Familiar failings

232

There was eniugh evidence on show last night to confirm Celtic’s Pot 2 opponent was on the softer side.  Despite this, our failure away from home in the Champions League continues.

Without Cameron Carter-Vickers we were always going to need everything to go our way.  After two successive VAR verdicts denied Leipzig a goal, you would be forgiven for thinking this was the case.  A familiar offering of a cheap goal put paid to that.

Disappointing though the result was, qualification for the knockout stages remains in Celtic hands.  Home wins in the next two games against Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk should be enough.

We should ask no less from Ange and the players.  Both opponents are vulnerable and miles off their best.

  1. 79caps and others mentioned Bruges,

Some brutal results and poor performances from them in the CL in very recent years – almost as if they needed to gain experience to start getting good results, which they certainly are. Maybe it’s similar for us.

Good afternoon all from the International Bar. Pouring down outside, I’m trapped in here.

  3. Seem to be the only one,but I thought when we scored,we would at least get a draw.First half we had more attempts than them.Kyoto very unlucky twice.Header, then hitting his shot perfectly on target, until it luckily struck a Leipzig heel.We will always look a bit inferior, but the stats don’t back this up.

When we scored we had been the better team since restart. We were weathering their pressure as is normal, for most teams away.Forget their off side goals, they were.

IGame changed with Harts howler.Gave them the leg up,hence 3rd goal.

With CCV,Starfelt I think we get at least a draw.,

Minus points.Maeda.Just what does he do?.Never seen him use his supposed blistering pace. For his input overall, waste of a jersey.

Hart will continue his reckless mistakes.

We can win both home games.Europa will do.

  4. The result was probably what the bookies would have predicted.

Simply, RBL have a higher calibre player and squad. They can afford it. Werner 60 caps for Germany, Nkunku hot property at 80m. Even their bench had 70 cap Swede Forssberg and the very experienced Dane Poulsen. They hone their tactics against Bayern and Dortmund in front of 75k. We go to AstroTurf and parked buses at Kilmarnock etc.

Having said all that, I’ll contradict myself somewhat by saying because of our name, reputation and support, it would not be classed as a CL upset if we reverse that score next week.

  5. It’s a beautiful game but it’s also a dog fight, big Joe should be clearing those balls to the half way line. That is THE ball to play in that situation.

  6. Dexter P. Bampot on

Hatate is a waste defensively. Too lightweight and error prone under pressure. He is a luxury player who, when on form going forward, can provide us with creativity and goals. However when he is off form or the opposition prevent him getting the ball, he is AWOL. With Reo it’s either a 9/10 or a 2/10.

  7. Just watched extended highlights ( I know) and wondered what all the criticism is about.

We DID play Angeball,we DID make mistakes,we DID create chances and we DID lose to a very good side.

Of course I would rather we had won but, overall, that was no calamity ( apart from Big Joe`s mistake).

Well, at least I agree with the first part of your assessment :-))

  9. Goodwin gets an 8 game ban ,for calling out cheating ,absolutely ridiculous, and he obviously never backed down at the hearing.

  11. Good afternoon.

Just a wee reminder that the men of the match poll for last night’s game remains open overnight for this one game only! Going to see the one and only Gilbert O’Sullivan at The Pavilion tonight and utilising my recently acquired free bus pass so it’ll be bedtime when I get back home! I’ll close the vote tomorrow morning at 8am and have the results out around 9am. But if you haven’t voted yet, don’t delay, please email me now with your 3 names – SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM . Never too late to join in and spread the word to family and friends! No sign up required, just your email after all or any game. HH

I agree, I sent the following short message to my mates after the second goal was lost: “bigger, stronger, faster”

  13. Bada

Was it for this, JG was given the Ban : ” Porteous has won penalties like that in the past. People will say he’s good at it and he’s clever. But it’s blatant cheating as far as I’m concerned and it’s cost my team points.” Jim Goodwin.

I would hope our Away support at Perth show signs of solidarity with Jim Goodwin.

    Have doubles and cans.

  16. Good on Jim Goodwin not changing his version on the cheating ,If I was Jim what is the difference between me and Sevco who blatantly say in public about referees being bias to me that is more or less saying the ref cheated ,Jim tell the SFA to F. K O

  17. bigrailroadblues on

Jim Goodwin and Darren O’Dea are two young fellas that the huns are terrified of. Allegedly.

