Gary Hooper and Celtic strategy

796

Sky have reported that Celtic have accepted a £5m bid from QPR for Gary Hooper.  Gary is in the final year of his contract and has declined to sign a new deal which has been no offer for almost a year now.

It will surprise some, perhaps including the player, that an English Premier League club have not made a move, but QPR have the cash to compete with most in the top flight, so the financial rewards for the player will be comparable.

For Celtic the proposition is simple, if the player is not going to extend his stay beyond this season, and an offer matching valuation is received, it is better they know where they stand as early in the transfer window as possible.  We’ll know soon enough if the player wants to move.  As we said about Victor, it’s always hard to lose a good one, but I’ve yet to meet someone who would walk away from a deal north of £50k per week, so fair play to Gary, whatever he decides.

Neil Lennon had never hid his admiration for the player but the Celtic strategy is clear enough.  If Gary decides to move it’s all about finding the right replacement, they days of slavishly watching players run down their contracts are over.

Have you done your thing for 1254125 yet?  The supporters group working with Celtic Charity proposed we get as many as possible signed up to running a 10k, hoping each person can raise £125.  We’ve teamed up with The Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6 October and extended the scope a bit, to include those who don’t quite have the legs for 10k.

On Saturday 5 October, The Great Scottish Run also organise supporting events you can enter and raise your £125:

100m Toddler Dask (0-5 yrs)
1.5k Mini Run (5-8 yrs)
2.5k Junior Run (9-15 yrs)
Family Mile (Adults and children from 3 yrs)

If you are particularly fit, you can enter the Half Marathon on the Sunday.  It is going to be a great family weekend.  If you know a kid who is keen to participate and get involved in 1254125, let them know.

If the legs won’t support you for 10k, you can gingerly make your way along the Family Mile.

To sign up you need to register with The Great Scottish Run first.  Register here if you are participating in the 10k or Half Marathon, and here if you are participating in the Saturday events, then register here with Celtic Charity (scroll down the page until you see Great Scottish Run).

Just over 10 weeks to go, get your application in and get every Celtic fan you know with a pair of trainers to sign up.  I’m doing the 10k, so will be out running tonight…….

  1. Kojo,

FC Porto, Ajax and others have to sell. Manchester Utd have to sell sometimes. Thanks to Harry for giving us further funds to find someone who wants to play for us.

  2. Apologiea I havent read back. I know it was probably inevitable we sold hooper. I woukd even say fair play to celtic for trying to get him on a long we r contract. But the fact remains that we have sold our two best players ahead of our most important games.

What does that tell you about priorities at cp?

If we have ata good ais strategy then why are we not instant ly ready with replacement s?

When will we have enough in the bank? What do celtic exiat to do?

22:07 on 24 July, 2013Bada, comfortable being critical about Celtic? So be it.

Is that the best you can do? Make sure your Celtic View subscription is up to date.We are debating the gamble of selling 2 of our best players without having adequate replacements. Therefore going into a massive game next week in a weaker position, after having received huge CL money and VW’s fee.Good management? Not in my book.I will be there on Saturday as ever supporting the team.Constructive criticism can be healthy.Sniping at a post you don’t like is not IMO.

    Another scenario…

Your best player is worth 7-8 million, has had a great season but gets a bad injury, is out for months and isn’t the same player when he comes back. I give you both Kayal and Izagurre, maybe even Boruc

As much as i wanted Victor to stay, and a committed Hooper, keeping your best players doesnt always work out the way you would want.

Unfortunately, few of the posters here have actually run a football club or managed a team (Championship Manager probably doesnt count), so have never had to make any such decisions

Why sell when you don’t have to_________________

One supposes that Napoli Quick News has been in meltdown these past few weeks following the sale of Cavani for 63M Euros?

Bankrupt in 2004 (they ended up in Serie C) – they set about putting a financial strategy in place to get themselves back on the fringes of the top 4 Italian Clubs.

Massive scouting system – players bought/ loaned – every player had a price. Attractive football – constant turnover of players – money re-invested in new buys and wages.

Finally in 2013 they reach the ‘Holy Grail’ – automatic CL qualification…………..

and what do they do? Sell their top striker (100+ goals in 3 seasons) for 63M Euros!

Cavani – I want to go to Real Madrid. Napoli CEO pay the price and he’s yours. Man City/ Chelsea make offers – PSG put the money on the table and the deal was done.

Hooper was made an increased offer – he chose to refuse it. Why? No idea – maybe he and his agent thought he was worth more. So why hold on to an asset that is decreasing in value?

We are a Football Club that is results driven – it needs to be financed and if some ‘wanabee’ striker wants to upset that financial model then its time to punt him.

Now if Hooper does go to QPR – what does that tell you? Slightly better wages? Probably – but more likely a serious financial bonus for getting back into the EPL.

Don’t have to sell? Player signed a contract – high time we dictated terms. We are not running some kind of sports social club for playboy millionaires.

  13. Gary will probably go and a replacement will be bought then we move on and see what happens.

    Simplecsc

ps Gary & Victor chose to leave, they were made good offers but chose to look elsewhere.

pps if Gary was on say £20k what do you think the board should have offered him and would it have made any difference? If they dont want to stay find a replacement and let them go, I have no doubt Neil and others have people in mind and a lot of ground work will have been done whether they sign or are successful is another matter.

    John O’Neill

You say that we couldn’t afford Saviola’s wages. My hope that Celtic would be interested in Saviola was based on two factors:

    1. Some years ago Saviola went on loan from Barca to Monaco and turned down a loan move to Celtic. He didn’t view his loan as a success and was quoted as saying that he wished he had signed for Celtic as he had come to believe that he would have been much more successful with Celtic at the time.

    2. Someone on CQN said the other week that Saviola had indicated that he had made a lot of money from football and that money would not be a factor in his decision to sign for a team.

However, it is possible that his type of player did not fit in with the manager’s future plans.

    And yet and yet.

Our best days were when we didn’t have the most business minded people in the UK handling our affairs.

  24. Surely with the money earned of late in both C L & transfers we can afford to invest in players with a better track record than the initial strategy of buying unknowns with little or no track record.

If we can find a player in Wanyama for 900k and sell for £12m then upping the ante to 2/3/4 million pound players is surely less of a risk , but develop them as we did Vic and we may sell for £20m.

Surely the policy we have must be based on adding quality to our team and then sell on , improving our quality year on year?

The scatter gun approach may get u the odd gem like big Vic but mostly failures

  30. Sadie, yes I read those points about him but did he actually say he would have joined us in the past? Moreover, many Euro clubs don’t care about debt. They then end up in huge trouble. Celtic cannot compete with reckless sides who give crazy amounts of money to the likes of Saviola. I suspect the Greeks fall into that category.

Kojo, I am not from Glasgow but my father is. I am 33. Am I that person then?
