Failure elsewhere cannot disguise abject Celtic challenge

1009

As the darkest clouds descend over Ibrox with news that medals in their trophy room have been poinded by sheriff officers, sentiment in our half of the city is no brighter.  Celtic’s best chance to win the league this season lies not in outpointing everyone else, or seeing their principle rivals lose 10 points, it is in the complete obliteration of Rangers, allowing us to take our chances with Motherwell, who can open up a six point gap between second and third against Celtic on Sunday.

Whatever the following weeks bring for Rangers, if Celtic winning the league is a consequence, we cannot allow the title to disguise the abject failure to be competitive so far this season.

Fair enough. Don’t agree though, imo it’s up to him how he deals with things. Every manager’s got his own pyschological approach, so i wouldn’t be telling any one how to do his job. He can be judged further down the line for it. I do think we’re over analysing everything he says and does as well. To me, the problem he has is a very simple one, but also very difficult to resolve – putting confidence back into the players in his team.

It the least we can do for Neil after what he’s been thru in our Bonnie Scotland. He must feel very lonely just now.

I loved Neil Lennon as the player and figure at Celtic. When he was appointed I said that Celtic job was to find him smaller club before and I said that possible failure was big damage to Neil’s career.

Your definition is correct, but falls apart with regard to Neil. Almost every single poster (if not all) on here has admitted, to varying degrees, that Lenny has contributed to our current poor form. That cannot be described as blind.

There is no doubt that Gordon Strachan was an excellent manager AT TIMES for Celtic. He won 3 leagues, 2 league cups and a Scottish cup and gave us 2 great last 16’s and the greatest comeback in our history to win a championship.

But please remember he was not flawless by any stretch of the imagination.

Artmedia, Clyde, St Mirren in the cup, spending an entire half season blowing match after match and winning 22 points post Christmas 09 and of course the way they blew those last 2 matches with everything in our own hands. There was a great deal of cheating from referees towards the end of that season but when you need strength, he failed.

    His comments

The woman/childbirth thing was cringeworthy as was the kestrel/Devil dugs thing. He did make some great comments and treated the media with the contempt they deserved but I remember a number of posters on here banging on and on about:

    1. Good team mates

    2. The constant we were brilliant todays when we played total gash

    3. The Gary Pendry clipboard moans

How quick people forget when the bad times hit.

    Players

Gordon Strachan signed more players than Martin ONeill and got less out of big buys than ONeill did. He also signed a plethora of garbage which was supplemented by the genuine ability that was there to carry them. Arguably it is the other way around now – too many non events mixed with a few who can do the job.

Overall he was a very successful manager and I thank him for what he did and salute him for the emotion and love he showed for Tommy Burns when he passed away but Gordon Strachan was not without his faults (no man is). I don’t like the revisionism because we are having a bad time of it and make no mistake, the wee man was let down in the same way that Mowbray was by the board and as Lenny has been also.

I don’t want to rake through everything but until we get it together, we will be having similar feelings.

    Just keep your perspective.

Our only hope to slavage something from this season is a complete reversal of plc policy in regard to signing players come the January transfer window if even only to make us, in Pauls words, competative in the second half of the season.

We need at least four proven quality players through the spine of the team who have already proved themselves in a decent standard of league. Goalkeeper, centre half, centre mid and striker

This will be expensive but we have no choice other than continue our slide into mediocrity. OUr failed transfer policies of the past few years are the reason we are in this position in the first place

If we are told that we cannot afford to do this then we must head to the Car Park and demand change at the top.

As the huns stare over the precipice we have reached our own tipping point after years of neglect.

It cannot be allowed to continue.

Agree with a lot you say but strachan might have had less protection when he was criticized by Celtic fans but a lot of that was due to his smarty pants personality. Lenny on the other hand has put his life on the line for Celtic and will get protection from Celtic fans for that reason. Overall Lenny has suffered a lot more abuse for Celtic.

The Hun thing might be hard for you to understand but a similar situation could be if you as a pole grew up in certain parts of Germany and were made to feel like a second class citizen. It’s difficult to describe to an outsider but if you spent 10 years in Scotland I’m sure you’d understand.

Faith and facts operate in separate spheres.

If I have faith I do not look for evidence. If I seek proof, I look for evidence. It is the difference between the scientist and the religious adherent.

I can have faith in Lenny from the way he has spoken the truth to fans throughout his term in charge of the club. His presentation as an honest, sincere and strong man, who has suffered for his beliefs, gives me faith in his strength.

If I look for evidence, I look at my team’s performance, post-Tony Mowbray, in the 9 game run-in. I look at the stingy defence he built through last season when we gained a very high points total. I can then contrast the performance in those 47 games with the very weak performance in the past 12 (this season) and then I ask:-

Why do those who want Lenny to go have such blind faith that those 12 games define his managerial strengths more than the previous 47 do?

I accept his form is not good but I watched him the season before last as he tried to make a comeback. I could see how his fitness was not what it could be. I was pleased when the mtach fitness returned last season when he had a good one and since he aint going anywhere AND as he has the attitude we complain is lacking I reckon he is worth persevering with to see if a few more games improve his performance. Are the alternatives so much better?

I think that owen is right when says that you should support every Celtic manager until the end but don’t think that those who say that want new manager are Huns, like many here call them posters.

I don’t agree that Strachan was treated better than Neil Lennon. I remember how some posters were calling Strachan after bad results or good results but bad play.

I know about Celtic what I learned from here.

I’m just wondering how the blog would look like if it was Gordon Strachan today?

I don’t carry that luggage with what is between Rangers and Celtic and vice versa. These discussions about poppies, songs, referees and media I still find strange. I watch 50 percent of Celtic games and don’t see progress, don’t see signs of good play.

I try to find reasons why some call Huns those who see the need of change? Whatever happens, whatever results Neil Lennon must stay. Just curious.

WGS won three in a row and got us to the champions league last 16 twice. i would have him back in a heart beat.

  20. CultsBhoy hates being 2nd on

WGS in his last season was the beginning of our ongoing demise…

WGS was not for me…the reason he didn’t get cut any slack in the way Lenny has is that he had total disconnect with the fans – worse he treated fans (“joiners, plumbers etc – what do they know”) with derision.

No questioning his record – but he did the simpler thing IMO – he beat a poor Hun team, subsequently we have capitulated, which given their teams (40 yr old defenders, etc) is harder in my view. We should be looking at 8 IAR this season.

We need to stop letting the huns condition dictate our transfer policy.

We need to set our own agenda.

I dont think we will however and I suspect in January more sticking plasters will be administered to cover open wounds.

We need change at the top of the club and we need it now.

Worryingly the huns slide (further) into their own filth will disguise the failings of those tasked with running our club who have failed in every possible way.

It’s one thing offering some constructive criticism of Lenny if you think it’s deserved, but your posts tonight seem to be more determined to undermine the Celtic Manager. “A decreasing minority”??? Based on what, other than your own assumption?

  27. WGS might have beat a poor huns team but when he come to the club he had to rebuild a team, the huns were clear favorite in his first season but we won by miles. not as easy to do as we might have thought. the start of our down fall was bining him. mangament is results based, especialy at our club, if you play good football and lose your out.. he done what he had to do to keep his job and that was winning at any cost and he done that..
