Football the morning after the night before

844

We should commission a study into what happens to football teams immediately after a big game when they need to play a less illustrious opponent.  This week Kilmarnock got a better result against Celtic than Barcelona, and unlike the Catalans, Kilmarnock were away from home.

Cast your memory back five years for a better example.  Celtic beat Champions League holders, Milan, remarkably the only time the club have recorded a win against reigning champions, and met Gretna the following weekend, at Fir Park, Motherwell.  Gretna were promoted that summer but had cutbacks forced on them, as the financial gamble to promote them to the top flight.  Still, a James Grady free kick caught Artur Boruc on his heels.  It took goals from Chris Killen (remember him?) and Scott McDonald in the final three minutes to save face for Celtic.  Gretna failed towards the end of that season and were subsequently liquidated.

Celtic got the better of both Spartak Moscow and Benfica that season.

“So you vent during the game, you think your protestations are reasonable someone near you thinks your being unreasonable”

I admitted that to show I was aware of human nature, but I tried, and obviously failed, to make it clear that I was not doing so volubly. I was restraining my annoyance, I was biting my lip, I was smothering my frustration. But only when a Celtic player was the cause.

I gave full rip to my emotions when the ref messes up or an opponent fouls. I see that as my role, as a Celtic supporter, to intimidate the officials into playing fair and to show the opposition fans that I am unbowed. I do this because I think it helps Celtic not because I want to work out my frustrations. I can get therapy for free from the Samaritans without paying Season Book money.

The fan that wants to work out through venting can do so by exploding at the officials or the opposition. Why be a supporter who chooses to pick on Celtic to vent?

  2. Was at the game yesterday and was disappointed, but not so badly as to boo.

I think that I am ambivalent about defeat when the Huns are not in the SPL.

This is probably because of a lifetime watching Celtic get beaten when they play badly (as they did yesterday) and Rangers capitalising on our loss by winning when they play badly due to the extra men they have on the park (the officials).

So the game has changed for me as it will be so much harder for the MIBs to deny us to the benefit of Rangers as they have in the past.

    SFTB,

What I said to Geordie about Sammi eg. Generally you can tell how the weeks went gauging how much vitriol is spouted at the seasons chosen target.

That spoils the game more for me than a few scunnered malcontents having the last say.

  4. I have great difficulty with the idea of any Celtic SUPPORTER booing his team ?

    I just don’t GET IT.

Some seem to be saying that you paid your money so you have the right to boo,

OK. So I pay good money to watch Andy Murray at Wimbledon, or Rory McIlroy at St. Andrew’s, & they have a bad day.

Does that entitle me to start booing ?

    Of course not.

So why do we feel it is alright to go to watch the team we profess to love & start booing them if they have an off day.

What exactly is that going to achieve ?

    Am I missing something ?

  7. ” I think that I am ambivalent about defeat when the Huns are not in the SPL”

To an extent I think I am too neebs.

  8. konnichiwa paul, canamalar, and SFTB met mags mcgill in tokyo last night and we both agree that he who pays is hard earned dosh is entitled to vent his frustration. I can accept the booing of a poor performance but i do agree with the vitriolic targeting of individual players

The more important question is why did celtic appoint danny mcgrain as first team coach

The Celtic team of Niel Lennon still lacks a tactical nous

danny mgrain is a wonderful servant and ambassador for the club and was a fanatastic defender in his heyday but in all honesty

even respecting all of danny mgrain’s passion, committment and defensive excellence he is not young enough to be entrusted with the day to day first team coaching activities

Why was celtic’s most successful youth team coach for more than a generation willie mcstay moved out of the parkhead revolving door as Neil Lennon engineered and plotted his way to his current position

I can only wonder what this team that Niel Lennon and John Park are building would acheive if willie mcstay was still in place

Neil has done well but he still has much to learn and may not be the Irish messiash that people would have us beleive

Celtic’s most successful manager since Jock Stein Gordon Strachan loves our club and Gordon Strachan’s mentor mentor was tommy burns who instilled the love of celtic that Gordon Strachan still retains for celtic

Neil lennon would do well to find a suitable mentor and an appropriate first team tactician

coaching is a team effort and willie mcstay is the missing tactical nous with willie mcstay ingredients then yesterday’s relapse will become as rare as hens teeth

it takes a man to admit he made a mistake

and it takes an even better man to made amends by handing out an olive branch to the person he scuttled as he selfishly pursued his own ambition

go on neil lennon swallow your pride and appoint willie mcstay as first team coach then i will finally believe without question that you are the right man for the job of managing celtic

right now i want to believe in Neil Lennon he has my support ad respect but I still have a question at the back of my mind

if neil lennon can answer those nagging questions at the back of my mind then he will earn my trust as custodian of Celtic

no one man is bigger than the club

celtic is a family and a team of many members working together for a common purpose

“To play football the Glasgow Celtic Way”

    Hail Hail

  9. canamalar

It still begs the question why vent at Celtic?

