Gary Hooper and Celtic strategy

796

Sky have reported that Celtic have accepted a £5m bid from QPR for Gary Hooper.  Gary is in the final year of his contract and has declined to sign a new deal which has been no offer for almost a year now.

It will surprise some, perhaps including the player, that an English Premier League club have not made a move, but QPR have the cash to compete with most in the top flight, so the financial rewards for the player will be comparable.

For Celtic the proposition is simple, if the player is not going to extend his stay beyond this season, and an offer matching valuation is received, it is better they know where they stand as early in the transfer window as possible.  We’ll know soon enough if the player wants to move.  As we said about Victor, it’s always hard to lose a good one, but I’ve yet to meet someone who would walk away from a deal north of £50k per week, so fair play to Gary, whatever he decides.

Neil Lennon had never hid his admiration for the player but the Celtic strategy is clear enough.  If Gary decides to move it’s all about finding the right replacement, they days of slavishly watching players run down their contracts are over.

Have you done your thing for 1254125 yet?  The supporters group working with Celtic Charity proposed we get as many as possible signed up to running a 10k, hoping each person can raise £125.  We’ve teamed up with The Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6 October and extended the scope a bit, to include those who don’t quite have the legs for 10k.

On Saturday 5 October, The Great Scottish Run also organise supporting events you can enter and raise your £125:

100m Toddler Dask (0-5 yrs)
1.5k Mini Run (5-8 yrs)
2.5k Junior Run (9-15 yrs)
Family Mile (Adults and children from 3 yrs)

If you are particularly fit, you can enter the Half Marathon on the Sunday.  It is going to be a great family weekend.  If you know a kid who is keen to participate and get involved in 1254125, let them know.

If the legs won’t support you for 10k, you can gingerly make your way along the Family Mile.

To sign up you need to register with The Great Scottish Run first.  Register here if you are participating in the 10k or Half Marathon, and here if you are participating in the Saturday events, then register here with Celtic Charity (scroll down the page until you see Great Scottish Run).

Just over 10 weeks to go, get your application in and get every Celtic fan you know with a pair of trainers to sign up.  I’m doing the 10k, so will be out running tonight…….

There’s goals in him, seldom misses the chance to shoot and his luck will change soon. I also liked his desire to pass the ball early when he first came into the team.

Also think Ambrose will play in the middle this season. I know that’s not the case so far but the injuries have undermined Mr Lennon’s prep.

I would only have wanted to sign Saviola if his wages were affordable to us. I don’t think he ever indicated in the past that he wanted to sign permanently for us but he did say he regretted bot coming on loan.

It was suggested to me that Celtic`s and Elfsborg`s seedings meant that we shouldn`t meet. Can anyone clear this up? Thanks.

    Hope this helps to explain.

There were 34 teams in the round that Celtic played Cliftonville.

Both Celtic and Elfsborg were seeded because of their own high coefficient rank.

(The top 17 seeded the bottom 17 unseeded.)

The 17 winners are then put into a pot with another 3 teams who qualify due to their country’s higher ranking coefficient.

Out of those 20 teams, the top 10 are seeded and bottom 10 unseeded based on that teams coefficent.

Celtic are in the top ten because of their high coefficient rank, Elfsborg are in the bottom ten because of their lower rank.

That is why we could draw them.

The 10 winners of these games are then put into a pot.

5 seeded and 5 unseeded based on coefficient rank.

We make the seeded section in that as well.

So, if they win their games (and we win ours!) we can draw one of five teams.

Dinamo Zagreb. Partizan Belgrade. Legia Warsaw. Austria Vienna. Shaktar Karaganda.

  10. Interesting discussions tonight and I have enjoyed the various views, however I am aware of how far we have traveled from pre Lenny days. The decision makers in our club must put the interests of our shareholders first. Thanks to Fergus we are a business as well as a unique football team and therefore I think the decision to sell VW and GH was the correct one.

I feel the purchases so far this summer have been excellent and all will achieve and I expect two more players to come in at a total cost of 5 to 7mill.

Qualification for the CL is always a gamble but I believe we will get there, failing that 1 season in the Europa league where we will do very well.

Finally I think Rogic has more potential than any player apart from VW we have purchased recently,

  11. Well thanks anyway Kojo.

Sadie, he would have been interesting but we seem to have problems with finding South Americans who can adapt to our game. Is he worth £50,000 a week for Europe alone?

    Willie Maley was his name

He brought some great names to the game

When he was the boss at Celtic Park

He taught them how to play football

He made the greatest of them all

Gallacher and Quinn have left their mark.

