Football the morning after the night before

844

We should commission a study into what happens to football teams immediately after a big game when they need to play a less illustrious opponent.  This week Kilmarnock got a better result against Celtic than Barcelona, and unlike the Catalans, Kilmarnock were away from home.

Cast your memory back five years for a better example.  Celtic beat Champions League holders, Milan, remarkably the only time the club have recorded a win against reigning champions, and met Gretna the following weekend, at Fir Park, Motherwell.  Gretna were promoted that summer but had cutbacks forced on them, as the financial gamble to promote them to the top flight.  Still, a James Grady free kick caught Artur Boruc on his heels.  It took goals from Chris Killen (remember him?) and Scott McDonald in the final three minutes to save face for Celtic.  Gretna failed towards the end of that season and were subsequently liquidated.

Celtic got the better of both Spartak Moscow and Benfica that season.

Are you sure about both the claims you make here? I can’t say yay or nay to the first, but I know plenty of people who were confident we had the right man to succeed MON,but swiftly went off him.

Had he treated the fans with the same respect he accords us now, things may have been different.

    But he decided not to.

  5. Bobby I’m sure about the claims he went MENTAL behind closed doors. I know this as fact.

I know guys who called him a hun from the moment he arrived until he left.

I know guys who got pist at the fact he wasn’t going to allow heros like Sutton just to turn up for a rub down and go home instead of training.

But I do agree with you that he coulda been a bit less prickly with some of our support.

  6. Green says he wont play in the spl but he will stay until they

I don’t know either but Neil Lennon didn’t exclude himself from the blame.

Tony Watt didn’t start,(from your line up) and the heart of the midfield plan was completely changed at half time with the withdrawal of Beram Kayal.

Charlie Mulgrew’s a fine player, but not a central midfielder, Miku did not feature in the game up to his subsequent withdrawal either, though he never received a ball all afternoon, so may have been blameless.

Kris Commons seemed confused as to where he was deployed, and couldn’t stand up for falling down, and his take a touch wait for the tackle, fall routine was tedium.

Wee James Forrest should be made to stay behind after training and work on how to weight a pass, despite having provided the two best, passed up chances of the day.

Adam Matthews had a poor game by his high standards and contributed to the freaky opening goal along with Ambrose and Forster, to a lesser degree.

Neil Lennon knew there was no play maker, hence the early arrival of Paddy McCourt who tried and did more than most in a lesser period, substitutes Tony Watt and Gary Hooper missed sitters but either or both, with circumspection from the head coach might have been better starters.

Pity we could only turn the clock back an hour at the weekend even NL wishes it was more

Kilmarnock won the tactical battle with ten men behind the ball – got a break, simple three points, lost in a marathon.

    Morning!

    Ah – Latin!

Brings back a lot of ‘happy'(?!) memories of the auld school!

The old classics teacher was the late ‘big’ Jim McCutcheon who later became headmaster. A former Scottish schoolboy international who also coached the under 18 side which included a certain Luigi Macari – a wee ghuy from Largs. Whatever happened to him?

Anyway – the conversation with the auld fella from Catania went something like this:

    Cheats… b******s… liars… horse’s head in the bed…………..

    He wisnae happy!!!

“People like Gordon Strachan have learned much more about this club from being here and I think he definitely sees us as more than just a football club now.”

    That was Tommy Burns speaking.

WGS despised the laptop loyal and how they always quoted the opinions of so called Celtic fans. We on here constantly ridicule the callers to Clyde who are supposed to be ‘Celtic Fans’. His heart was not in the final season after losing Tommy, but he stayed on against his better judgement because as tommy said, he saw us as more than just a football club.

I have the utmost respect and admiration for WGS.

  15. Cant understand WGS bashing. We got some very important titles, which made the cheating escolate to a level where it was impossible to hide. He achieved getting through the group stages of the Champions League twice, only going out to a brilliant extra time goal from a world class player against AC Milan.

