Football the morning after the night before

844

We should commission a study into what happens to football teams immediately after a big game when they need to play a less illustrious opponent.  This week Kilmarnock got a better result against Celtic than Barcelona, and unlike the Catalans, Kilmarnock were away from home.

Cast your memory back five years for a better example.  Celtic beat Champions League holders, Milan, remarkably the only time the club have recorded a win against reigning champions, and met Gretna the following weekend, at Fir Park, Motherwell.  Gretna were promoted that summer but had cutbacks forced on them, as the financial gamble to promote them to the top flight.  Still, a James Grady free kick caught Artur Boruc on his heels.  It took goals from Chris Killen (remember him?) and Scott McDonald in the final three minutes to save face for Celtic.  Gretna failed towards the end of that season and were subsequently liquidated.

Celtic got the better of both Spartak Moscow and Benfica that season.

It must be said, your commentary is fantastic on the current subject matter.

I have my heart pounding every time I read a post you submit on this.

It goes without saying, keep up the Excellent work.

Barca deserved to win on Tuesday but by God the Almighty, we made them earn it. The effort to contain a team like that is unbelievable.

Celtic are rocking and we now have the breathing space to enjoy everything about being a Celtic Supporter.

I attribute no blame to anyone yesterday. Neil decided to give the armband to Kris (excellent man management once again) because he definitely didn’t deserve to miss the Barca game but it was purely tactical.

I hope we are suffering ******* disgusting Celtic performances after European games all the way through until May.

“The fans are being subjected to drivel at Celtic Park and having invested heavy cash are entitled to be entertained instead of watching boring, insipid garbage.”

We have played 5 home league games won 3, drew 1, and lost one, exactly the same ratio of outcomes as our 5 away league fixtures, though we have scored more away from home, just due to the distortion effect of the St. Mirren match.

Our away supporters do not seem to be as dissatisfied as the home support, either with the results or with the entertainment level. Maybe they are seeing a better team or performance, though the results evidence would not suggest this.

Or maybe they are enjoying it because the supporters who go to the away matches are more determined to enjoy and support the team. Sometimes it helps to make your own entertainment or at least contribute to it.

  5. Goodnight bhoys and ghirls, lots of fun posts tonight.

I liked your observation about KC and the captaincy, I wondered about that myself and thought it might’ve been a compensation or a go-prove-yourself; I also thought it hinted at SBs likely longevity / frequency of appearance over the next few years.

Can’t quite articulate why – the CCF video kind of touches on it – but I’m not sure Kris has Celtic in his heart…yet.

For my sins ,I subscribe to The Times and The Sunday Times. Since Graham Speirs left The Times, their reports on Scottish football have not been worth reading. The Sunday Times is even worse. Their Scottish football reporter is a fellow called Douglas Alexander. In the last two years I can only remember writing once about the Rangers Financial Chaos (R.F.C.) I think he would prefer to write standing on his head than quote anything from Alex Thomson. To-day he spent a whole page writing about Frank McAvennie and the’burds’ and the drink and the drugs. And that in a week when we had astonishing revelations about Scottish football on B.B.C.Scotland and Channel Four. It is true that ‘there are none so blind as those who will not see.

    johann,

The thing is we are not learning. The fans are being subjected to drivel at Celtic Park and having invested heavy cash are entitled to be entertained instead of watching boring, insipid garbage.

Are you writing Hugh Keevins’ columns? Having invested your cash (assuming from the word heavy that you have bought a season ticket), you’re entitled to a seat at Celtic Park to watch Celtic play football in the SPL against other SPL clubs, and against other teams as designated by your ticket. You’re not entitled to entertainment, or to guaranteed wins, or to any goals…etc.

Sorry to be a dick about it, but you pays your money you takes your chances. Yeah, you might expect Celtic to not lose to Kilmarnock in about 50 years, but every now and again you don’t get what you expect but you get to watch history.

Nothing wrong with the team selection yesterday IMO, if you are going with a tight squad.

We need to introduce a creative 10 to the mix. Someone who is uber confident on the ball and that means the most exquisite of first touches.

Johnny Park will struggle to get one of those Bad Bhoys as they are hard to find. I think he will get one though. ;)

    Very true, Tarrant.

Let’s not get involved in these Champion’s League ties.

Then we won’t suffer hangovers in our league games.

AND then the Boo Bhoys wont need to exercise their democratic right to demonstrate their disappointment at lacklustre performances.

    Simples really.

  17. I remember a few months ago watching a game on sky, can’t remember the game, but Neil McCann was a pundit, he was asked about an EBT, he gave a stock answer…….but………

He through a slip of the tongue I presume, said, I paraphrase, that we never got tested for performance enhancing drugs.

I wonder why he would mention performance enhancing drugs…….if they were never about, he would have had no need whatsoever to mention them. Mmmmmm

Writing Hugh Keevins columns? The facts are the crowds are declining because we are not playing good stuff domestically. They will continue to fall if there is not an improvement.Oh and its not now and again. We have only won just over half of our games, humped easily by Kilmarnock and St Johnstone and got a desperate draw against Ross County.Satisfactory?

I’m not blind to the reasons for ‘squad’ approach to modern day football – but broadly speaking, I’d always START with as close to my strongest team as possible. Win the game then bring guys on for testing out..?

  23. Of course it’s not good when we don’t win, we all react to a defeat in different ways, some throw the dummy oot the pram, others just accept it, it’s done and we can’t change it.

The manager can change things, Lenny has accepted responsibility, I’m sure we will see a very different performance on tuesday.

Are my green tinted spectacles of a deeper hue? I’ve not seen many people casting doubt on the penalty but I can’t see the contact that put the Killie player down.

  29. garygillespieshamstring on

Thinking back over the years back to mon days when we have rested players after big games, I have come to think that we should start the strongest team available and then use subs ASAP after we have got the game won.

  30. Tricoloured Ribbon

    “Satisfacory?”

    Yes, reasonably so.

Certainly compared to last year when we were so far behind and in danger of going out of the league race at 3:0 down to Killie, this is a big improvement.

Could it be better? Yes, but I accepted the deal that, in the absence of Sevco, it is highly likely that we will win this league regardless.

Now, as manager, I could go down the crowd pleasing route of playing a strong 11 in every home game to keep the 50k or so fans pleased with a diet of regular wins interspersed with occasional heavy wins.

Or I could go down the route, for the club’s long term benefit, of risking a few defeats or draws at home by fielding squad players and youngsters to accelerate their progress to the level of first team regulars and to allow some of the talent we need for Euro ties to rest and not be overplayed.

I can understand why changes were made against a team that had not won for 57 years at CP. Therefore, I am complicit, like the manager, in our defeat yesterday.

No-one likes accepting defeat but, sometimes it can be good for you.

Oh! and BTW, I can guarantee you that some of the people missing from our full capacity crowd are missing for other reasons such as financial difficulties, missing the huns, or thinking it does not much matter because we will win this league anyway.

Me, I count myself blessed that I am currently healthy and wealthy enough to afford to go and get a chance to see a good young Celtic team learn to play the game better.

A few, but not too many, setbacks seems a reasonable price to pay.

  31. canamalar

“Do you think people who boo the performance after the game should not attend Celtic park ?”

That is not my belief. I have to accept the democracy of other people’s rights.

But, I do feel entitled to tell them that what they are doing does not help. It is not constructive criticism nor is it motivating for players. I came close to booing Miku yesterday. Not for his play but for the slow speed of his departure because his behaviour then was harming the team. But he was no worse a player than any other outfield performer yesterday and I would not boo him for being off form

He actually looked quite promising as a sub against St. Mirren.