And they gave us James McGrory and Paul McStay

They gave us Johnstone, Tully, Murdoch, Auld and Hay

And most of the football greats

    Have past through Parkheads gates

For to play football the Glasgow Celtic way.

In 38 there was a show Glasgow was the place to go

A model of the tower was footballs prize

England sent 4 of the best

They didn’t meet with much success

Cause the trophy ended up in paradise.

Coronation time was here 53 that was the year

Another 4 from England met there doom

They said we’ll have to try again

But like before it was in vain

Because the cup is in the Parkhead trophy room.

And then in 1957 we faced a guy called Gorgie Nevin

The game is etched on every Celtic fan

    Wilson, Mochan and Mc Phail

And Willie Fernie scored as well

As Celtic beat the Rangers 7-1.

So 10 years they had gone and so

To Portugal we had to go, to play the team that Italy

    Adore

    Celtic went out to attack

They won the big cup and they brought it back

It’s the first time it had been on British shores.

And now a new Millennium we have a brand new stadium

We’re amongst the honours once again

The Celtic fans did proudly sing

  22. For those calling on Rogic to toughen up. Why? He is a flair player. A team is built with players of different attributes. Not all of them have to be physical. Did Lubo have to toughen up? Does Messi?

Other players win the ball and give it to Rogic so he can do the damage his way. With inventive passes, purposeful running with the ball (i.e. not sideways) and occasional goals.

  28. A lot of talk about Javier Saviola. Give it a rest. He was offered to every club in Europe (not only), including Legia Warsaw.

  29. hoops refused an improved contract as did victor. victor is off and both hoops will be sold to the highest bidder. cant recall any celtic fan being overjoyed when we signed either player for a little over 3 million so maybe we shouldn’t worry as much. 17 million for two players is great for celtic tbh. if any mistakes have been made in this case it was keeping hoops beyond January 2012.

PL has backed NFL 100% but in a pragmatic manner that does not endanger the clubs very existence. about 9 players have left this season, 7 of whom offered little the other two offered a lot. we have added 3 players so far and I suspect another 2 will follow. celtic will put out the best team possible and that team will play as well as they can.

Celtic’s progress off the pitch is important to success on the pitch. if Celtic can grow the business we will see a stronger team. i.e. if the kerrydale bar is a success in year 1, for example, I surprised another stadium bar will open another etc… which generates income used to make a profit that in turn increases turnover and profit for players wages etc… same goes for season tickets price reduction, if it gets more people through the door and increases income it will continue.

maybe short term pain (losing some players) now will aid further business growth (celtic triangle, superstore, museum, café, restaurant etc…) and that will feed back into the team and team budget.

  32. Is maybe the reason why Celtic dont/cant sign an £8m player is because such a player would demand £50k per week (£2.5m per season + on costs). Celtic cant afford that. English teams can

When Celtic signed Sutton etc, Celtic were able to pay wages that compared with those in England. Now, a team relegated from the English top division, with a ground capacity of 18,360 can outbid Celtic

  34. Bhoys and Ghirls,

Are we not losing the plot tonight?. We all knew VW and Hoops would be leaving if the valuation matched Celtic’s asking price and the players agents got their pots of gold. So be it, lets move on. I too would prefer to retain all our best players, but lets get realistic. We are a selling club and as long as we play in Scotland it will be so.PL etc could simply not refuse 17.5 m approx. This is incredible business. It may not please everybody but it is a fact.

We are a bigger club than both QPR and Southampton but we ply our trade in the wrong environment. It is sad that a player will go to the Championship rather than the possibility of again getting to the last 16 of the CL but this is what is happening.

VW and Hoops are good but not great players and will be replaced. They would never IMO have reached legendary status like so many have achieved. The list of far better players leaving for “pennies” looms large.

We should also be wary of signing “big” as if it guarantees success. Remember Marc Antoine Fortune who we signed in 2009 in a deal worth 3.8m. This was big money at this time and Celtic’s finances was not so affluent. He came from WBA ( On loan from Nancy ) and had just won the WBA supporters player of the year, despite only signing in January. To say he had a unimpressive scoring record for us is being generous.

We need players who want to play for us, are willing to come to Scotland ( for now ) and will appreciate who we are and what we are. Granted, a tall order.

This is why our scouting system is so vital and hopefully superior to all our rivals and for now forms the basis of our philosophy. Buy cheap, realise potential and sell on.

This does not show a lack of ambition but is reality. The part our supporters play on the big occasion can not be underestimated and does give us an edge ( ref the GB display against Barca ) With ” Lesser” players all giving 100% allied with sound tactics for each individual game, unpredictable ( To some ) results will happen.

I am confident new signings will come and others will step up to the mark. Keep the faith.
