Faux precipice, the £30m man, fan shakedown

1204

Lots going on today, we’ll maybe have a second blog this evening on Craig Gordon, but for now….

Last month I wrote that Dave King’s Fit and Proper issue was a faux precipice.  If he was not found Fit and Proper he, “could easily appoint his own people to the PLC board, he would be able to attend board meetings and bark whatever orders necessary.”  This issue would not prevent King from investing in the club, or from gaining the kind of influence Mike Ashley had until recently.

There are no SFA rules which could prohibit an unfit and improper person from being the 100% owner of a club.  The matter is in the very literal sense, a formality.

Still, in passing such a tainted convict, who has already sat on the board of a club which sailed into liquidation, was subject to considerable criticism from an SPL judicial report, and had his honesty derided by a South African judge, the SFA, have made an improper decision.  It’s a marginal call whether our man is better working on the inside or taking nothing to do with it.  Neither option is satisfactory, the only permanent resolution to this scourge of the ages is to leave Scottish football behind.

For what it’s worth, I think King is utterly brilliant.  Sounding a bit like Rhett Butler in an interview with the Daily Record, he said, “Quite frankly I don’t give a damn what people say or write about me.  I will do whatever I think is best for me. The media and the fans will make no difference to my success or failure.”

Stand down all you psychological profilers.

The guy is perfect, how did he convince so many fans he was good for them?  Wait, I remember.  In the same article he said:

“The only way we can access that revenue is to compete with Celtic. To do that, in our first year back we are going to have to treble our wage bill as a minimum. Depending on how Dermot Desmond responds we may need to make it four times bigger.”

“First year back……. treble our wage bill…… minimum….. may need to make it four times bigger”.

He went on, “I have lost £20m in Rangers already and I’m happy to lose another £30m because I love the team”.

£30m.  Go for it, Dave, we’d all love to see it.  That would teach Celtic a lesson.

Here’s a few predictions.  The No Surrender to a perceived enemy days will be back in spades.  They need to dislodge Celtic, its influence and its support.  Expect bad PR when a fan illegally disposes of litter and the onslaughts against our CEO to continue.  They have not been able to lay a glove on Ronny for months, but wait until we draw a game at home.  Players should avoid camera phones, and Scott Brown should never sit down in public.  Anthony Stokes will be cautioned against use of a flagrantly Irish accent.

Whatever money is available will flood into the coffers in a desperate attempt to close the gap with Celtic, but there will be no trebling of wages or £30m investment.  Instead, the fans will be asked to stump up the big numbers.  In the event Mike Ashley is held in abeyance, the window between now and the money running out is critical.  I expect nothing more than a shambles, they don’t have the money or the intelligence to take Celtic on, but this is their one big play.  Celtic are ready.

Fancy winning two tickets for premium seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Trophy Day on Sunday, courtesy of Magners?  To win, email me the name of the Celtic keeper who won Sportswriters’ Player of the Year this season.  Put the name in the SUBJECT field of your email and send to celticquicknews@gmail.com

COMPETITION CLOSES AT 21:00 tonight, 20 May.

There was some stunning news today.  Mary’s Meals, a charity founded in Scotland 13 years ago, now feed over 1m children each day.  Almost three thousand of them are in schools funded by you in Malawi.  While entering the competition you might want to donate £1 to the Mary’s Meals pot here.

This success is partly yours, so read what you’ve done.

  1. It’s the official recognition of them being the same club, despite what Company Law says, that annoys me more.

It’s the Member Clubs’ website, so why do they allow The Big Lie to flourish?

    A real puzzler, that one.

  2. SoT,

I wasn’t in Lisbon but I was in Milan. I lived in Holland at the time. It is true to say, I think the Dutch expected us to win but I had, like you, seen Feijenoord hammer AC. Van Hanegem was utterly brilliant against them. So, I wasn’t too surprised at the result.

I wasn’t too surprised in Seville either, although that was a far far better experience.

  3. Are the SFA not duty bound to its members as to how they got to this result on King, not that it would make any difference, but it would be interesting to know how they reached this verdict , and as to how the voting went, or is it not up for the supporters of the clubs in Scottish football to be told as to how our game is being ran?

    Is it a secret ?

I find the OC/NC issue an energy sapper but when complaints were raised about the CQN sourced advert in the Sunday Herald nothing inaccurate was found to justify chastising the SH for publishing it or CQN for placing it.

Not quite a legal court (I think it was the ASA complaints were made to ) but close enough to use as justifying how Celtic supporters see things.

