Football the morning after the night before

844

We should commission a study into what happens to football teams immediately after a big game when they need to play a less illustrious opponent.  This week Kilmarnock got a better result against Celtic than Barcelona, and unlike the Catalans, Kilmarnock were away from home.

Cast your memory back five years for a better example.  Celtic beat Champions League holders, Milan, remarkably the only time the club have recorded a win against reigning champions, and met Gretna the following weekend, at Fir Park, Motherwell.  Gretna were promoted that summer but had cutbacks forced on them, as the financial gamble to promote them to the top flight.  Still, a James Grady free kick caught Artur Boruc on his heels.  It took goals from Chris Killen (remember him?) and Scott McDonald in the final three minutes to save face for Celtic.  Gretna failed towards the end of that season and were subsequently liquidated.

Celtic got the better of both Spartak Moscow and Benfica that season.

Only first sentence was for you :)) sorry if it looked otherwise.

TET, I’m glad it’s not just me. I’d have been astonished and slightly embarrassed if we got a call like that our end even though I’d have been shouting for it the instant it happened.

Leftclickcfc, the enthusiasm of the ref was noted even among those who conceded it was a penalty. No worries.

For me the bottom line is,

Right now, many supporters are not having a good time personally

They go to Celtic park to escape their woes

A crap week with money problems

People making unreasonable demands :o) on them at work.

    At work

20 people made redundant, everyone who thought they got lucky keeping their job are expected to pick up the slack, easily replaced.

    At home

Got made redundant, find a job, find a job, kids still have expectations, wife’s a pessimist and the world is coming to an end, stress like never before.

    At work

    See above.

What a wee relief the euro game was, escape from all the worlds problems even though we got beat we watched them give 100%.

What a reminder yesterday’s game was, the worlds no perfect and we watched them no give 100%

Many many times I’ve said on here, I don’t know my neighbours problems and if my neighbour can get a bit of relief belting out his frustration and roaring on his support, good for him/her.

The only difference it makes to me is, I know if he’s had a good or bad week leading up to the game.

I reported I had to help a 75 year old mhan to his feet at Hamden no long ago because real scum decided his protest was going to make fellow Celtic supporters suffer violently, using the same two bob psychology that individual has not had a good week nor a good life and is in dire need of help. But that is the only time I’d tell someone no to come back, that is unacceptable.

Boo ffs, it’s an emotional outburst, there’s no many places left where you can squeal derision or roar approval.

  5. Just before I go, a wee thought or prayer to all on the east coast of the US, who are expecting a hurricane any time soon. Remember we are all family. Stay safe you lot.

I actually thought the ref was better than normal yesterday.

This in the main was due, imo, to the Killie players not resorting to kicking us all over the park, they did on ocassion have a few that unbecoming of a proper footballer, but in general they were better than most who play us were.

But you could see the ref was itching to give them everything he could, they can’t help it, it’s in their genes.

I thank them for it at the end of the day, if not for having to play against 11 playesr + the officials evey week, we might just not so good as we are :>)))))…..Aye right…

  7. Robert, “that is all” as in that is all you want to say.

    Or

“that is all” as in not even yer kids, wife or family get any love from ye? Lol

  8. Exiled tim – dufc, afc, cfc all in semi finals….. Maybe…. Its like the 80’s again.

Hopefully there will be no sevconians… But if we have to beat sevco to win it, so be it…..

  9. Time for bed, it’s really an hour later than it is, up in a few hours, off to Alicante, 3 hour drive.

No see the grandweans for a few months, sad so it is.

    Anyways.

    Goodnight and god bless Timland

  10. I have never ever ever booed my team.

People who do need to look up the definition of a ‘supporter’ and then look up the definition of ‘oxymoron’

  11. Silver City 1888 on

I was wondering if we’d have been so lacklustre yesterday if we had a serious contender in the League, even if it took a little official assistance to make their challenge serious.

  12. garygillespieshamstring on

I like the term “sevconian”. It is diametrically opposed to “Corinthian” in spirit. A big well done to whoever was first to coin that one.

  13. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    estoril..,

I’ve never booed my team either, that’s my point.

  14. canamalar

    I am no saint.

I have many emotional outbursts following Celtic. I get frustrated at bad passes, poor decisions, and players who dive, or are greedy and self-centred.

