Familiar failings

232

There was eniugh evidence on show last night to confirm Celtic’s Pot 2 opponent was on the softer side.  Despite this, our failure away from home in the Champions League continues.

Without Cameron Carter-Vickers we were always going to need everything to go our way.  After two successive VAR verdicts denied Leipzig a goal, you would be forgiven for thinking this was the case.  A familiar offering of a cheap goal put paid to that.

Disappointing though the result was, qualification for the knockout stages remains in Celtic hands.  Home wins in the next two games against Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk should be enough.

We should ask no less from Ange and the players.  Both opponents are vulnerable and miles off their best.

Apparently Roberto Rosetti is UEFA’s Head of Referees.

    (No, me neither)

I wonder if he ever feels inclined to text Crawford Allan to ask

“WTF do your guys do on the pitch?

Every time one of your clubs, except Celtic, play in European competition they give away penalties or get a player sent off in every game”

Young host Enda Coll pointed out that TRFC were within a whisker of winning the 2nd top club trophy in the world last year; and without an academy, big money buys or an uniquely flamboyant ‘GioBall’ system.

While I accept the teams they faced were ‘favourable/lucky’ and I sure don’t want us to become them, the point is there is a way to get results in Europe.

As Ernie said, we’re doing it in Scotland nae bother, but Euro currently eludes us.

Also pissed off re Betis as I am going there after Munich and Madrid on the week we play the Spaniards. So was hoping to see 3 games in 3 days. It looks like Betis will be a dead rubber now. Maybe ours will too.

  10. Superbru update

Our Round 9 leaders were :-

    Melvin Udall- 14.5

    Aipple- 13

    The class of 67- 12.5

Melvin’s score equals the weekly best set by Ayrshire Tim in Week 1 and sets the target to be beat in any other week featuring double matches for teams.

Wooden spoon goes to Craig 76 who scored the same 2 points that Belmont Brian collected but, without the wooden implement award.

    Overall, our leaders are:-

    Ayrshire Tim- 60

    Leggy- 53.5

    Tirconnel- 53

Our wooden spoon contenders are Belmont Brian and wee BGFC on 22 but Craig 76 is challenging on 23.5

Remember to have next week’s predictions in for 12.30 on Saturday (6.30 am start for me in the US this week) and there is a game on Tuesday next to be included too, remember

  12. Angeball or not?

I’m in 2 minds (again) after RBL.

I thought Ange’s style of play was vindicated after Real Madrid but on reflection it was only vindicated for 55 minutes or so just as it was against RBL. The problem is it takes a lot out of the players and they have to be substituted and the replacements are nowhere near as good as starters.

I would never suggest parking the bus but we simply leave ourselves open to counter attack again and again. So Angeball is fine if you know how to deal with counterattacks, not Angeball if you don’t know how to deal with counter attacks. Successful Angeball depends on taking scoring opportunities otherwise it appears reckless, especially against better teams than we meet regularly in SPFL. The problem with passing out from the back against RBL was that there was a lack of options due to players not moving into a position to receive the ball leaving passing back to goalie the only option. I thought RBL did the passing out from the back with much greater confidence – oh how we missed CCV and Carl Starfelt.

  13. Feksake !

Hello again all you young rebels

From a rain lashed Victoria state, weird weather here now, suppose

    it’s a climate change thingumyjig 🥺

Well, disappointing result against RBL, not entirely unexpected but

it’s quite obvious to me anyway that unless we have the same quality

of reserve to the likes of our captain Callum, or CCV then results

against the teams with the multi million acquisitions are less likely.

But then we have to ask ourselves how do you keep a player of that

quality happy sitting on the bench biding his time ?

Don’t think our CB’s played badly, in fact I thought young Welsh was

very good, and Jentz was reasonable but guilty of poor transition

passing after winning the ball on a few occasions.

Do I think big Joe should be rested ?

Yes, much as I luv the big guy, we must give Seigrest some game time

anyway, just to sharpen him up, we know there’s mistakes in every

goalie, this from a ghuy who still thinks Ronnie Simpson was the best

Celtic keeper ever, the reason being that Ronnie was a lucky keeper

even when he was well beaten the ball would be kept out of the goal

by a heel, his erse, or batter of his head lol.

Anyhows it’s only my musings after a wee day on the biddy, and just

think bhoys and ghirls, it’s all part of the experience and emotion of

    supporting the Celtic, the Bhoys.

OMG imagine being a hun, now there’s a reason to be despondent 😡

  17. Good Morning Celts – Another Grand Day To Be A Tim…

    QUADROPHENIAN @ 12:27 PM,

… soon as you mentioned NL term 1, I guessed the soaraway musta been referencing Neil’s term 2 (which makes for bloody impressive reading with hindsight – esp given the Lazio efforts.)

Good luck to Lenny against Ten Haag’s team!

Indeed; facts are stubborn, statistics pliable ;)

Yes, it we ended up top of our Europa league, the game away to Lazio was immense, it shows what that team was capable off… hope Celtic have learned you can’t have too many mercenaries in the team.

Only saw the highlighs but Lenny’s Omonia gave Man Utd a game, although Man U dominated, Omonia looked to be in it with a punchers chance until the last ten minutes.

Great atmosphere and the Stadium and team regaled in green and white, shamrocks and the sripes.

There’s worse places to be coaching… well done Lenny

    Hail Hail

Had a wee look back on CTV, catch up on all the reserve and

ghirls games scores etc, seen young Jacinta had 3 goals nominated

for goal of the month, WOW !

Chest puffed out now, I coached that ghirl from a very young age

giving her the Celtic history at every training session.

    I’m so pwoud 🥰

Well done Mick, you have every right to be proud, the Aussie connection just gets better.

Are you sending a team to Queensland?

What have you made of Ange’s demeanour after recent games?

    BlantyreTim,

Great to see you posting, a pal of mine put up a photo of your dad and him outside St Mirren stadium t’uther week, he was looking formidably well.

Been so long since the bhoys were here in Oz, everybody I know

making plans to go to the game here, guess what I’m in Sydney the

day before the game on another cruise, it had previously been

cancelled because of Covid and now scheduled for that time.

At least a lot of the bhoys and ghirls will be there well before I arrive

and at least we’ll get the build up atmosphere.
