Familiar failings

232

There was eniugh evidence on show last night to confirm Celtic’s Pot 2 opponent was on the softer side.  Despite this, our failure away from home in the Champions League continues.

Without Cameron Carter-Vickers we were always going to need everything to go our way.  After two successive VAR verdicts denied Leipzig a goal, you would be forgiven for thinking this was the case.  A familiar offering of a cheap goal put paid to that.

Disappointing though the result was, qualification for the knockout stages remains in Celtic hands.  Home wins in the next two games against Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk should be enough.

We should ask no less from Ange and the players.  Both opponents are vulnerable and miles off their best.

  1. P67 — very sharp response to last night’s result.

We have a thin / inexperienced squad and now we are hit by injuries.

Seems that the board view of AP is that he needs to start delivering a lot more.

If only we had that outlook in May 2019.

    Double standards?

  2. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Agree with the arithmetic Pablo.

7 points would be a terrific return.

One game at a time though.

The absence of CCV (a defensive rock and huge stabilising influence individually) …

… and the Cameron-Carl pairing which has grown up over a year ….

    Cannot be overstated.

    Big miss.

  3. I think Calmac’s injury was bound to happen sooner or later. He simply plays too many games. He should have been rested against Motherwell after Steve Clarke had made him play every minute of the three international matches.

Without him we’ll struggle. Bringing McCarthy on last night shows just how threadbare our midfield options are.

We didn’t win away from home with MON’s physically strong team and I don’t suppose we’ll do it playing the BR and Ange way. Why was Calmac, supposedly our holding midfielder, on the edge of their penalty area when he lost possession, leaving us wide open at the back? We are naive.

Can a team from a small league be successful in the CL? Someone mentioned that Club Brugge have 9 points out of 9 in their group and 3 clean sheets. I doubt very much that they play the Celtic way.

  5. I seem to remember games like this one in the past. We have not managed away ties in Europe. We need to alter our style to adapt till we find a formula which works.

In addition we have a number of players who are off form and need dropped. Can i suggest that we drop Hart, kyogo and Maeda. Good players all but in poor form.

I still trust Ange and I am convinced that he will make the changes

  6. Paul 67,

    Indeed.

We are all onboard with Angeball or we are not.

Angeball is a particular style of play. It is the overall tactic.

Of course we can still have task specific tactics to accommodate individual circumstances, but the style of play will not change.

The only cravat with Angeball is that we score when we are pressurising and expending energy.

We are currently not even taking 10% of chances created and this must change.

Score more goals than your opponents wins games.

We know what the journey entails, we just need to convince some players we believe and belong.

    HH, the journey continues.

  7. Following earlier euro game, I asked whether we could deploy the same tactics and personnel vs Real as Ross County and expect the same result.

    Equally suits Leipzig or Livi.

At the moment, the answer appears to be no.

Do we alter the players or do we vary the tactics?

    The latter appears cheaper.

    `but we’ve been competitive in all 3 games`

I believe that to be true but I feel there are many who don`t share our viewpoint.

  9. Disappointing, particularly as first goal exactlyxthe same as Ibrox,Shaktar, and last night.McG loses in midfield and Juranovic caught too far upfield.

At 1 1 we should have made changes,Hatate not tracking back as an example, why not shut shop, bring on McCarthy,GG,and Hablonoviic ( spelling) or move Jura to.MF and backfill with Ralston sometimes you need to.sacrifice ideals for a result.

GG due a start in my view.

A ‘doing’, and under pressure from the kick off, we knew the team, we knew the system and it was laid bare in the opening minutes. In the last few weeks players still look good value in terms of what we paid, but not in line with fanciful pre CL internet white noise.

We play a certain way that gives us a goal threat but leaves huge areas that better sides, will expose the same way they have since the Martin O’Neil era relaunched Celtic in Europe. Systems like players come and go, but the results are always Groundhog day.

A philosophy previously mauled in the Europa won’t improve with a. n.

other the defensive midfielder he needs a more pragmatic set up. Inverted, or full back / wing backs are exploited throughout every league in Europe, in the same way as park the bus opposites are torn up in every league against the team with the best players.

We don’t and never will buy Centre Backs and have them handy on the bench in case of injuries, we couldn’t keep the last one because he was a wantaway and on 20k a week. That’s why it’s Stephen Welsh ( who played well ) and it always will be Celtic potential, as backup. Field any two fantasy team CB’s you like past or present and Celtic would still have lost last night. Joe Hart (a tremendous bargain) almost made the identical mistake against Sevco, but he’s in second season of making Arthur Borucesque saves, the ones others can’t reach.

This particular Celtic philosophy was without six players who may otherwise have played last night you can single out your TV and wi fi ‘escape goats’ plead for your personal favourites, and blah, blah, blah the negatives. So long as you turn up for the ‘return leg’ where Ange and his Parkhead post mortem victims might flip the result inside the week, especially if you subscribe to the fine margins theory.

Some people are on the bandwagon they think it’s all over, its not, it begins again in Perth on Saturday 13.00

  11. There have been some comments about Calmac`s injury being predictable because of the number of games he’s has played in each of the previous five seasons. Apparently, he has averaged 62 games per season. Would the current injury not have occurred if he had only played , say, 55 per season?

  12. A few short weeks ago plenty of us were crowing about the strength and depth of our squad, how the players on our bench was better than those in the first team of our closest rivals. A couple of injuries and we are suddenly thread bare.

