Famine, LSE complaints, David, Billy and Henrik

938

I didn’t really know what to expect when I attended the launch of Peter Howson’s latest work on Brother Walfrid (more information here).  The headline item is a painting, which the artist attempts to capture the horrors of famine across the world, and the compassion which drove Walfrid to do something about the poor in his own community.  The painting contains figures which Howson accurately calls “grotesques”, a weighty work for a weighty subject.

The film accompanying the work manages to bring fresh insight into the potato blight which afflicted Europe in the mid-19th century, arriving in Ireland with devastating effect when Walfrid was a child.  The blight caused hardship in Scotland and elsewhere, but as we all know, became the Famine in Ireland.

Microbiology, Malthusian politics and liberal economics combined to leave over a million to die, while millions more emigrated, often only to survive a short existence thereafter.  Well done to Howson and his collaborators.  If you get a chance, check it out.

Best of luck to Henrik Larsson who moves up the managerial food chain by taking over at his former club, Helsingborgs.  If he can cut it at this level, I’d expect his next move to be to the UK.

Absolutely loved the Rangers Supporters’ Trust complaint to the London Stock Exchange about Mike Ashley, who I am sure will have acted without consulting his army of legal advisors when loaning Newco Rangers money to pay their wages this month.

The complaints are futile, neither Ashley nor Newco have broken any LSE rules, but they hammer home the divisions which are doing so much damage to the club.  The reality for Newco fans is unattractive, Ashley looks set to continue to pick off their commercial assets, while major shareholders will seek a high return on their speculative investment, but it’s reality nonetheless.

The future of this club is not going to look like Rangers.  Better to accept this and give Newco the support it needs, than turn it into the ‘next Rangers’, if you follow my drift.

Great news – Davie Hay will be on the blog on Thursday between 10:00 and 12:00.  We’ve done this before a few times now, so you know the drill.  Tune in and leave your questions on the blog which Davie will answer.

These events have been really enjoyable in the past, so put it in your diary.

We’re also having a party at the Supporters’ Club in Greenock on Friday 21 November with Davie and Billy McNeill to celebrate the launch of Caesar & The Assassin, their story of managing Celtic.  We have plenty planned for the night, so if you’d like to attend, get your ticket from the Greenock Supporters Club, or email me at celticquicknews@gmail.com with the work Greenock in the subject line.

ALL ticket money is going to the Inverclyde Foodbank, you can pay as little as £1 for your ticket, up to a maximum donation of £10.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

The latest Keiser report, the second half of the report discusses some very sick but enlightening stuff, a line from max talking about the investigation into the Westminster paedo ring about not being able to find anyone suitable qualified to lead the investigation as all are implicated, just shows you how sick Britannia is.

  6. So Ashley put up another million.

Onerous contracts sees that million liquidate to Charles of Normandy.

Ashley gets a wee bit of a biger percentage of the badge.

Once Ashley has whole badge. He runs the merry retail show.

Knowing the Orcs from their previous metamorphisis. they require league success and CL success plus millions spent on the best players. If they don’t get that they revolt.

So at revolt, Ashley own’s image rights and retail wing only profitable if the metamorphisis are going good guns. He does not own the club and therefor without pumping in more millions has no great control over club direction re. spending and ultimately success. So to gain the success to make his retail side profitable he has to spend more to make the metamorphisis compete with Scotlands bigger clubs. the more money pumped in the less the short to medium and possibly even long term profits as there appears to be no real way for that club to be in profit.

  7. You can be sure the Sevco/ DU spat over Telfer will be settled out of court, or no comment from both parties so not to upset the Zombies.

  8. !!Bada Bing!!

Any settlement out of court results in Sevco admitting they have no case to answer.

They should never have let it get this far. They have blown this one and fair play to United for having the balls to carry it through to this point.

We may well be missing something, such as a planned future violation of FFP rules.

Ashley is not known as an idiot in business, but he has been known to gamble wrongly.

For me,it’s clear that major investment is needed at Ibrox-even given our custodians’ approach of presenting them an open goal rather than an insurmountable obstacle.

However,I reckon his belief is that he can make profit, kudos, success all from the sectarian idiots.

If he gets it right,it may be at our expense too.

  19. See some on here like to have a pop at Rangers or Sevco.well i think it would be wise just to concern ourself with our club, our stadium has issuses itselfs that needs attended to. still see plenty of supporters hanging about on match days, ok you can go to the kerrydale suite if you are a s-b holder, but for them that dont .in the winter a trip to the Superstore which to my mind for a big club like ours is far to small, for a heat in these winter days and nights. not everyone can afford corporate, think about the ordinary fan who over the yrs who have carried this club, for a change, and i thought they were going to build something near the old school.

  24. Concert tickets were relatively cheap in the late 60s early 70s however LPs were not about 2 quid or more. I was earning 10 pound a week as an engineering apprentice so an album cost about one fifth of my income.

  25. 20. Without fans who pay at the turnstile, football is nothing. Sometimes we are inclined to forget that. The only chance of bringing them into stadiums is if they are entertained by what happens on the football field.
