Football the morning after the night before

844

We should commission a study into what happens to football teams immediately after a big game when they need to play a less illustrious opponent.  This week Kilmarnock got a better result against Celtic than Barcelona, and unlike the Catalans, Kilmarnock were away from home.

Cast your memory back five years for a better example.  Celtic beat Champions League holders, Milan, remarkably the only time the club have recorded a win against reigning champions, and met Gretna the following weekend, at Fir Park, Motherwell.  Gretna were promoted that summer but had cutbacks forced on them, as the financial gamble to promote them to the top flight.  Still, a James Grady free kick caught Artur Boruc on his heels.  It took goals from Chris Killen (remember him?) and Scott McDonald in the final three minutes to save face for Celtic.  Gretna failed towards the end of that season and were subsequently liquidated.

Celtic got the better of both Spartak Moscow and Benfica that season.

  1. Canamalar,

Hear hear fella, but you’ll need to descend from your chess lair for that :) Aye, and agreed, November is a good time to remind them why we’re revelling in the demise of their hypocrisy, even they we know they won’t get it. A very good choice of month :)

    anew mike,

Nite amigo. Get Mags back posting if you can as well !

    FFM,

A wee thought before I slip into the ether,

what kind of events would the Gloatfest hold

Monday – ask the question day

Tuesday – find the money day

    Wednesday – threaten questioner day

Thursday – threaten the investor day

Friday – change the law day

Oh there must be a month of event we could invent, just to bring in the tourists like :oD)))))

    Night Night n god bless.

  3. Canamalar,

Hah, I think the “threaten the investor day” and “change the law day” will be the ones we can predict with a ton of certainty.

Am looking past that myself for the tactics that will be deployed to deal with the Sevco Administration and the Flight of Chuckie :))))

Who needs film and music for entertainment??

    Gnite Amigo.

Itd be foolish to ignore how important a UK is to the USA. Theyve just played their trump card which they prepared for when SNP support looked threatening. Salmond being blinded by his looming success walked into it. As usual, the normal folk amongst us pay the price for the cockroach poltitics of govt and “law” enforcement. I’d recomend revolution but thats against the law. A “felony” probably.

  11. Sitting waiting for my flight in Glasgow this morning and next

thing Charles Green and some other guy sit next to me.

Anyway they chat about general stuff and then get onto

tax money Hearts owe, so Green starts saying they should

Highlight this as it undermines what they are trying to do

So the other guy says, best thing we can do is call Jim Traynor

And get him o highlight it…

So watch out for another Jabba scoop soon.

  12. Morning,

I like this from The Independent.

Long ago, back when Ally McCoist

was a cheeky contestant on a

weekly sports quiz show and the

world had not heard of Craig Whyte,

let alone his inability to run a

football club within its means, there

probably was no need for Sky Sports

    4.

Back in days of yore, football fans

would have been happy with, for

    example, yesterday’s showing of the

    Merseyside derby or Chelsea v

    Manchester United for their Sunday

afternoon fix. And if you supported a

top-flight club with a large fan base,

if your team wasn’t on TV one week,

it wouldn’t be long before it would

    be showcased.

    But that was before Rangers’

    spectacular implosion and plummet

down to the Scottish Third Division.

But just because the club had fallen

    down a metaphorical mineshaft, it

    didn’t mean the hundreds of

thousands of fans were happy to

peer over the edge of the hole and

shout down to see if they were OK. A

good proportion leapt down with the

    Glasgow club, along with McCoist.

And yesterday, they got a chance to

show the world the new incarnation

of the Glasgow derby. Against Clyde,

    whose last eight fixtures against

    Rangers had been as cannon-fodder

    in cup games.

And here was the problem. Rangers

looked just like Rangers at first

glance – they were clad in blue and

Dean Shiels’ goal which helped them

towards their first away win in their

new league was a peach – but, even

with the slick Sky production, it had

the air of a first-round FA Cup game,

in terms of quality on the pitch and

    in the studio at half-time.

The on-field skill level was typified

both by the Clyde forward Stefan

    McCluskey’s skewed shot that should

have been an easy equaliser just

    before half-time and the clumsy

scuffle which led to John Neill’s red

card. And the half-time punditry was

    similarly elementary. It only took

two minutes for Neil McCann, a

    former player at Ibrox turned

pundit, to utter the phrase “at any

level of football, that is poor” – as if

we had forgotten that Rangers were

now slumming it – when speaking

    about his old club.

It was frustrating to watch. This was

not a battle between two plucky

underdogs eager for a big club in

their next tie – something that makes

    the lowest-ranked teams watchable

in a cup match – this was two sides

scrapping for survival. But the likes

of Whyte, Peter Ridsdale or any

    other chairman who has aspirations

to spend money they don’t have in

order to live the dream should be

forced to watch a game like this. So

when the bean counters try to count

beans that don’t exist and set forth

the chain of dominoes that can bring

a club to its knees, they know what

will ensue. But they should also

remember the fall of a club doesn’t

mean the support will also vaporise.

