Fifa’s ‘The Best’ shines from ‘67

286

I discussed their winning of the European Cup with each of the Lisbon Lions. To say they knew nothing the impact their achievement would have is an understatement. While the uniqueness of the event was clear at the time, they were the first British team to reach the final, never mind win the trophy; they could never know light from that day would shine as brightly half a century into the future.

Celtic fans won the ‘The Best’ award from Fifa yesterday for the full stadium tifo at the game against Hearts in May to mark the 50th anniversary of Lisbon. We won it because football people, of all colours, respect heritage. And heritage comes no greater than Celtic’s.

None of this would have happened without Jock Stein and his players. They provided the foundation for everything that followed, including Martin O’Neill’s revival of the club in 2000 and Brendan Rodgers’ general Invincible-ness.

Just about every element of what you recognise as Celtic today is due to them: the trophies and glory, Champions League nights, the stadium and Celtic Way, even achievements of the Foundation can be traced back to the foundations laid in ‘67.

Congratulations to everyone involved with the tifo display. Which I missed. But I’m sure it was nice.

KEVIN GRAHAM hosts another match day podcast from Hampden on Saturday featuring some of FIFA’s Best Supporters in the World.

This week’s Matchday Special saw Brendan Rodgers’ side carry a 59-match undefeated domestic run into the League Cup semi final against Neil Lennon’s Hibs.

Kevin provides pre and post-match discussion as well as in-match analysis in what will be a regular Celtic State of Mind feature.

  1. The gang calling for names of whoever came to the Alves decision, same old threat mentality

  2. Fat Jabba’s paws all over this, what gets me is they pay him serious money for this, an illiterate slug could do better imo, Oh wait…..it’s total amature hour…..enjoy :-)

A Rangers spokesman said: “Rangers are shocked by this decision. In the minds of all fair-minded followers of football it will be seen as devoid of credibility and balance.

“Rangers are not seeking to make excuses for losing the match. Motherwell played to the referee’s whistle.

“That is their right but there were many aspects of the match which cause concern, both for player safety and the way in which we want to encourage players to play the game.”

He added: “We do not seek to personalise our criticism. The officials have to be respected, even where we might dispute the decisions that they reach.

“We do, however, have several players injured after the game – one seriously . Yet, this decision has singled out only one player – a Rangers player – for punishment.”

“We find this inexplicable. Are we being asked to believe just one player was guilty of violent conduct in Sunday’s game?

“If that is the case, then it is clear Rangers are being assessed to a different standard from others in the Scottish game.”

‘In the minds of all fair-minded followers of football it will be seen as devoid of credibility and balance.’

    Rangers spokesman

The spokesman also criticised the role of the compliance officer and the workings of the disciplinary process.

He said: “We believe the current system for referring matters to disciplinary tribunals requires radical overhaul.

“It is too easy for those with agendas to pick over and highlight minor incidents in a game, whilst ignoring the reality of what took place during the game as a whole.

“We do not know and will not be told who referred this matter, nor what motivated them. So much seems to turn on whether or not a referee was looking at an incident rather than on assessing what actually occurred.

“Incidents missed by a referee are judged to a far harsher standard than those observed by an official but called wrongly.”

The spokesman added: “Rangers share a common goal to all with the Scottish game at heart. We want to see good football. Referees have a crucial role to play in achieving that.

“We do not believe the current referral procedure assists them or benefits the Scottish game.

“Those of us who care about the Scottish game share an interest in enabling players to play without fear of serious injury, rather than convening, with great solemnity, distinguished panels to adjudicate on matters the players themselves quickly shrug off as handbags.

“Rangers will be declining the offer of a two-match suspension.”

Condolences to you on your losses.

Ar dheis lámh Dhé go raibh a n-anam uasal.

  4. Was initially surprised at the Alves ban then realized Moult and Bowman were not cited.

They must have a big game coming up?

The SFA will go for the hat trick of three straight acquittals in cases of huns v compliance offer.

Full credit to the huns on breaking another record.

  5. 9 games in December is a joke, why the hurry? Trying to get presents, work nights out, etc, the clowns who run our game are an absolute joke, no wonder attendances fall at that time of year.

  6. WEET WEET WEET:

Sorry to hear of Jacqueline’s passing, may God Bless her Soul.

    As always sign off…

    WEET WEET WEET:

Sorry to hear of Margaret’s passing, may God Bless her Soul.

    As I always sign off…

    Until we meet again…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  8. May I also offer my condolences to the ever growing list of poor souls who have lost those close to their hearts.

  9. Statement o’clock by the huns is hilarious, as usual.

    It is borderline actionable.

    Deflection as usual.

The gift that keeps on giving.

An absolute riddy of a statement.

    Hail Hail

  10. THE EXILED TIM

    Their self delusion is hilarious.

Guess that’s cause they’re full of dignity.

