for Rangers, if Celtic winning the league is a consequence, we cannot allow the title to disguise the abject failure to be competitive so far this season.

Lads this is a bit long winded but worth a read.

The Problems Facing the SFA If Rangers Fall Into Insolvency – A Guest Post by Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan

” Instead, following upon the defeat by Kaunas they went on an unprecedented spending spree to ensure success– all at the cost of paying HMRC and at the cost of complying with the intention of the fair play financial legislation.

Money that could have been used for debt repayment was spent on Mendes, Davis, Lafferty, Whittaker, Naismith ans so on– eventually that extended to the signings of Miller, Jelavic and everyone who followed. Absolutely no attempt at repayment of revenue debt, or the setting aside of money to meet revenue debt, was made.

So this is not accidental insolvency as a result of poor trading– it is a direct result of financial irregularity and it should not be allowed to result in a benefit to the perpetrators of that financial irregularity. Does that argument sound familiar? Yes I thought it would– it is taken from the formal legal pleadings of Rangers PLC lodged in the Court of Session in answer to the claim lodged by one of the architects of this misfortune– namely Martin Bain Esq!”

    ============================

This is backed by a look at the debt Rangers incurred from 2007 and the debt Celtic refused to match, the refusal that has placed many good Tims, rightly despondent at how far we have fallen in both relative terms and football standards, at each others throats.

Imagine a Rangers without McGregor, Whittaker, Davis, Naismith, Lafferty and Jelavic. Would they be any better than a Celtic without Brown, Izzy, Commons plus one of any other first team regulars? We are having a bad spell no doubt, but how much of our anger/depression is exacerbated by the fact that a wide point gap exists as at some of the performances.

Not all performances have been bad. V Hibs midweek, Rennes, Udinese, Motherwell, Dundee Utd were good but how much is our inconsistency v Rangers consistency affecting our mood and how much of Rangers consistency is down to the financial recklessness BRTH describes so well and the table below supports by showing quite clearly where the dependence on using other people’s money switched from EBTs to debt that has not been cleared.

This is a shower of cheating and coniving barstewards we are up against and the sooner they are made to pay for crimes against Scottish football in general and Celtic in particular the better.

10, points, 25 points, 75 point my backside – they are beyond redemption and a hingings too good for them.

This is a two sided coin we are dealing with and focussing on the heads or the tails does not make anyone a header or tailer. The total coin has to be seen and weighed to assess its true value.

On the fitbaw side, Do what we did last time we were up against it. Play Sammy up front and flood midfield.

Mark Wilson’s contract has a 1 year option extension attached to it next summer

I would imagine PL will activate this if any interest is shown in him

Then again, if he requires another knee operation sooner rather than later, he will probably be let go due to his injury record

I’m sorry Mark Wilson has been injury prone – I like him when he’s on form – an honest Celtic journeyman..

Apparently Mark Wilson can be depended upon to drive himself anywhere to attend supporters functions with many a late night drive back in the wee hours.

When we are looking for that kind of committment to the support from players then now is not the time to lose him.

  8. So if you no longer want Neil Lennon as boss your a hun?

I posted last night that we could only afford to drop another 11 points this season. There is no chance that Neil Lennon can achieve this.

What do posters on here wish to achieve by keeping Neil Lennon in a job that he is not capable of doing? Show me evidence that he is capable?

Are those supporting Neil Lennon, just that? Neil Lennon supporters? Or are they Celtic supporters? This is similar to the MON years when we had folk fawning over him, forgetting about black Sunday and reinventing stats that shot down Gordon Strachan. I was no fan of Gordon Strachans brand of football… but football is about results. If Gordon Strachan was delivering the results that Neil Lennon now is what would be the result?

Compare this start to the season with other managers – Mowbray, Barnes, Macari, Brady. I think Neil is up there with the worst of them. When will we wake up? In my opinion we are in a vicious circle of sympathy and revelling in the disgusting treatment dished out to Neil last season. We need to get over it and start again, otherwise its 5 in a row, 20k at home games, Rangers back where they were and we will be looking forlornly into the distance trying to wipe the embarrassment from our faces.