There is an article on CQN Magazine somebody might want to link to (I’m away from my laptop) but markers like that advert will still be there to fall back on to remind them that even the football rules could not prevent continous full SFA membership (the raft they cling to in order to claim same club) being interrupted at the end of July 2012 when a club under an invented “conditional membership” ie ultra vires, played it’s first game.

Having said all that I’m reminded of the Month Python scene where the French soldier in the Castle taunts King Arthur.

Another link more amusing if someone can find the You Tube file.

I’ll be very surprised if DiCK puts any of his own money into sevco…….and there will be precious little left from the SB money once Michael, and the 3 berries’ loans are paid back (circa £8m, not counting interest) .

…… and if Hibs send them back to the championship, ( not impossible with the return leg being away from that hell-hole) there will be even less SB money for DiCK to filter out, just like our heroes SDM, agent whyte and greengo did previously……..

I think the problem some have is in believing that Celtic is still the Club they have always supported.

When we became supporters, we were only interested in the team. Now, most of us are interested in the Club and how it is managed as a business/social entity. If the Club fails to match our moral ethics ie tell the truth about Sevco and confront the Authorities on many issues, we feel let down and out emotional support for the team is lessened a fraction. Over time, those fractions add up and, eventually, the line will have been crossed for some heretofore committed supporters and their love of Celtic will evaporate.

For some, it is possible to ignore the business side of the Club, for others it is not. I have a feeling that I am approaching that line ( but I have renewed!).

They’re accountable to no-one so they don’t have to publish anything. However, it’s this kind of lack of transparency that loses them credibility. Not with guys like us TD (they’ve never had credibility with us for obvious reasons) but with others in the game including the press etc.who seem to accept them. We all know that the whole of Scottish football needs to be dismantled and rebuilt properly so that transparency and accountability are core values. I guess the question is how best that can be achieved?

Well, if it were to be officially recognised that they are a new club, with a 3 year history and 2 divisional titles to their name, would it affect their attendances?

And would the other Member Clubs, who allow the website to promote The Big Lie, be concerned about any effect on their away following?

I’m not so sure of my ground here, but I thought a liquidated company that sets up a new company with a name too close to the original company, with branding too similar as well, is also breaching Company Law, and leaving itself open to being pursued by the previous creditors.

I must be wrong, or surely it would be happening?

  13. TonyDonnely

That is exactly the point English and Spence made but the Move On mantra is loud because they know that their history from 2000 does not bear scrutiny under the lense of fair play.

What is needed though is to identify deliberate lies.

There are three in 2005, 2011 and 2012 and they are all linked to the wee tax case ebts where information that would have resulted in different outcomes that would have changed the nature of subsequent enquiries very much to RFC’S detriment was kept hidden.

One way or another the SFA will have to answer hard questions that so far the media have not wanted to ask.

  14. natknow

Yup, it’s a tough question, seems once they make a decision, no one can, or rather will question it, back to the seceret stuff again as I said.

I know this is easy for me to say as someone who has been in no way involved with Res12……..but ‘I’m sitting here thinking’ that if Res12 doesn’t see the light of day soon and doesn’t lead to some title stripping then the ‘move on hurting Tims’ message will drown out the truth forever.

On the ‘same club” myth, if the authorities or more importantly our club have not definitively stated the obvious, i.e. that they are indeed a new club, it would be my intention to raise this at the AGM and ask the board point blank, yes or no, no discussion, ..

“Do Celtic FC regard the club liquidated in 2012 and currently playing under the banner of “The Rangers Football Club” out of Ibrox, as a new club – Yes or No ? ”

Anyone who can read can see that they were liquidated.

  27. Jamesgang

The underlying aim of Res12 was accountability, not title stripping.

It’s not being resisted because of the latter but by the former.

That remains regardless of DK shenanigans.

Football globally does not want to be accountable because it stops them doing as they please. It is supported in Scotland by the msm but when football turns on them, as happened the other night then the game can change.

I expect a lot of “move on” platitudes from DK later today in setting out his plans.

I have no problem leaving DK to run TRFC as he pleases, I do have problems with his efforts not being totally transparent and what the SFA are doing to make sure he is operating fairly because so far they have made no effort to do so.

I take your point about Res12 but the SFA are resisting answering the questions it raises but it ain’t over.

  28. Stop kidding yourself, guys. As far as the footballing authorities are concerned they’re the same club and the Celtic Board are going along with the charade.
