Fife, soft tissue and protecting investors

816

A stream of criticism appeared in yesterday’s comments section to greet media coverage of yesterday’s Scottish Cup draw away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle or Dunfermline on 4 February.  Such is our lot (long) after shock cup defeats; remember, these guys literally have to write something.  No one mentioned 1961 so put your money on a trip to Fife next month.

A few moments ago Celtic confirmed Beram Kayal went through his operation yesterday and is now targeting a return to action for preseason.  Irrespective of the circumstances of the incident in which he was injured, Beram’s is another in a long list of soft tissue injuries Celtic players have suffered in recent seasons, a fact which should engage minds at the club.

Rangers issued a really curious statement following the suspension of trading in their shares by the Plus Stock Exchange.  Many Rangers fans have invested thousands of pounds in club shares and bonds, so one would have expected to read the obligatory suggestion from the company that investors take professional advice when addressing the withdrawal of the share disposal service.  Still, at least they didn’t suggest “Rangers Football Club PLC could survive any administration event but feels it would not be the end of the world if it didn’t”.  That kind of comment from those charged to look after their interests really would alarm shareholders.

  4. RANGERS and Celtic could go head-to-head in the battle to land £500,000-rated Rapid Vienna striker Hamdi Salihi.

Celtic have lodged their interest in the Albanian striker in recent weeks but Express Sport can reveal that he has been on Ally McCoist’s wanted list since the last transfer window.

The SPL champions tried to broker a deal back in August but they didn’t have the funds available to seal the deal that would have teamed Salihi up with Nikica Jelavic again.

McCoist is now set to renew his interest with Stevie Naismith out for the season, Steven Whittaker missing for two months, Kyle Lafferty ko-ed until next month and the future of Jelavic still very much up in the air.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has already confirmed his interest and has the money available to do a deal just now although the Light Blues would need to sell before they could buy.

Salihi, who is also aware of Rangers interest, said: “Celtic is a club with a big name that might be a good step for my career. “I know but still nothing concrete.

“It would definitely fit all conditions, even for Rapid.”

Rapid sports manager Stefan Ebner has insisted that neither of the Old Firm have been in contact saying : “We have not even heard anything from Celtic for me it’s so far so just a rumour.”

Meanwhile, Rangers boss McCoist is also an admirer of Real Valladolid striker Javi Guerra – although that deal is likely to be too rich for the SPL champions.

Guerra was recommended by former Ibrox star Maurice Johnston although McCoist is unlikely to be able to match Valladolid’s £2 million asking price and then the player’s personal terms on top of that as well.

St Johnstone striker Francisco Sandaza also remains on the list and a pre-contract looks the most likely outcome for that move.

That has upset Saints boss Steve Lomas, although the move has been held up by who is actually representing the player.

Former Dundee United star Sandaza expects to sign his pre-contract agreement at Murray Park this week.

  14. Rangers face up to Ibrox credit crunch as effects of HMRC tax case begin to bite

Rangers will need to contend with their own localised version of the credit crunch for the next few months until the verdict in Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs case against them is finally announced.

Tough times: Rangers owner Craig Whyte has admitted the tax case is ‘a dark cloud’ over the club Photo: ACTION IMAGES

    By Ewing Grahame

    10:02PM GMT 10 Jan 2012

The Top Tier Tribunal meets in Edinburgh from Jan 16-18 in order to decide whether, as HMRC argue, the club is guilty of tax evasion through the use of Employee Benefit Trusts from 2000-2010.

Should the verdict, which is expected in either March or early April, go against Rangers then the club could face a bill of £49 million in unpaid tax, interest and penalties.

On Monday the PLUS stock exchange suspended trading in Rangers shares as a result of the club failing to abide by the Companies Act (2006) by not publishing audited accounts or holding their AGM on time.

They could also face a fine of £100,000 from PLUS, who wish to know why owner Craig Whyte failed to disclose to them until Nov 30 that he had been disqualified from becoming a company director for seven years by the UK Insolvency Service in 2000.

Whyte concedes that the tax case represents “a dark cloud” over Rangers, who could not possibly pay such a bill. He is not alone in thinking that way. Former finance director Donald McIntyre had £300,000 of the club’s assets frozen last year while he sued for alleged breach of contract, a case which was settled out of court in December.

Former chief executive Martin Bain, who is seeking £1.3 million from Rangers, has frozen £480,000 of their assets due – his solicitors claim – to the risk of insolvency.

HMRC themselves have already frozen £2.3 million over a separate tax bill of £2.8 million (plus an added £1.4 million in penalties) dating from nine months ago.

In November, Capita Trustee Services, which had taken legal action in pursuit of alleged unpaid fees, also agreed an out-of-court settlement.

Celtic took the unprecedented step of demanding cash up front before handing over tickets for away fans for the Old Firm match at Parkhead.

Independent financial analyst David Low, who helped engineer Fergus McCann’s takeover of Celtic in 1994, believes that Rangers will now be forced to pay in full for everything they need for the next few months.

“Until the tax case is clarified, one way or another, then it will be impossible for Rangers to plan for the future,” he said. “That involves having the trading of shares restored, it involves having qualified accounts signed off and spending money on both the team and the club.

“As things stand, there are an increasing number of third parties who are unwilling to lend them any credit at all because they know Rangers’ financial position.”

Of course, it is possible that venture capitalist Whyte, as secured creditor, could potentially stand to profit from the club going bust, by then taking them out of administration, debt-free, after buying the club 10 months ago from Sir David Murray for just £1.

The chairman confessed in October that the club faces a credibility crisis. “It affects us commercially. How can anyone enter into, say, a five-year deal with Rangers in the midst of this uncertainty?”

The SFA have confirmed Tuesday’s Telegraph report that Rangers have until March 31 to publish audited accounts and prove that they do not owe money to the tax authorities if they are to be granted a licence to enter European competition next season.

Stewart Regan, the SFA’s chief executive, had publicly demanded clarification from Rangers in November concerning Whyte’s previous ban on becoming a company director.

The governing body confirmed on Tuesday that the club has responded to that request but that Regan would not be commenting on the substance of that reply.

What if Craig Whyte’s cunning plan is to have a sham divorce and have all the assets but none of the liabilities transferred to his wife.

Wee Craigie, whose career as a Scottish entrepreneur was looking decidedly shaky anyway, gets barred for life from holding public or private office but his wife now owns Rangers.

  25. As they continue to suffer from midfield absences, Manchester United could be looking at Celtic midfielder, Ki Sung-Yeung, to fill a vital role in the team.

The plight of the club was so extreme that Sir Alex Ferguson was forced to bring Paul Scholes out of retirement in an effort to beef up his midfield.

The worries began early in the season when the club revealed that Tom Cleverley would be out until February at the earliest as he copes with an ankle injury.

Darren Fletcher was unveiled as another long-term injury in December, when it came out that the Scot was taking time off from the game to battle a stomach illness he had endured for the past four years.

Ki is a player that has featured very consistently for Celtic this season, starting in 15 of his 20 Scottish Premier League appearances.

The South Korean also started seven of the Hoops’ Europa League fixtures this campaign and has been sounded out as a major talent.

If the Red Devils weren’t enduring such troubled times in regards to injuries, Ki’s move may not even be discussed, however the problems exist and he may very well get his shot at the big time.

The central midfielder is currently valued at around £7m and would have Korean Republic legend compatriot Park Ji-Sung to welcome him to Old Trafford.

The 22 year-old had an impressive 2011, in which he was named South Korean player of the year.

Despite his age, Ki has already accumulated 44 international caps for his national team and carries experience beyond his years.