They will still demand to see their

club. And that is why we now need

    channels like Sky Sports 4.

  13. brnobhoy 07:34:

I sometimes wonder about people that speak at airports etc. about how the world is against them and who did what to who and what they are going to others. Do you think they do it deliberately to get things out there?

I do not doubt that what you heard but just wondering.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  14. Fresh, Chilled Morning in the Chilterns…

Missed the Glasgow Derby yesterday, a classic by all accounts.

I’ve been quite a fan of Lenny’s experimentations in the SPL games, the tactic has proven itself in the BIG games, a 180^ turnaround on Rookie NL’s record.

Not taking advantage of the void in SPL competition would be remiss, however a 50 year + record disappearing is sore.

    Still onwards and upwards Celtic…

Hurricane Sandy, once it has finished with the eastern coast of the USA, will likely take the same course as its many predecessors and swing up past Nova Scotia and Greenland, sweep round towards Iceland, and head across the Atlantic, passing Scotland in 3 or 4 days time.

Seems like the perfect time to barge-tow the hull section of HMS Queen Elizabeth through the Minch, round Cape Wrath and down to Rosyth.

I expect someone at BAE neglected to give ol’ Jobo a call.

  16. The Battered Bunnet on

Following Paul’s scoop on Friday afternoon, revealing Sevco’s advanced plans to sell the stadium and training ground and lease the property back at x4 the going rate for commmercial property, I had a busy weekend poring over the weekend papers.

The extensive analyses of the impacts on the future prospects for the football club, describing the motivation and probable identity of the people behind the proposal, and the long term financial straightjacket placed on the club following such a deal being concluded, was all quite remarkable.

Remarkable in the sense that not a single newspaper mentioned the story.

    Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

  18. Paul67: I read an article in Playboy magazine many years ago (see mum I DID have it for the articles!) about the “bounce factor” in sports betting. The article related to American football (though a wee gander at t’internet seems like it originated in horse racing) wherein a team that significantly outperforms in one game often underperforms the next.

It’s not so much the lactic acid build up in the legs (not “lactose” as the Scotsman wrote) but more about the players, indeed the whole team, psychologically reaching a high they can’t maintain. It’s not even complacency, the team tries to maintain their level but they just can’t get back into that zone…

It’s stuck in my mind for 30-odd years, and whilst it’s not foolproof (i’m the fool that proved that), it seems right more often than not….

  19. Marrakesh Express on

I couldnt believe my ears..listening to Nicky Campbell on 5 live this morning and they wheel out Jeff Wynter to discuss the Mark Clattenburg player abuse claim. After Wynter went on a rant backing up the ref, Campbell nailed him on his anti-Catholic statements and as you’d expect, the bigot squirmed out of it.

You have to wonder who sanctioned this guy appearing on the show.

  20. TBB

You would have thought at least one msm outlet would have thought to inform their readership of one more yoke being placed around The Rangers financial neck.

Watching Everton v Liverpool yesterday I thought both Naithsmith and Jelavic did not look out of place at that level.

Two good examples of the kind of player that Rangers could really not afford to have in their team without the twin benefits that debt and ebts provided. (Although these two may not have had ebts the tax saved on others who did helped sustain their wage.)

I wonder what steps the SFA are taking to ensure that The Rangers, with ambitions that way exceed their income and cost base, do not indulge in the same financial skullduggery and accounting thereof that allowed them to kill themselves and seriously wound Scottish football in the process.

What additional muzzles are being put in place to ensure once bitten our game is not bitten by the same dog again?

  21. Been away for a while. Someone mentioned something about Craig Whyte having recorded some Duff and Phelps conversations about the Ticketus deal. Anyone know anything about this?

    JJ

  22. Jocky Bhoy

I, too , am aware of that theory (I think I read it in Mayfair or Escort 0:-) )and agree with it. I am sure many of us have experienced games in which we have played where we knew we were far superior to our opponent (s) but, try as we might, we simply could not raise our game on the day to its normal level.

    JJ

  23. The Battered Bunnet on

    JJ

Yip, he’s got David Grier of D&P on tape admitting they knew the details fo the deal, and suggesting Whyte signs off on a press release firmly denying it. Grier then phones Media House to get them up to speed. You’ll get the details on the BBC site.

So D&P knew about the Ticketus deal prior to Whyte’s takeover.

They then accepted the Admins appointment and refused the creditor claim of Ticketus.

If it transpires that Sevco’s shareholders comprise Ticketus investors looking to get their money back, D&P as Admins having sold the assets to them, there will be all manner of trouble tumbling about their heads.

They’re up in fromt of Lord Hodge on Wednesday to get his approval to hand the Liquidation over to BDO. Hodge is on record as stating that he would not conclude the Administration without satisfying himself on the matter of D&P’s conflicting interests.

Ought to be an interesting wee session that.