Why not vent about our enemies as a way of working off frustration?

And, in reference to being right about Sammi. I would ask people to consider whether Miku will be next year’s Sammi. It’s a possibility. He is not without ability- a Venezuelan International with good quick feet who is tidy in link up play, though not yet a great threat to PL goalies. We could lose the benefits of his improvement if he takes it elsewhere because we selected him for the role of scapegoat.

I’ve seen good talented players fail to thrive at Celtic- (Juninho, George Connelly, Shay Given) for a variety of reasons. I’ve also seen players who were abused by the support achieve great things.

Just ask Bobby Lennox about the auld guys in the then Celtic support who assured him, in the early 60s, that he’d “never be a player!”

  10. Mike,

I’m not sure if anyone has actually questioned their entitlement.

I think the question is more about the point.

  11. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    SFTB,

Good for you, your a great example, I try my best to imitate your behaviour, depending on the week I’ve had, I can expect to fluctuate between as good as you or as bad as a Sammi hater, note never booed the team, I’m no you and there are another lots and lots of people who are no you, they don’t have the same as you. I refuse to judge them or give them a guilt complex, I’m a sinner too there seems to be too many perfect judges in the Celtic support.

Maybe ambivalent is too strong but I can be more philosophical in my disappointment when I know that they are in the fourth tier.

    In the Irn Bru league.

That has a nice ring don’t you think?

Good to see you back and what a bang,

Why didn’t you ask this after the game yesterday

Could have save a whole lot of self righteous drivel :oD)))))

Excellent proposition, except I’d be more inclined to give Danny a bit more respect,

Throughout the Wullie reign there was one constant, who was that constant ?

  16. Nan,

    Oh aye. Certainly does

Brings me back to the comment…I’d rather watch my team lose to a last minute jordi alba goal than being beat on BBC alba :)

    Seanandliam..,

Non whatsoever from what I’ve seen of their play and the scouting teams success, I’m ok for now :o)

  18. canamalar

“Good for you, your a great example,”

No, I am far from it. I am in awe of the people who support better than me. The good singers, the humorists, and the guys who start the chanting and get others to join in.

Every one in the Green Brigade is better than me. Everyone with a good singing voice who joins in the songs is better than me.

I just do the one easy humble thing that I can without possessing those virtues. I try to support rather than undermine the team. I fail at times but I don’t blame anyone else but myself for that failure.

I am not a happy bunny in all aspects of life. I am no Polyanna. I am a sceptical Scot and my only claim for praise here is that I’ve worked out that it helps Celtic if I try to encourage the players.

  19. canamalar here’s another bang why does celtic quicknews turn me off and chase away respected posters…….

    What utter rubbish.

Jim Traynor could have written that, that’s how far off track you are. ‘Naive, manipulating, needs a mentor blah blah’. Rehashing old non stories and hanging it on Willie McStay not being there.

Hope you don’t post if we start doing badly. Not sure I could take it.

  24. More than a football club. It was founded for a reason on specific principles. If all that is seen within Celtic is a football game……..

  25. stringer good morning from Tokyo have a good day Jim Traynor I am not Celtic Football supporter and Niel Lennon supporter I am indeed as i said neil lennon has my support and respect

i just wanted to ask a perfectly legitimate question that has been gnawing at the back of my mind

a concerted team effort achieves great things

    hail hail

  26. unew mike

I do not want to re-confirm my e-mail on here. Happy to have it forwarded via Paul or any mutual acquaintance.

As for Willie McStay, I do not know enough about the backroom workings to know if he would be better for us than Danny McGrain. Willie worked well with the reserves and with Sligo but did not seem to do anything special at Ujpest.

Do you have anything to suggest why he would be a help or why Neil’s tactical nous is any less than Pep Guardiola who won the CL in his 2nd and 4th (his 1st and 3rd seasons with Barca A) years in senior management.

A manager’s tactical ability is hard to judge, just by watching the evidence of a game. There are too many variables, outside the tactics, that lead to things being different from what the manager intended. Unless you are privy to his training methods, his managerial preparations and his team talks, you will reach an uninformed judgement.

Not sure what point you are making about the Irish and extremism but it is not coming across well.

  33. sftb i will recheck my mail box just thought you might have one of my previous mails still in your own inbox

as for the willie mcstay question he did wonders at the reserves did he not win 7/8 leagues in a row and was knocking on the door of first team coaching responsibilities

he hit the ground running at upjest in Hungary but after few months he and many first team players did not receive wages and upjest ran into serious financial difficulties

certainly if niel danny mcgrain and johan mjallby continue to progress i will not be too proud to come on and swallow my own olive branch and say sorry

just asking what I felt was a legitimate/valid question like
