Famine, LSE complaints, David, Billy and Henrik

938

I didn’t really know what to expect when I attended the launch of Peter Howson’s latest work on Brother Walfrid (more information here).  The headline item is a painting, which the artist attempts to capture the horrors of famine across the world, and the compassion which drove Walfrid to do something about the poor in his own community.  The painting contains figures which Howson accurately calls “grotesques”, a weighty work for a weighty subject.

The film accompanying the work manages to bring fresh insight into the potato blight which afflicted Europe in the mid-19th century, arriving in Ireland with devastating effect when Walfrid was a child.  The blight caused hardship in Scotland and elsewhere, but as we all know, became the Famine in Ireland.

Microbiology, Malthusian politics and liberal economics combined to leave over a million to die, while millions more emigrated, often only to survive a short existence thereafter.  Well done to Howson and his collaborators.  If you get a chance, check it out.

Best of luck to Henrik Larsson who moves up the managerial food chain by taking over at his former club, Helsingborgs.  If he can cut it at this level, I’d expect his next move to be to the UK.

Absolutely loved the Rangers Supporters’ Trust complaint to the London Stock Exchange about Mike Ashley, who I am sure will have acted without consulting his army of legal advisors when loaning Newco Rangers money to pay their wages this month.

The complaints are futile, neither Ashley nor Newco have broken any LSE rules, but they hammer home the divisions which are doing so much damage to the club.  The reality for Newco fans is unattractive, Ashley looks set to continue to pick off their commercial assets, while major shareholders will seek a high return on their speculative investment, but it’s reality nonetheless.

The future of this club is not going to look like Rangers.  Better to accept this and give Newco the support it needs, than turn it into the ‘next Rangers’, if you follow my drift.

Great news – Davie Hay will be on the blog on Thursday between 10:00 and 12:00.  We’ve done this before a few times now, so you know the drill.  Tune in and leave your questions on the blog which Davie will answer.

These events have been really enjoyable in the past, so put it in your diary.

We’re also having a party at the Supporters’ Club in Greenock on Friday 21 November with Davie and Billy McNeill to celebrate the launch of Caesar & The Assassin, their story of managing Celtic.  We have plenty planned for the night, so if you’d like to attend, get your ticket from the Greenock Supporters Club, or email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with the work Greenock in the subject line.

ALL ticket money is going to the Inverclyde Foodbank, you can pay as little as £1 for your ticket, up to a maximum donation of £10.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

  1. Greenpimata, Scrolling back last night saw you posted a link to an article which stated that 41% of non Officer rank of British Army in 1830 were Irish. By sheer co-incidence I attended a lecture last year dealing with much the same subject. This was during the period of Industrialisation in England, the Cities were overcrowded and the general health and physical condition of the average Englishman was extremely poor. Ireland with a rural population was targeted as the recruiting area for the army. The average Irishman were physically stronger but poor & unemployed. The prospect of 3 meals per day was enough to persuade many. They were not allowed serve in Ireland for obvious reasons but were shipped out to India & the most remote parts of the British Empire where they perished in their thousands from disease. There were 30,000 Irish fought in the Boer War about 10% of them killed. In appreciation of their sacrifice Queen Victoria granted Irish troops the privilege of wearing shamrock on St. Patrick’s day and the Irish were allowed form their own regiment, The Irish Guards. Sad but true.

  2. Two years cash due as you are a new club………………………………………..

JACKIE McNAMARA is desperate for Dundee United’s cash row with Rangers over Charlie Telfer to end.

The clubs are locked in a stalemate over the Scotland youth star’s summer switch from Murray Park to Tannadice.

Telfer has made four appearances for United – scoring in the 3-0 win over St Mirren earlier this month – while he made his one and only top-team appearance for Rangers as a sub in April.

Under SPFL rules clubs can receive compensation for developing and training players under 23 who move as free agents.

Rangers argue they are entitled to six years’ cash for the player between the age of 12 to 18.

United, meanwhile, believe the Championship side should only receive money to cover two years since liquidation in 2012.

Tannadice chairman Stephen Thompson was even claimed to have said “you’ve only got two years of history”.

With both clubs unable to decide on a fee for the player the dispute will now be heard by an independent panel.

And McNamara said: “For everybody it would be good if it was sorted, especially for young Charlie. He came in last week against St Mirren and he was excellent.

“He was a bit unfortunate not to start the game at Motherwell on Friday but for all of us it would be good if we can get that resolved so we can move on.

“There are all sorts of things come in to it, I’m not an expert on that. That will be up for the people in charge of the tribunal to decide.”

That was their last target market. Times change. Ashley is not a man that stands still. The guy is a very rich man. One thing he is not is stupid. Sevco feeder club or Newcastle.

  5. Regarding cutting costs at the Bigotdome, surely they can start with their internal PR staff and external PR advisors. It’s always been a mystery to me why they, or the liquidated company/club, ever needed such a resource given the scores of loyal scribes amongst the SMSM.

The problem for MA, is that TRFC are losing around £1M with the squad as it is. If they were selling out, the ground, they’d still be losing about £0.5M.

So if they get promoted I reckon they might be able to break even, if they can increase ticket cost, remain sold-out at the ground but keep the squad at the same level as it is.

Except I think there are still player contracts that increase with each promotion. There’s also a question over that squad competing at SPL level. I don’t think it can. If it doesn’t crowds go down. To get the increase in quality requires an increase in costs and you’re back to making losses.

I don’t think they’ll sell out the stadium either. The only way I ever see the football side making a profit is winning SPL at first time of asking and getting into CL Group stages and then being in them several years in a row. It just won’t happen.

I think the more likely route is MA keeping them at subsistence level and taking a relatively small profit year after year.

The gold and silver markets are crazy. I know that at one point a year or so ago there were more buying and selling contracts out there than there was physical commodity. If they’d all been called in, it would have been a complete disaster.

I think the authorities realised and cooled things down, which is why the gold and silver prices had a bit of a slump.

  15. Weeminger,

I think thems will struggle next season without serious investment and subsequently their crowds might be lower than previously seen.

  16. My friends in Celtic,

One thing I totally agree with is that Mike Ashley is not a stupid man. I really don’t think anybody can second guess him. He has a history of wrong footing even the most astute people, and it must be small comfort to Sevco fans that they now seem absolutely reliant on such an unpredictable and fickle man.

We have undeniable problems but that is just a sick never-ending joke.

PS : If I were a share type person I would watch Tesco’s, as Ashley has laid a substantial “bet” linked to his businesses that they will recover.

What is oor Michael up to……..one thing’s for sure, he wouldn’t have sanctioned this loan extension (or original £2m) unless he had received a ‘nod and a wink’ from the SPFA on the dual ownership scenario ……. the corruption and rule-bypassing continues…….however, with his avoidance of any communication with the shareholders, I think he is simple going to accummulate assets and ‘cash-in’ at an appropriate point…..!!

  23. Mr Moonbeams,
