Football the morning after the night before

844

We should commission a study into what happens to football teams immediately after a big game when they need to play a less illustrious opponent.  This week Kilmarnock got a better result against Celtic than Barcelona, and unlike the Catalans, Kilmarnock were away from home.

Cast your memory back five years for a better example.  Celtic beat Champions League holders, Milan, remarkably the only time the club have recorded a win against reigning champions, and met Gretna the following weekend, at Fir Park, Motherwell.  Gretna were promoted that summer but had cutbacks forced on them, as the financial gamble to promote them to the top flight.  Still, a James Grady free kick caught Artur Boruc on his heels.  It took goals from Chris Killen (remember him?) and Scott McDonald in the final three minutes to save face for Celtic.  Gretna failed towards the end of that season and were subsequently liquidated.

Celtic got the better of both Spartak Moscow and Benfica that season.

    Unew mike,

As I said, throughout his McStay, Danny was his right hand mhan.

Is it so hard to believe he learned a lot from Danny ?

  2. Mike, I often wonder too why Willie mcstay hasn’t went on to bigger and better things

    Fyi. It’s Neil

    Unew mike,

You can stop that for a start, some of the best debates I’ve seen on here have started with a misunderstanding :oD

    hail hail

  7. The ethos of the club’s inception is still valid as exemplified by the words, ” The Celtic Way. “

    Miki67,

The ethos myth is making people rich

The support have taken on the ethos, the club left that ethos lying up a close a long time ago.

That seems to be common at Bairds.

On the day Wim and Henke won us the league, Bairds was packed for the home game (so many of us couldn’t get tickets such was the success of wee Fergus’ efforts), the atmosphere was one of a massive party for the whole afternoon. Some pre-Sevco walked in, apparently to congratulate us. Quickly told where to go.

    They aren’t to be trusted.

Oh, and I also got a great snog from a lassie who drunkenly thought I looked like Rico Annoni.

  11. canamalar so to continue the debate so why did we lose 0-2 at home to kilmarnock ? Are all correct the pieces in place or is something still missing ?

    FFM,

    Unew mike,

I agree with Ma auld da, it was a jumpers on the park display

Turn up collect the points, relied on their reputation and no their skill.

    Top down

  14. Canamalar your da seems a wise man i’m sure he always did his homework do you think perhaps Neil and the players and coaches forgot to do their homework on kilmarnock

  15. Canamalar,

:)) Er, I think you’ll find it was you that dingied me last time at Oran Mor as you had a 1st Communion next day.

I accepted that excuse in good faith!

Not likely to be in the D Thurs nights for some time though am afraid, so no chance for you to “buy” me a free coffee. The guinness is still good there though so will let you know next time I’m in :)

One thing I will say disappointed me most, the lack of noise for the bhoys after the effort they put in during the week, that was the time to boost it was poor.

  17. Canamalar mags gave me copy of downfall last night says its a good read. I will get round to reading downfall once I have finished reading Gordon Strachan’s biography that I picked up in a second hand bookshop in Tokyo the other week. So I guess its ok to talk books but haven’t seen a movie for while

  18. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    FFM,

Naw, it was the dolphin and you never showed up, I’ve still got my cocktail stick, I’ll never forget the humiliation sitting there alone in a bar full of mhen all talking about football, and me with my best ball gown and having to tell they idiots they didn’t know what they were talking about, my opinion of how the club and team should behave is the only valid and righteous path and if they think different to me they should all just go fourth and multiply. Well guess what, my vision became reality sat on my own all night singing no surrender :oD)))))))

  19. I get what you mean re. the ethos and the club/support divergence. Shame.

I guess things will be different one day. I won’t live to see that. History is cyclical, though.

Greed cannot sustain itself for much longer. Sooner or later the whole rotten edifice will collapse in on itself.

Anyway….gotta sleep….my head says it’s an hour later than the clock. Yet another stupid idea.

  20. Canamalar

:)) Hard bunch there. Did you not boo them to voice your disapproval? I think I know what you mean now. I was just across the road :))

Are you the one that they keep upstairs??? :)))

  21. unew mike

Actually quite fancy a read at that.

Very clever (and decent) fella is oor GS I think.

But didn’t he publish it during his Celtic managment? If it had been after, I’d have taken a keen interest in his Celtic years.

  22. FFM yes he did publish it in 2007 during his celtic tenure. was indeed a very astute man WGS and signing Shunsuke Nakamura was one of the many many good things Gordon Strachan did for celtic

  23. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    Unew mike,

No read it, couldn’t tell you, looking forward reading it in about 20 years inshallah :o)

It’s happening right now, why the copulation would I want to blink :oD))))))

I was there when the flag went up, I was there when he said she said, I really don’t need a refresher at the moment, honest.

Now you, you’ve no been about much, so it has to be a good read, the best ‘Normally I don’t like to say I told you so Gloat but I told you so’ book a tim has ever written, I expect most subsequent gloatfest books to be improvements :o)

The best fun is, he told them so,

This blog has been telling them so for what is it 8 years now, and their own arrogance brought them here.

    Stupid Huns he he

  24. canamalar

as my good friend the Dumfries Doctor DBBIA is often want to say “whither the slithering hillbillies today” or words to that effect me I just wish that hector would hurry up and deliver the hammer blow that puts thems out of their misery

do you think minty will get the gaol ?

  25. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    FFM,

They keep me in the cellar, they force me to plat chess with grandmasters for money.

    Fish heads mmmmmmmmmm

  26. Canamalar,

    Gloatfests :)))

A few good men are entitled to publish such a title methinks :))

Lenny’s would sell a stack just on the revelation of what the sneaky one whispered in his ear.

  27. Canamalar

    I think I get that actually :))

Did you shine a spotlight on them and make them squeal??

    unew mike,

Can you translate? Am sure one of the lassies says ” It’s a mitre, it’s a mitre” They were always the best baws :))

  29. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    FFM,

Methinks when it’s all over, the Celtic support should dedicate the week most agree, was the most important in their downfall and declare it the gloatfest, in time we could develop it and make it a month to rival octoberfest.

I nominate November, why the rivalry, why not just continue the revelry instead :oD))))