Hart, JJ, Maeda and Kyogo are all underperforming. Hart’s back up is probably close to him in ability and hopefully, at this moment, has less unforced errors in his bag of tricks. Need to play him and see if he deserves the jersey.

Ralston needs some games too to see if he can continue improving, he was solid enough last year.

Unfortunately we have no options to improve the CHs, nothing on the bench whatsoever while CCV and Starfelt are injured.

Up front GG should start ahead of Kyogo who is a shadow of the player from last season. Abada should get the nod ahead of Maeda who is doing nothing other than running about a lot.

Just my opinions of course. Ange has his favourites and he is loyal to them.

  13. No matter who the manager is, who the players are or where we’re playing, we inevitably give away cheap goals away from home in Europe. Hart killed us last night. He made some good saves as well to be fair but he killed the game for us with his moment of madness.

All to play for, we need to win our next two games.

  14. SAINT STIVS on 6TH OCTOBER 2022 12:41 PM

wait till the furore tonight when neil lennons novice Cypriot team play a pragmatic park the bus formation and then get a result against the mighty reds.

    couldnt happen could it ?

For me the difference between the teams last night was not technical ability.

    It was physicality and composure.

  17. Ange might have to realise, he’s asking guys to do things they are just not able to do at that level,CCV a big miss, too many off form at same time,O’Riley, Jota……

  18. Most of these players have played 3 champions league games in the last 5 starts. Is it any surprise that Juranovic might look a bit off form when he’s gone from playing against Blair Spittal to Vinícius Junior, Mudryk and Timo Werner?

  19. The quick kick outs should come to an end away from home in Europe.

We need to get street smart and learn to take the life out of a football match.

We were on the ropes last night at 1-1 and we were restarting play almost straight away. I thought that was silly.

  20. BSR 6TH Oct.

    Excellent summary as always.

Felt we mis read St.Mirren, and for me did likewise last night, we should have gone for a point considering injuries.

As you said it starts Saturday,we have a good allocation so there will be plenty of support,my choice of the Ormond Stand should prevent me getting smoked like a kipper, however we need to win and get the feel good factor back.

  21. Our domestic results with our first team have been as good as at any time last season. Until we fielded a shadow team against St Mirren our start was our best since 2000

Who knew that our players wouldn’t be as good against better teams than we played last season in Europe

  22. AN DÚN on 6TH OCTOBER 2022 1:17 PM

The quick kick outs should come to an end away from home in Europe.

That’s just finding a different way to lose, because nothing is surer than we will

  23. Maybe Angeball just doesn’t work in Europe.

At least not with the quality of players that Celtic can afford.

And it seems to be an essential component of Angeball that it is not capable of adjustment or modification or adaptation to suit different challenges.

In which case there are two options

    1. accept that domestic domination is as good as it’s going to get or

    2. realise that Angeball is hampering Celtic’s ambitions and adopt a different style.

  24. AD- agree, there’s times we need to take the sting out the game, and try to pass our way back in to it.

  25. I was so deflated about last night’s performance, I ended up watching Cha Du Ri’s comical own goal against Rennes to cheer me up.

We’ve been perfecting comical away performances for a long time now….

Back to the cluggers this weekend in a must-win.

    HH

  26. It’s entirely possible that as the players become more accustomed to playing against the very best that Celtic will get better playing Angeball. I certainly hope so, I’d say the signs are promising.

We have spent a lot of money it’s down to coaching and recruitment.

How much did “rangers” team cost against Liverpool better scouting may be.

Some said the are rotten(being polite) but didn’t loose a goal from open play,we are all over the place.

    Don’t blame the board.IMO

  28. TimHorton,

I’m assuming you didn’t watch it but the huns were not only all over the place but a bunch of cowards who set themselves up to be as uncompetitive as possible in the game.

Liverpool’s finishing was rotten or it would have been a cricket score. The entire game was an incredibly boring mismatch of epic proportions.

I appreciate, and it’s a small mercy, that we go on the pitch to try and compete. We just didn’t execute our plan any way near well enough.

  30. I don’t know anything about Brugge except what’s on the internet. They play 4-3-3 with a high line and high press, “high risk defensive strategy”.

They play out from the back, slow build up except for when they look for overloads in wide areas when defenders will play long balls into the channels

They don’t go long from the keeper, the coach emphasis retaining possession.

Looking at their champions league goals from open play they are characterized by numbers of players in the opposition final third. They attack in numbers.

They have a relatively new team with a young coach who has come through the ranks. They are in their 5th season in a row in the cl.

Some of the above might be wrong and I may be being unconsciously selective to suit my argument but it’s what’s there if you look it up.

I don’t think it sounds that different to what weee doing

  31. TH @ 1.58

    Have to disagree.

We did not spend enough in the summer.

And what we did spend we did not spend well.

We ended up with gaps in the squad / more loanees / an expensive benchwarmer.

Cannot see that AP would make a call on a FB he had no info on without help / direction.

Then there is the great unanswered question:

Not sure who made the call but it looks very much like the question was live.

JJ out for £15mill / more player investment vs no more spending / less squad churn.

My thoughts are that we should have made the sale if we had good prospects lined up.

Don’t know the full story but all the rumours / broken egos are in full view.

January will tell the full story.

No big spend then AP has been flashing his knicker elastic at the EPL.

Which will suit the board — more success means more spending.

They / DD don’t like that.
