Five in open battle for central defensive places

400

After the dust settled on Sunday’s game I considered the four central defenders we fielded.  Acknowledging his poor performance, Brendan Rodgers reminded us Dedryck Boyata was just back from injury and will improve.  Jozo Simunovic coasted through the game but got drawn into the spate of off the ball acts which was a feature of the game.

Kris Ajar (19) continued his excellent recent form, while Jack Hendry (22) didn’t miss a beat when introduced after Jozo’s red card.  There will be tougher challenges ahead, but these two are more than comfortable at this level and have a genuine claim to a starting place at Hampden.

The Morton game a week earlier gave Marvin Compper an opportunity to show how match-fit he is – not sufficiently, was the outcome.  Marvin is at the club to bring experience and stability to the defensive line.  Our four games before the split are all against lower half of the league opposition.  The German international must be given plenty of game time in the coming month.

What our central defence will look like for the qualifiers remains an open book.  All five players discussed above are under consideration.  I expect comings and goings throughout the window in this area too.  Brendan will expect Marvin to play a significant part, but it will be a battle for all of them; which is a good thing.

  1. My friends in Celtic,

So Sevilla put Man Utd to the sword at Old Trafford.

Compare the finances of the two clubs then tell me that money is everything.

It totally reaffirms my belief that we should not always quote finance for our European failings. We should and will do much better in Europe. However my view has not changed in that our problem is physiological and we should enlist the help of a sports physiologist.

    HH.

PS : Although individual defensive errors like Sundays will need to be erased or we will never progress.

  2. I see that the BBC managed to put up the Kille v Aberdeen score last night, and also this morning.

But hadn’t the spunk to put up the score of the most important game of the weekend, ie the Bad V the good guy’s,Disgraceful.

I watch the BBC for World News, and the Sport that happens in Scotland, but all they have done is sicken me. No News whatsoever regarding our latest game.I was unwell at the weekend, and in my Bed when the Game was on.

Thankfully I spotted a post from The Exiled Tim giving information about the game being shown, I watch the whole game around 5.am the next day.

I enjoyed watching it but my god what a Referee.

I’ve seen some bad refereeing in my football supporting life watching Celtic, in the past, refs like Wharton, Davidson,Tait, Dallas. And the unbelievable the Reverend Mike McCurry, who managed to book 9 Celtic players against The cheaters of Scottish football, I thought that I would never see another Referee that could be as bad as him,

I was wrong,up steps the worst referee I have seen in Scottish football ever.

At least the ref’s named above were a bit more clever in covering up their love for the cheats of this World, Collum never even tried to covered up his mistakes.

He’s the worst referee I have ever seen, disgraceful refereeing, he should never referee another Celtic game in his life.

In fact he should never referee another game, ever.

  3. Just watched the Killie Aberdeen highlights. Abysmal refereeing at Killie’s goal – Brophy totally takes out Logan (arguably couldn’t happen to a nicer person) but the ref and assistent ref give nothing.

The standard is getting worse. I’m not quite sure how, but somehow it is…

    What,Collum?

I’ll have you know that this fine upstanding gentleman is now Scotland’s Premier representative at UEFA/FIFA level.

    Scary,innit?

Hope you’re feeling much much better shortly, bud.

No. I think our fitness is fine and I don’t believe we have a problems with sport physics.

I believe we have a big problem with mental toughness and belief in European matches, especially away European games. I think this is a long inherited trait that we need to resolve.

Well the MSM are at it again if you cant beat Brendan Rodgers and Celtic you just try to unsettle him and suggest he will leave to join a diddy team ( Southampton ). This is despite Brendan saying he is perfectly happy atParkhead .The Huns cant buy a manager but the MSM are quiet on that subject .H.H.

Not that I disagree, but what are the mechanics of the “long inherited trait” ? I.e. how is it transmitted / bequeathed?

    Oldtim67,

    Totally agree regarding Collum.

I posted after the game , that in all my years (68) of supporting Celtic, I have never seen a worse example of downright cheating from a referee.

I mentioned yesterday about the SFA and associated stakeholders in the game, media, etc., have adopted a policy of Celtic’s domination not being in the best interests of the game.

Therefore , we have to be stopped.

It is not just about bigotry now. It’s business.

  20. I’m sure I saw a Horizon-type doc on Stephen Hawking in the early 80s. He didn’t have the voice synthesiser then, but one of his students could-miraculously!-decipher what he was trying to say.

I worked with him on a book – the Einstein centenary volume, General Relativity, in 1979. I could understand him. just about. He was a very well-mannered fellow, charming, friendly and – no doubt about it – quite clever ;-)

So, now you know the kind of company I am accustomed to keep, how about coming round to my view that we ought to introduce a system of sharing gate money – say 25 percent of receipts, including a pro-rata slice of season-book income, for the visiting team? You know it makes sense.

Was Stephen Hawking into writing cookery books too? Ffs,is there no end to the guy’s talent?

Kidding. No-one’s ever called you stupid. That would be wrong.

Personally,I think that there is a lot to support the view that the teams who make the effort, and pay out the money, should get the benefit.

But there is merit in what you suggest. There are two teams on the pitch and providing the spectacle. I won’t split hairs about the percentages, but most leagues have separated into big boys and little boys since the gate-sharing was stopped.

  23. Mind that time all the wee clubs had a whip round to help Celtic out of a financial hole?

It’s an altruistic suggestion, but gate sharing is gone, never to return.

  24. I haven’t posted for the best part of a year, but I’m really in the mood now.

Re next season: one of my favourite sports quotes is from the 1968 Washington International post-race press conference:

American journalist: “When did you think you had the race won?”

    Lester: “About three months ago.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtCzut8FyGM

  25. However, since we have smart people of the blog right now, can you check my working on a wee sum that the SFA Licensing Committee will have to consider in a couple of weeks time?

T-1 represents the financial loss of last year

T-2 represents the financial loss of 2 years ago

    T-1 = £6,663k

    T-2 = £3,303k

    T-1 + T-2 = £9,966k

£9,966k converted to Euros (at BoE spot rate of 1.1282) is €11,244k

    €11,244k > €5,000k

Great result for my local team, Toronto FC in the CL last night … knocking the top Mexican team out in Mexico is not easy.