Under MON, we didnt have a squad. We had a great first 11. The subs were very poor. And a few even cost 1 or 2M. This cost us during our UEFA cup run. WGS built a squad for less. (Now, maybe the actual amounts would be equal, or WGS spent more, but in ‘real’ terms, ie taking into account inflation and what kind of player 5M got you during MON time, compared to WGS time, WGS spent less). We spent too much during the tenure of MON. The board decided that spending needed to be less, and who could argue with them now? And WGS built a squad, on the budget required, and that squad performed better than teams who had spent more money, in Europe.

What went wrong, was the last season. And I dont really blame WGS for that. That was an error of the board, imo. When it came to January, they didnt know whether to stick or twist. The squad could have done with some fresh players, certainly a striker, but, they didnt want WGS spending too much money, as he was going at the end of the season. (I can certainly see that point of view, but the short term, needed to be considered, as well as the long term). Anyway, like all wingers, who cant make up their minds wether to pass or shoot, they dithered on the ball, and did neither, resulting in the loss of the league. It’s crazy, the team knowing the manager is going at the end of the season, with all those games still to play. That’s why there were too many substandard performances, and I hope thats been learned. When its time to go, its time to go, and it needs to happen as quickly as possible, with the new guy in asap too. No more hanging around for ‘one more season’.

Saying WGS is better or was better than MON, or the other way around, for me, is too hard. They worked differently, but their targets, or more importantly weapons available to hit the targets were also different. I for one am just greatful we had both. And if Neil has learned something from them, wether its to copy something, or to make sure he doesnt do the same, he should be all the better, for having worked under 2 great managers, with very different styles. Hopefully he makes his own style, and turns out to be even better than, or achieves even more than MON and WGS. How great would that be……….!!

again and tell him where to go. Straight to hell.

  20. Posted this the other day but got lost, I work in Romania and was very kindly invited to Romania V Holland in the new national stadium n Bucharest, Romania got gubbed 4-1 but were robbed in some respects, just as they were 2-0 down they scored a great goal and had Holland on the ropes, but the referee gave a dubious penalty my comment to my Romanian friends was that it was a “big team” decion and that they would never have been awarded the penalty if it had been at the other end, the score is now 3-1 at half time, straight after half time Romania get a stone Waller turned down, my comment was as predicted ! If that was Holland they would have got the penalty, discussion after the game was about the ref and the UEFA mafia (which was chanted all game) the Romania attitude was that Holand deserved the victory but the referee was crap, imagine my shame when I got to work the next day and was told it was a Scotsman non other than Craig Thomson

I think we lost at the weekend due to focus. With our resources we should be better organised and focussed on each match. Neil has to delegate and keep the players on side who will miss out on such a large glamour match. The balance of who wants and needs rested needs to be better handled than just plain squad management through clever use of substitutions. Due to the qaulity within the sqaud it will be much harder for all involved. The idea of a team one and team two compared to a qaulity sqaud being rotated is what Lenny may be facing. I think he will have learned as much about his professional self this week than when he sacked his good friend Alan Thompson.

That he is given ZERO leeway having taken us to possible CL 2nd phase qaulification having been well beaten by Kilmarnock is an utter disgrace.

  22. When making a sales pitch – it should be; short and sharp – no open-ended statements that invite searching questions.

Green was given over an hour’s air-time to spout – the problem was the more he spoke the more he left his pitch riddled with holes.

The significant hole that BDO will be looking at will be his interpretation of what he paid for (assets) and his interpretation of the projected valuation in his prospectus.

Plenty of room for questions on how you get from; £5.5M to £30M to £80M!

This will be ongoing until the tapes of him come out from Mr Daly at the Beeb, so I would expect this is why he’s on a show like Talkspurt who will let him speak and never question his lunacy.

I would suspect he was wearing a black mask and carrying a swag bag while he was being interviewed, but as long as he’s churning out his pash then the Zombies will believe in him.
