Gary Hooper and Celtic strategy

796

Sky have reported that Celtic have accepted a £5m bid from QPR for Gary Hooper.  Gary is in the final year of his contract and has declined to sign a new deal which has been no offer for almost a year now.

It will surprise some, perhaps including the player, that an English Premier League club have not made a move, but QPR have the cash to compete with most in the top flight, so the financial rewards for the player will be comparable.

For Celtic the proposition is simple, if the player is not going to extend his stay beyond this season, and an offer matching valuation is received, it is better they know where they stand as early in the transfer window as possible.  We’ll know soon enough if the player wants to move.  As we said about Victor, it’s always hard to lose a good one, but I’ve yet to meet someone who would walk away from a deal north of £50k per week, so fair play to Gary, whatever he decides.

Neil Lennon had never hid his admiration for the player but the Celtic strategy is clear enough.  If Gary decides to move it’s all about finding the right replacement, they days of slavishly watching players run down their contracts are over.

Have you done your thing for 1254125 yet?  The supporters group working with Celtic Charity proposed we get as many as possible signed up to running a 10k, hoping each person can raise £125.  We’ve teamed up with The Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6 October and extended the scope a bit, to include those who don’t quite have the legs for 10k.

On Saturday 5 October, The Great Scottish Run also organise supporting events you can enter and raise your £125:

100m Toddler Dask (0-5 yrs)
1.5k Mini Run (5-8 yrs)
2.5k Junior Run (9-15 yrs)
Family Mile (Adults and children from 3 yrs)

If you are particularly fit, you can enter the Half Marathon on the Sunday.  It is going to be a great family weekend.  If you know a kid who is keen to participate and get involved in 1254125, let them know.

If the legs won’t support you for 10k, you can gingerly make your way along the Family Mile.

To sign up you need to register with The Great Scottish Run first.  Register here if you are participating in the 10k or Half Marathon, and here if you are participating in the Saturday events, then register here with Celtic Charity (scroll down the page until you see Great Scottish Run).

Just over 10 weeks to go, get your application in and get every Celtic fan you know with a pair of trainers to sign up.  I’m doing the 10k, so will be out running tonight…….

You all know what I mean by ‘the touch’?

That player that takes any pass from a team mate, controls it wi instinct and already has his head up looking to do damage.

Sometimes you have to pay big bucks for a player like that, other times it falls in your lap. Lubo? But rarely.

Hope we steer well clear of Saviola, good player when he feels like it, and thats why I don’t want him. Ego outweighs the talent.

    Potentially disruptive influence.

That to me is a perfect summation of G Hooper too!

  10. BAD NEWS – Sydney ‘Tim’ has been working for PSG and would not want to come to Scotland despite there being a population of 5 million and vast untapped TV revenue. Maybe Sydney ‘Tim’ could think of a way to solve this.

  11. aromananonly1 on

I know this site is full of financial experts who feel duty bound to look after Celtic’s interests which is fair enough, but we’re on the verge of being significantly weakened from last years assault on the Champions League, We’ve brought in almost 40 MIllion between CL money, VW and Hooper, and spent around 4 million ? ( and got plenty of duds off the wage bill )

If we can’t strengthen properly with that sort of income ( which was never budgeted for ) then we never will, I’m very worried about the Elfsborg tie and if we’re minus arguably our two best players I would see it as 50/50 ! Balde is raw, very much a working progress and certainly not ready to fill Hoopers boots, we need a top class striker and a decent midfielder NOW to replace what we’ve lost.

  12. Sydney Tim,

The average salary in the EPL is £30.000 per week.

PL and the board could not compete with that even if CP hosted 100,000 persons every second week.

    HH, Always in Celtic.

  13. enie

you are correct, but in the sixties and early seventies we had a crop of young scots players coming through the ranks as did most teams.

  17. CultsBhoy loves being 1st forever & ever on

The kind of player Celtic really wants don’t really want Celtic/ SPL/ our wage structure… So we can only hope to provide a stepping stone experience for players who are seeking EPL teams but are attracted to getting CL on their CV.

    That is the reality.

  18. Kayal,

Yep, notes making a few blunders for me.

Mata would have been ideal scholes replacement.

Getting rid of a experienced coach in Rene meneulson and not keeping him part if the first team was stupid. Guy would have helped him loads, plus a great coach. He should have used him . He helped Fergus win a cl and get to another final.

  23. QPR land £5m hot shot Hooper as Celtic move for Evian striker Khelifa

    By Stephen Mcgowan

Celtic launched a £2.5million bid for Evian striker Saber Khelifa – after finally agreeing to sell Gary Hooper.

Hooper, last season’s top scorer, travelled south for talks with Queens Park Rangers after the Championship club agreed a fee of £5million.

Premiership Norwich could still enter the running after Hooper, signed from Scunthorpe for £1.6million, rejected the offer of a new Celtic contract.

But Loftus Road boss Harry Redknapp claimed a deal is almost done, telling STV: ‘It’s all been agreed. I’ve not been dealing with it but the chief executive and the chairman have been dealing with Celtic.

‘Hopefully we’re close to finally getting there but until it’s done you’re never sure.

‘He’s a player we’ve been chasing for a while and now we’ve agreed a deal with Celtic.

‘We’ve followed him from his days at Gray’s Athletic to Southend to Scunthorpe. Then he’s gone and scored goals at the highest level with Celtic.

‘So he’s proved that he’s a goalscorer and hopefully he can score some goals in the Championship now.

‘I would love to see him being leading goalscorer in the Championship and hopefully that would mean us being promoted.’

Neil Lennon is already planning for life after Hooper by pursuing a deal for 26-year-old Tunisian international Khelifa. As Sportsmail first revealed the Parkhead manager’s first choice was Hamburg’s Latvian striker Artjoms Rudnevs.

Despite seeking funds to support a bid for Everton’s former Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic, however, the Bundesliga side slapped a £4.5million pricetag on the forward’s head.

Celtic – who also chased Rudnevs when he quit Lech Poznan last summer – were willing to go to £3.5million, but refused to go any higher.

Now the Parkhead side will turn their attentions to Khelifa in the quest to fill Hooper’s boots.

Capped 23 times for his country the forward is in Tunisia awaiting a move after failing to return to Evian for pre-season training.

Watched by Lennon in Evian’s French Cup Final defeat to Bordeaux in May Khelifa has scored 16 goals in 54 appearances and was close to joining Montpellier before the move collapsed earlier this week.

Is there an Evian player we haven’t been linked with since Lenny attended the French cup final?

Another low scoring striker is not what we need.

  24. Lol. Amazing how people can say that I am advocating the whole team on 40k a week. Lol

Of course I am advocating one player who will score goals for us and put bums on seats being paid 30k per year. I don’t see the problem

Better one player on 30k a week and in the 1st eleven and scoring goals. Than 5 players on 10k per week doing a squad rotation up front to see who can hit the coo with a banjo.

See bangura , murphey, stokes, lassad, miku. For your 50k a week doon drain.
