Forrest and Bitton steal the show as Celtic go down

567

Bayern Munich left Glasgow with three points, but that was two more than they deserved. The game was decided on a 22nd minute lapse. Dedryk Boyata should have headed but allowed the ball to bounce behind him. This is the kind of mistake which primary school kids are shouted out for.  From that moment, Coman was clear through on Craig Gordon, who made the mistake of coming out of his box in the vain hope of reaching the ball before the French international striker.  That aside, Celtic were excellent and deserved a point for their efforts.

As  with the corresponding game in Munich, this was a game for James Forrest, not Patrick Roberts, so I was pleased Brendan Rodgers’ hand was forced with the injury to Patrick.  James was outstanding.  He regularly drew three defenders, kept his head up in possession, and created the chance which allowed Callum McGregor to convert.

Watch James again at the goal.  He played the magicians’ trick: “Look over here, watch me.”  Every Bayern Munich player was focused on him before he pulled a rabbit out of the hat, it was a thing of beauty.  Wing play is difficult, although it seems it is more difficult for some to understand it, than it is to play there.  I enjoyed watching Arjen Robben, but James was the more productive winger last night.

Screeds have been written about a momentary lapse by Nir Bitton at Firhill, which cost Celtic nothing.  Last night, under the most intense pressure, the player grew in stature in the central defensive position.  I heard “What are you doing?” as he chased down a loose ball in the Bayern right back position a moment before the Celtic goal, but without that, or his build-up play which led to the goal, we would not have drawn level.

It is also worth recording that Celtic still had the option to make a substitution when Nir received a head injury which resulted in several minutes treatment and the application of a substantial bandage.  If his appetite for a scrap was in question (you know what I mean), he would have left the field at that moment.

I was getting frustrated for Callum McGregor, who constantly showed for the ball, but in the central role he started the game, seldom received it.  It was a brave move for Brendan to hook Scott Sinclair and push Callum wide, although Scott was clearly below his best, but this change was pivotal in getting Celtic level.  The aforementioned build up play from Bitton, the run and delicious dink from Forrest, cut Bayern open.  In true Halloween fashion, Callum wasted no time in burying ghosts of past German encounters.

Scott Brown was imperious, while Stuart Armstrong will still be replaying his early chance to open the scoring over in his mind, he can be satisfied with his performance.  Lustig and Tierney put in mature and energetic efforts.

Moussa Dembele had little scope to shine; an early left foot effort which he didn’t connect with cleanly was the sum total of his genuine opportunities.  Celtic wisely put numbers in defence and midfield, leaving the striker isolated.

A word about Dedryk.  He dropped on his knee on the final whistle, no doubt feeling the pain of his earlier mistake.  You and I have been watching football long enough to know this is part of the game.  Big Billy shared a couple of similar memories with me, which he carried like old wounds.  Dedryk has recovered from darker places during his time at Celtic and can use the hurt from last night against PSG, and when his countrymen visit on match day 6.  It was an infuriating moment, but he is a player unrecognisable from the Dedryk we lamented in Molde.

There is so much to be positive about.  On similar form, we will destroy Anderlecht and no one will fancy coming to Celtic Park in the Europa League.  So what do you have to worry about?  We’ll talk about that tomorrow.

  1. BQN Presents Updates from Game 7 World Series

69 Degrees in La La Land for Game 7 about to begin.

It’s been a see saw back and forth series but LA come into tonight’s game slightly favored.

This would be Houston Astros’ first title, while Dodgers have won 5 titles since they moved to LA as well as one from their previous home in Brooklyn.

Both sides were exceptional in the long season and the first 6 games have been sensational.

Both sets of pitchers have had difficult games and arms will be tiring, but in this game all pitchers will be ready and willing to to give their all.

  2. ALMORE

Being in the USA i watch Celtic tv on my laptop and usually posted updates during the game on iPhone.

I have now given up as it is virtually impossible even though i use adblocker.

It constantly freezes or loses posts or refuses to post.

Having lived outwit Scotland for many years i was always desperate for any news about Celtic so this was the reason o posted game updates.

Some people on here might like that i don’t though;-))

  3. Fanatic

I watch on a desktop with a big screen and post updates on my iPad, which explains the tendency to type an X instead of a C.

I have NeverAds and it seems to screen all the ads with no hassle.

The more posting updates the better as different perspectives are always good and adds to the atmosphere of a virtual supporters’ club.

It does get a wee bit confusing at times when posters are at different parts of the game with streams lagging.

    All adds to the fun.

I only have a laptop and iPhone at home.

Iphone with adblocker used to work fine but last month it has become impossible.

I enjoyed the differing opinions posted on here during games but recently anything that does not follow party lines gets a torrent of abuse.

There seems to be a growing group of uber Tims on here who gang up on anyone who posts something they disagree with..Snide posts and insults are often their response to anyone with a differing opinion.

There is also a notable tactic of them ascribing words people did not say to suit their agenda.

I have been on this site for many years and disagreed with many but most debates remained civil.

This unfortunately seems to be increasingly rare on here.

Was very pleased with last nights performance as i felt it was first time in a few seasons we looked good enough to compete at the top table.

Creditors of oldco Rangers are to be offered less than 4p in the pound, while the liquidators and big law firms have been paid more than £12million, the Daily Record can reveal.

Calling it “an insult”, one small creditor said last night: “It is a feeding frenzy for lawyers and accountants while the small creditors get a tiny fraction of what they are owed, and it has still not been paid.”

Legal firms have already received about £9.2million, while the rolling bill for liquidators BDO stands at £3.4million.

The financial meltdown of the Ibrox club in 2012 – with debts of £134million – has sparked a frenzy of legal actions.

Documents seen by the Record show that unsecured creditors of oldco have been told they may get an “interim dividend” of 3.91p in the pound.

But that is in stark contrast with BDO, the company charged with processing oldco’s assets, who up to June of this year have earned fees of £3,386,000.

And unlike the unsecured creditors, the big lawyers have already been paid.

London lawyers Stephenson Harwood have received fees of £7,080,329 and outlays of £646,198.

Edinburgh-based Brodies solicitors got fees of £1,307,415 and outlays of £114,367.

Another legal firm, Levy and McRae , have had £54,074 along with £10,515 in outlays, while Clyde and Co have been paid £49,500.

The “interim dividend” payments to unsecured creditors mean they can expect scant reward.

The small creditor said: “We have waited more than five years and we’ll probably have to wait even longer to get anything.

The Milngavie Mini Market is owed money

“There are still fairly big issues to be resolved. There’s been no sign of any money being handed over.

“For small creditors to see £10million being paid out to the big firms while we get less then 4p in the pound, it is a case of the small guy being duffed up once again.

“The word interim suggests there might be something else further down the line but we just don’t know.”

BDO successfully sued ex-chairman Craig Whyte ’s former law firm Collyer Bristow for £24million.

Around £5.4million of the fee paid to Stephenson Harwood relates to the Collyer Bristow litigation. They have also launched a legal action for £29million against Paul Clark and David Whitehouse, of administrators Duff & Phelps.

The essence of the action is that oldco’s assets were sold too cheaply to Charles Green’s consortium in 2012. Duff & Phelps are defending the action.