Sit next to me at CP and you’ll hear bad language, over emotional vents, and poor quality singing and support. It’s not about emotion or lack of it. I want Celtic to win more than I want me to vent. I can let off steam about my crap week elsewhere.

To be honest, the booing was not that bad yesterday. 2 eejits in Section 439 were a bit loud and annoying during the match and continued it afterwards. Most in our section treated them with good humoured disbelief. Not one person nearby backed them and more were singing songs in support to their annoyance.

If my experience was repeated throughout the ground, we are talking of less than 100 people booing at the end. Still don’t agree with them but voting to leave earlier than usual also speaks of a problem about lack of passion.

As I said, some among us are missing the tension and competitiveness of the hun being in our league. It is going to be fascinating to see what our attendances will be like if we ever establish a healthy lead over our current SPL rivals.

Maybe PL can see some profit in keeping the league tight and interesting :-)

  15. garygillespieshamstring on

Silver city : I sure hope you are wrong with that one. It is exactly what Keevins and the laptop loyal would want us to think. Another reason why getting sevco straight to spl is necessary in their eyes.

  16. Garyg.

When someone proves conclusively to me that booing ‘works’ I might try it.

But I did get a bit irked at mikus lazy walk off. Nothing to do with his performance. More because being a positive kinda guy I still though we had time left to get somert from the game.

  17. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    SFTB,

The people I’m talking about don’t care what PL thinks is best, they are looking for escape, something to brag about, boost to expectations, it’s no the same people every week, I suppose confession would be my analogy, go in vent and come out feeling some relief.

Competing out feeling worse than going in is rubbish and depending on how it felt going in, sometimes you just have to scream at the world.

Now booing an individual like they did to WGS that just no nice.

That did get me doing my nut also. I don’t know if he had an injury but even if he did he could have got off the pitch faster. It is probably a Spanish League thing.

  19. Pete, everybody gets one chance;)

My only grumble about yesterday was I thought the south American shoulda been partnered with another ‘out and out’ striker.

  20. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    Geordie…,

Yer really no following this conversation, are you ?

It’s no the same people every week, it depends on the week the individual has had.

And the best and pretty much the only place left to do that is at the game.

Some chose a target, e.g. Sammi, good week goes easy on him, bad week he gets dogs abuse for 90 mins.

    Thats that individuals vent.

All I’m saying is if you need to be entertained, football isn’t the best medicine.

I know this isn’t part of your point but as far as moaners go, yes it.is the same voices week in week out that sit near to me.

  22. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    SFTB,

So you vent during the game, you think your protestations are reasonable someone near you thinks your being unreasonable

Opinions at a game of football, to boo or to call a player a diddy that is the question :o)

  23. Evening fholks.

    Petec,

Thanks for the thoughts last night – will email back to you – trying to catch up here today.

    Which reminds me.

    Canamalar,

If you try to get me a coffee I’d be booing you myself – especially as they give it free to the non-drinkers in the D in my experience !

  24. canamalar

“It’s no the same people every week, it depends on the week the individual has had.”

    I think that’s a contentious view.

The guy behind me at Celtic Park IS routinely negative. Seriously, when Celtic play well, his face is contorted into a rictus as a smile tries vainly to compete with his default apoplexy. I’ve never, and I mean, never, not once, without any hint of exaggeration, heard him utter one word of encouragement or sing or clap. He does, join in with the backs to the pitch “huddle” but he does not seem to enjoy it.

Now the critical supporters come in all shapes and sizes just like the happyclappers but, from the noises made by other CQNrs. elsewhere in the stadium, there’s grumpy supporters all over the place.

I do not meet as many of them at away games and the away support should be subject to the same vagaries of good and bad weeks as the rest of us. I think it’s more to do with temperament and values.

  25. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    Geordie,

Had the same problem with Sammi, when they vocalised their disgust, I vocalised my support for the big man, louder than them.

Right now, how smug am I in the same company :oD))))))

But, like everyone else on here Except kilbowie kelt there are players who grind my gears and raise my emotions enough to vocally protest at perceived incompetence :o)

We were just flat because of the Barca game, if we were beat by 5 goals we would have battered Killie IMO.

Re-posting this youtube after a long time as it is monumental IMO and even though the constructor has since died the content is incredible.

Hey, don’t get me wrong I regularly ffs at players. Commons and Forrest are my usual targets but only cos I feel they can do so much more when we don’t have the ball.

And only when they are out of earshot ;)