  18. After 3 games , 2 points was probably the lowest target before a ball was kicked. We can consider ourselves unfortunate not to be on 3 and a little bit sorry for ourselves we are on 1 .

Six points from the 3 remaining games is the next target

    The hard work starts now

  19. Bada

Appaently a six game ban ( with two others suspended).

The fifth game is against Sevco so obviously a more reasonable two game ban would have been of no use !

  20. Sevco get an extra day`s recovery/preparation time over us for this weekend`s games so who gets the earlier KO for the first time this season?

    Cheerio for now

” both opponents are vulnerable and miles off their best”

Unfortunately we have been too , in our last few games . A vulnerable and miles off theit best RBL could have dished out one of these horrible Euro-away drubbings instead of just a comfortable win .

We need to find form and fitness and have only one week to do it , but it’s not impossible . With CCV and (hopefully) Calmac back , and a return to something like form for Kyogo , Maeda , Hatate and O’Riley you never know .

I asked you who the poster(s) was/were whom you were aiming at as being “in the clique” and having failed to honour the memory of Neustadt Braw, to your standards and timing.

You failed to be “abundantly clear” about that in your first post and you have failed to clarify that issue in your response.

Do you intend to slur some people generally but be too cowardly to specify who you mean to slur?

  23. Tom McLaughlin on

Goodwin deserved a lengthy ban for what he said about the Hibs player. If he’d said that about a Celtic player we’d be in uproar.

  24. 🗣 “It’s easy to come out here and say we were disappointed but it’s not good enough – we need to show we belong at this level because the club does.”

  25. We use the word ‘unlucky’ more after european games than domestic.

    Maybe it’s not about luck.

    Tom 5.24.

True, but Goodwins allegiance to a certain club and his uppity fenian bassa demeanour have made him a prime target for the sfa etc.

John Hartson’s £70m conclusion after Celtic defeat

    By Dave Flanigan

Former Celtic striker John Hartson was keen to highlight the positives of Celtic’s Champions League campaign despite last night’s 3-1 defeat to RB Leipzig in Germany.

Celtic had chances against the Bundesliga side and eventually equalised – after Christopher Nkunku’s opener – through a slick Jota goal, but succumbed to an Andre Silva double after Joe Hart’s scuffed pass allowed Marco Rose’s team back in front.

Hartson stated that the gulf in individual quality between the sides was the difference on the night, but that Celtic need not be ashamed of their performance.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (from 00:50), he said: “We did ever so well to get back into the game with Jota’s goal, and then ultimately Leipzig just came on strong, I can’t argue with the result, Leipzig were the better team and deserved to win. I’m not arguing with the fact that Celtic lost, on another night they could have maybe got something.

“They have got a player, Nkunku, who has a £90m release clause, that’s a £70m centre forward they have. We are up against a team that have got real, real quality. It’s not to say we haven’t but it’s what we are up against. We are almost punching above our weight and that’s the level we are at.

“We have got to strive and get better at this level, but there is no shame in the performance, I thought it was okay, it wasn’t great. We showed good character to get back in it but then I thought Leipzig were too strong, too tactically aware, they had the lion’s share of the ball, and controlled the middle of the park.”

Even after last night’s result left Ange Postecoglou’s side at the bottom of Group F, Hartson believes that there’s still plenty to look forward to in this campaign with qualification still within Celtic’s reach.

“Again, Leipzig come to Celtic Park next week, we’re still very much in the competition and it’s in our hands,” he said.

“We beat Leipzig and then of course beat Shakhtar, and we know how strong we are at Celtic Park, we win the next two and that takes us through – seven points. So there’s still that positivity, still that opportunity for us to go through in second place.

“There is a possibility with Celtic’s home form, but Celtic would have to play very well to beat a team that have outplayed them for long periods. I am holding on to the fact that we are not dead and buried. If we finish third we stay in Europe and have a playoff to get through to the Europa League, so are we starting to think ‘can we finish third now?’”

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

To those who say we should spend more money etc – name 3 players that you would sign in the next window.

  28. I hate quoting how much our opposition players are valued at.

    No excuses

It also gives credence to every team who we play against domestically
