Frustrations for what could have been

779

There are frustrations for what could have been.  Leipzig did not have us under great pressure at any time in the game, but concentration dropped for three minutes, which settled the outcome.

I initially blamed Dedryck for the opening goal, but on second viewing, the incident was more nuanced.  Eboue Kouassi almost got a touch on the ball, meaning Dedryck waited on the second ball instead of attacking the cross.  Eboue himself only reacted when the Leipzig attacker nearest the right wing failed to get a touch on the ball.

Cristian Gamboa went to ground and didn’t get near the ball for the cross leading to the second goal.  Unforgiveable, but we are parachuting a player into a high level of football when his annual game time is measured in dozens of minutes.

Despite defeats in Germany and Austria, Celtic are not out of contention.  Leipzig are nowhere near as good as Salzburg.  We have beaten better teams than them at a packed Celtic Park.  Get a win next time out, or even a draw, and the remaining fixtures favour us.

By the time we go to Trondheim, Rosenborg will be out of the tournament.  Salzburg end the group at Celtic Park, when they will have already have top spot confirmed, and want to avoid injuries, suspensions and hopefully be keen to give experience to squad players.

I have spoken highly of Jozo for years, but the sight of him leaving the field on a stretcher after going down holding his ankle confirmed any remaining doubt about how appropriate his physical frame is for competitive sport.

Was Brendan resting players with an eye on Sunday?  It looks like it.  Mikael made an appearance from the bench, while Filip Benkovic was also fit enough for the bench.  If these two only have one game in them this week, the semi-final at Murrayfield is the wise choice.

Re ‘proper’ defenders’. Bravery comes near the top of the list . The Ciellini’s don’t turn their back , close their eyes and whimper ‘mammy daddy , mammy daddy’ as Ntcham did when in a position to block the shot for their second goal.

Before anyone rushes to correct me , of course Ollie is not primarily a defender but if you are back in your own box helping out the defence , you need to try to act like a defender. The same could be said for Kouassi’s impression of a can-can dancer at the first goal.

  3. Celtic had to work hard to make the Europa League and played 10 games to get there so for me it’s on the European stage where the Club has to impress rather than the domestic League Cup to showcase the club and the squad.

I think Gordon Strachan summed it up when he said something on the following lines.

The team that runs fastest, jumps highest and tackles hardest, wins.

We do not have enough players to fit that profile.

Morgan with a nice turn left a defender for dead but another chased him, got alongside and muscled the lad off the ball. That is not to criticise the player who is technically gifted just an example of why we struggle in Europe when under pressure.

One of the best pieces of play from us was Lewis playing Odsonne in for our early chance. Apart from that magic bit of skill, Lewis disappointed me. Looked like a wee bhoy lost at times, or a wee bhoy playing with big bhoys on school playground.

I like Ncham, but he gave the ball very cheaply away last night continually.

Passed straight out the park three times, passed it straight to Liepzig players three more when not overly pressured, controlled it further than I can kick it a few more and was generally very sloppy in posession – he has bags of skill but really needs to brush up on that aspect of his game. It continually put us under pressure, even in that relatively good first 30 minutes.

Easy to forget our opponents last night sit just 1 point behind Bayern Munich & with RB pouring in the cash Is this legal ?

*good to see you phosting Stephen, I gave last night’s game a lot of thought and once the disappointment had dissipated I actually woke up this morning without that gutted feeling.

I have came to the conclusion that the people who sit at the top table of our club, I include BR here, have realised that the days of clubs like us, Ajax, Porto etc winning a European trophy, and not just the Big Cup, are few and far between hence the pursuit of a 3rd trophy which us minnows can compete for.

So it’s my belief that we are now presently content just to compete for the experience, money and give our support a wee day out free from the cheating and thuggery that is plainly evident in Scotland and concentrate on domestic trophies.

It’s a very sad situation that country that produced some of the best players ever to grace the game, which educated the world in football and who the english labelled “Scotch Professors” whose influence led to a change in the way football was played and which has continued up to the present day is now scorned.

Many of these Scots introduced football across the then British Empire and beyond, particularly to countries such as Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and Czechoslovakia has descended so low that they are a laughing stock and I blame one mendacious, narcissistic person for that and a clandestine organisation that allowed it and still controls the game.

Scotland is also known the world over as the “home of golf” and yet in the top 10 golfers today are an englishman born in Johannesburg, Irishman from the black north, Italian, Ozzie, Spaniard and a bunch of yanks.

Scotland a country that made crucial contributions to science, philosophy, literature, education, medicine, commerce, and politics, contributions that have formed and nurtured the modern West ever since and yet the same corrupt organisation led to many of its finest minds to leave and not just for money but fairness and recognition.

So in saying all that if what I believe is true lets back off fae the anti DD/PL rhetoric until at least the Sabbath when hopefully the real Celtic show up.

BTW for all the Natims oot there the clock at hame “falls” back this Sunday at 2 a.m., I use the NA term fall as “autumns” back disnae sound right.

There are plenty of £49 soul selling ticket merchants in the stands, and that is were the root of the problems, and, the solution of the problems lie.

  13. Disappointing on Thursday.

Come on the Celtic – Lets put on a show in Edinburgh.

Let Brendan build a Team, Back him when he most needs it and that Time was indeed in the Summer – Dinnae make that mistake again Celtic.

Those selected have played so many more games than so many more Teams in Europe in Brendans tenure and he deserved his Team to be refreshed with 2 or 3 First team ready players that would have cost a bit more.

  14. DD,

Asked the guy who sells the Big Issue. He’ll get you one no problem seeing yer a mate of mine. Not crowded at the moment. In Bar 67. He’s usually good at getting tickets. Up to you.

  15. AULDHEID,

I was saying today that our opponents last night looked stronger physically. They brushed us aside regularly, fairly and easily.

I still wonder why our manager played both Kouassi and Gamboa, as they are obviously not in his plans and can’t be match fit. Imo, they were the chief culprits for our losing the 2 goals. The only reason I can think of was, with our injuries and suspensions to the team for Sunday, he saw it as a risk worth taking.

  16. I watched the huns game last night – a mate called at the end of our game so I forgot to switch over, and despite being sick at the result and Bt’s commentary I kept it on in the background. They have improved, they had to…….we wont have it as easy this year – off or on the field,

  17. For all you Bowie fans.

Tonight at 10.55, BBC4 is showing an hour of David Bowie’s legendary 2000 Pyramid Stage performance from Glastonbury.

Much of which has never been broadcast before.

That’s what the trailer for it says, anyway.

    A minor qualification.

I feel that our European opponents are much more of a competitive challenge than theirs .

Comparing us to the zombies ….

I would say that we have a better squad of players

they are getting more from their players than we are at the moment

our style and superior players allows us to beat teams in Scotland a bit better than they do

for some reason, our style does not match up as well against European opponents as theirs (faster paced) seems to ….

  21. Big Packy.

On a serious note, obviously a good few changes in their line up, over the years but for me, Ian Gillan on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar.