Thats what our situation is, an embarassment. Total mortification and we are all responsible.

Meant to say also that I’d respect the right of any Celtic minded poster who raises legitimate concerns (on CQN) of the way our club has failed both on and off the park in recent years, its not good enough but personally I’m hoping for improved performances, new players required, hungry players who want to play for the jersey, a couple of under 19’s and two decent signings in Jan. along with injured players returning will do it IMO.

We’re being cheated by a board who are working to a failed strategy, I wish there were someone in the wings who could purchase enough shares to ensure DD isn’t running the club down via PL…… maybe it’ll take 20k crowds to oust the downsizers.

You giving away money for petrol, did you win the lotto?

  12. Is it possible to not rate the manager Neil and worry for the direction he is taking the team in, that the job may be too big for him, that it may come to a parting of the ways that you want to be amicable, but separate all of that, all of it, from supporting the man, the character, the legend ex-player, the hero for everything he stands up for?

When he is MATCH fit, which takes him a few games, he is worth his first team place. The cross that hits the first defender clears them, the forward run takes him clear and he gets back quicker.

    You are clutching at straws.

We lost last season because of the 3 home draws and the ICT debacle.

We are in trouble this season because we imploded against SJ and the Hibees at home and got done over by Killie and Hertz away.

    Nothing more.

We are terrible at the moments with the odd glimpse of talent on show.

Damn right. For those who blame Lennoxtown, artificial pitches, the coaches, the training methods, try paying close attention to an actual flamin game. The waves of play-on when we have a man down (seriously, we’re the only team this happens to), the late, persistent unpunished fouling. the middle-third fouls which break up the play. We’re deluded if we don’t think all of that plays a decisive factor in players’ injuries.

I agree that sentiment should not stand in the way of discarding proven failure. However the failure, in my opinion, has not been proven yet.

Yes we have had a run of bad results but we are barely a third of the way through the season. If come March/April we are not competing for top spot then that is the time to tell the manager “We have a shortlist of candidates for your job. Win the League or we will regretfully have to replace you.”

October is not the time to be undermining the manager, again in my opinion of course.

I hope that Stewart regan and Neil Doncaster had a chance to read brth’s piece.

I hope they know they are under increasing scrutiny.

  24. I can’t believe people on here are still talking about wanting Neil out get a grip.

Neil could’ve walked last year after the death threats and left us in the lurch but he didnt because faithful through and through neil knows the meaning of it but some of you lot don’t. Plz get a grip because you lot are getting more like them scumbags by the day.

I was listening to Clyde and that rat dalziel still saying it’s a results driven business, they want Neil out why I ask yous I think we no the reason why and it is nothing to do with results.

I’ll put it this way they were knocked out of 3 cups in 8 weeks and not 1 mention of MCcoist going I wonder why.

  25. jude2005 is Neil Lennon \o/ on

See if thems get demoted 2 leagues they will play the wee Rovers at Cliftonhill. Interesting!!

  26. In the previous years I read almost every comment on this blog and remeber that I was surprised that so many did not like Gordon Strachan. No matter what were results, I sometimes was wondering why he got so many criticism on his back?

Now I wonder how this blog would look like if it was Gordon Strachan with these results, not Neil Lennon?

  27. For many a month I have spent many hours reading various comments on our beloved Celtic on this site without ever making any contribution so this is my first. I will begin by saying hello to everyone and thanking them for getting me through last season in which I thought I had gone through every emotion possible. Reading and knowing others were feeling my pain helped so again thanks. Some of the events on and off the field last year is stuff that you will tell the grandchildren. This season although I just feel numb. Where things are going wrong and how to rectify them is a debate that will continue amongst us. For me I believe that the team are going into games with no preparation it’s just simply turn up and lets see what happens. This is not a go at Neil Lennon. I for one have no love for the Lennoxtown training complex. The players this week will train indoors to prevent them from getting cold on a 3/4 size plastic then and then we expect them to get stuck in at a wind swept mud bath on Sunday. I know there is many factors why we aren’t performing but it’s just a thought. Hopefully things will improve and Celtic will once again have a team on the park to equal the faithful and trusting support it has behind them. Hail hail