Shame they did not show same concern for player safety when Miller went two footed with studs up and knee high on Armstrong and Holts scissor from behind on Paddy with Maddens approval or Hollidays attempt at breaking Paddy’s leg at Ibrox.

Their whining is so pathetic they are genuine contenders for the worlds biggest pussies award.

  11. Bada Bada.

JPT quickly back to his day job after selfies with Maradonna and being on stage as we were given best fans award, has said.

Trying to keep Late Jan/Feb free for possible European football and also possibility of Scottish cup replays or words to that affect.

    Hail Hail

  12. Fan-A-Tic

I posted this on the last blog, it takes paranoia to levels you never thot possible, what they get away with is astonishing.

They sure can dish it out, but like all bullies they canny take it, winkers to a monkey.

As most are talking about elbows, scroll down to near the bottom, elbows himself shows you how a proper elbow without punishment is executed.

‘Alves gets 2 game ban, can we appeal it?’

    heheheheheheheheh

  14. Deflection Deflection Deflection from the reason for the score on Sunday and the other disasters this season. It was not because Pedro’s Sevco are crap, it is because there is a conspiracy against them. Poor wee Huns

  15. JNP- Thanks for reply, but no common sense in cramming 9 games into 4 weeks for me, specially December HH

  16. Bada.

    I agree.

Not that it makes it ok but I’m pretty certain last Dec was the same.

I stand to be corrected on that as my memory is not what it once was.

It’s all the medication of course, nothing at all to do with starting to become a doddery old git :-)

  17. Rowley Birkin QC on

Celtic should just ban STV and BBC Scotland from our press conferences. Our FIFA award not worthy of a mention on either channels main evening Scottish news programme! An absolute disgrace.

  18. The reason Alves has been done and not Bowman is because the referee didnt see the Alves incident. The referee did see the Bowman elbow, thats why they cant take retrospective action, Thems the rules.

  19. Weet Weet Weet, my condolences, may you and yours find strength in each other.

Cosy Corner Bhoy, BMCUWP’s, RIP Margaret, I know you guys will be support for each other and the girls, Keep the Faith.

PapaJoe55, your buddies are in my thoughts, you too mhate.

And for young Oskar, too young, far far too young. Strength to your family.

    Sad day.

But also a day which again demonstrates what a gift Paul has given us all.

It may not seem like much, a few words written on a blog, but I’ve written such when I have lost, and to know you are in the thoughts of so many friends, some you have met, others not yet, is comforting indeed.

So thanks Paul, yer a star sir.

  20. The sevco statement is all about them portraying the victim in front of their fans.

A bit more comment from Celtic would be appropriate at times.

  21. Oh, and well done to us.

Officially the best support in the world!

Like we didn’t know that already:-)

As for the BBC and STV, can you no smell the hurt?

    Beautiful fragrance it is too.

  22. Its been a very sad catch up on CQN to tonight . Sincere condolences to all who have lost loved ones . I hope you all find strength to cope with your grief . God bless you all ,take care and may those that have passed away rest in peace .

TTR, rules? In relation to a club playing in blue out of Ibrox?

    What are rules again?

    ——–

They laughed when the SFA turned a blind eye to the old Clubs cheating, now outraged at the rules correctly being applied. Muppets.

  24. Good evening, friends.

I suppose it’s only right that I let everyone know my bets for tonight so that you all know what the results won’t be. So it’s Oldham, Hibs, Partick and St Johnstone – 4 x 25p trebles and a whopping 10 shilling accumulator! And separately a 50p treble on the Hibs-Hearts TV game – at least 3 goals, 11 corners and 6 cards.

Won’t quite be able to retire on my winnings but, for me it’s just about beating the bookie ;-)

  25. prestonpans bhoys on

Firstly condolences to all the bhoys who have lost ones today.

On a happier note looks like BT have attributed colour microphones to their commentators in respect of previous teams played.

Been to loads of Edinburgh derbies, 80 % were absolutely pish…….

  26. THETIMREAPER on 24TH OCTOBER 2017 7:13 PM

The referee did see the Bowman elbow, thats why they cant take retrospective action, Thems the rules.

Compliance officer Tony McGlennan deemed the flashpoint worthy only of a yellow card because it was a reckless challenge. You can’t retrospectively dish out a yellow card – just a red.

  27. Papa Joe 55.

I’m sorry I missed your post initially.

    Deepest condolences to you.

It’s never easy losing good friends.

    Hail Hail

  28. BMCUW and CCB

I wasn’t aware of your posts about Margaret’s stroke and then find that sadly she’s passed away. My thoughts and prayers are with you both and those who loved her.

    RIP Margaret.

  29. PAPAJOE55

Condolences to you on the loss of your good friends.

    May they rest in peace.

  30. Anyone got a link to Alves red card challenge please.

STV didn’t show it but did show the assault on the huns nose.
