Gary Hooper and Celtic strategy

796

Sky have reported that Celtic have accepted a £5m bid from QPR for Gary Hooper.  Gary is in the final year of his contract and has declined to sign a new deal which has been no offer for almost a year now.

It will surprise some, perhaps including the player, that an English Premier League club have not made a move, but QPR have the cash to compete with most in the top flight, so the financial rewards for the player will be comparable.

For Celtic the proposition is simple, if the player is not going to extend his stay beyond this season, and an offer matching valuation is received, it is better they know where they stand as early in the transfer window as possible.  We’ll know soon enough if the player wants to move.  As we said about Victor, it’s always hard to lose a good one, but I’ve yet to meet someone who would walk away from a deal north of £50k per week, so fair play to Gary, whatever he decides.

Neil Lennon had never hid his admiration for the player but the Celtic strategy is clear enough.  If Gary decides to move it’s all about finding the right replacement, they days of slavishly watching players run down their contracts are over.

Have you done your thing for 1254125 yet?  The supporters group working with Celtic Charity proposed we get as many as possible signed up to running a 10k, hoping each person can raise £125.  We’ve teamed up with The Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6 October and extended the scope a bit, to include those who don’t quite have the legs for 10k.

On Saturday 5 October, The Great Scottish Run also organise supporting events you can enter and raise your £125:

100m Toddler Dask (0-5 yrs)
1.5k Mini Run (5-8 yrs)
2.5k Junior Run (9-15 yrs)
Family Mile (Adults and children from 3 yrs)

If you are particularly fit, you can enter the Half Marathon on the Sunday.  It is going to be a great family weekend.  If you know a kid who is keen to participate and get involved in 1254125, let them know.

If the legs won’t support you for 10k, you can gingerly make your way along the Family Mile.

To sign up you need to register with The Great Scottish Run first.  Register here if you are participating in the 10k or Half Marathon, and here if you are participating in the Saturday events, then register here with Celtic Charity (scroll down the page until you see Great Scottish Run).

Just over 10 weeks to go, get your application in and get every Celtic fan you know with a pair of trainers to sign up.  I’m doing the 10k, so will be out running tonight…….

  1. The ole MSM faux clamour for Celtic to sign, sign, sign really is tedious, and they’ve even started on an 11.00pm CL deadline which Celtic will have no notion of, let alone intentions.

This is a typical very old Hun tactic, set for the dwindling dozens of Celtic fans that stilll believe a word they print, and much older than tweets about what Celtic fans were singing, so sevconianly doltish they’re timelined 3 hours before a game had even started.

A risky strategy selling your best players amid CL qualification, but business was brisk pre departures, and I’d not expect a plane with a name, and MSM will whip it up, for the gullible.

Lenny could yet turn out to be the best of the lot IMO.

I should say Lenny and Parks..

We need to place faith in our superscout to bring them in and faith in NFL to bring them on.

Listening to Dario Gradi on TS this morning – that guy is a genius and real football guy he understands the relationship between buying developing and selling players better than anyone – I think Lenny does to…

Longer term some of the Bigger Clubs will need to develop the same understanding as there must be a point at which it all becomes unsustainable even at the top level.

I think we are in a decent place.

He is due the utmost of respect and gratitude for what he achieved and the pride he restored in our great club BUT if the club had continued to fund Martins spending, our club would not be in relatively secure position it is now. We have men like Brian Quinn to thank for they secured our clubs long term future.

Martins era was incredible but it was an era that had to end. Gordon Strachans was remarkable as well, with what he achieved, given the need for austerity and what we now know was going on at the other m

We are a business as well as a club. Juggling the two in today’s economic times, in this backwater and remaining successful must be a tough job.

  7. Hooper definitely going then, no real surprise in the end. Let’s see who we get in to replace him. A few names mentioned – someone with a proven scoring record is needed.

I think we will bring in a couple more too. Might be towards the end of the window though. Just a guess …

My apologies Kev Jungle that should not have been “mushrooms that purport ” it should have been – “mushrooms that profess”.

I heard Messi was going to sign but PL said “only if you walk in Scott’s shadow”.

  9. Kev, Rafael was bewildering yet Quinn perhaps also sanctioned the Petrov signing. The sale of stan gave Celtic lots of money for someone who also didn’t wish to play for us anymore.

  10. Not too impressed by the stats of the potential Tunisian signing but it would be a mistake to write him off. Anybody seen him? Preferred the Latvian but it seems he may not wish to go to Scotland.

  11. Loved both MON and Gordon Strachan.

O’Neill broke them, Gordon continued, Lenny has done the same.

Would have Gordon Strachan back in a heartbeat if we where ever to look after NL goes.

Think now Gordon has understood the buy young and using scouts by watching Lenny bring in these guys and forming a formidable team.

I think Strachan would revel in the same sort of environment with the young players like the wanyamas ledley, kayals etc..

Probably get that vision of the brand of football we seen scarcly after his first season.

Strachan had follow MON tough in anybody shoes but he knew he had to get results at the same time to win over the support. His ideas probaly went out the window after the Artmedia game and Motherwell game.

Win at all costs probaly reuslting in the football being turgid in some games.

Best night for me was the Benfica night 3 – 0 game. We destryped them playing fat tempo possesioin football. Though after that GS wold take off but in never happened.

  12. Looks like hooper to Norwich according to ssn unless arry has a brown envelope (allegedly)

  13. Re: above the new away strip, yet another I will not buy. Wish they would get shot of Nike the majority of strips since they come along have been absolute garbage!

  14. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

WGS- from time to time your namesake’s team could play innovative football- a swell as Benfica there was the destruction of St Mirren [7-0?].

And then he would return to the default style, which was pretty turgid [did we even bring out a DVD of the ‘highlights’ of the Double winning season?]

History will show that he brought more silverwear to CP than Tommy Burns, but the Burns team may be regarded with greater affection.

    ==============================================================

Despite his goals he has been a distraction to forward planning as NL continued to hold out for his retention, hence no Johnny Russell which would have weakened the NL ” we want to keep him ” plea. Subsequently this has put a strain on the PL relationship which did not exist previously.

He will not be going to QPR they are being used. Right Delia.

What keeps me awake some nights is wondering whether Tommy Burns team was a victim of more cheating than Gordon Stachan’s and the history books will forever tell who the most successful of Celtic managers was but they’ll never, ever, even hint as to which was subjected to the most cheating.

It bursts yer nut if you ever try to figure it out, knowing that what is out in the public domain is only a fraction of the shenanigans.

Our strips of late are all designed to promote Magners. If Tennants come back in again maybe our strips will have some of their girls printed onto our shirts. It’d be different.

  21. RObert,

I think that you are right to say that the MO’N era was necessary in order to develop Celtic’s prestige and to of course lift all of our morale after years of ineptitude. Yet it would have ruined the club had he been allowed to indulge in further years of buying from England.

  22. No doubt about it after the revelations of the media being on the payroll and the SFA shennaigans Fergus and TB would have stopped the nine if it wasn’t for the cheating by Murray and the cardigan.

Sounnes and Smith are very much culpable as David Murray. The knew they where cheating etc.. Heads up on signings as well to stop us from getting stronger.

McLarren, Petric, McCann, Adamczuk, to name a few.

Smiths 9 in a rown is slowly being devalued.

Any other country the media being bought and financial cheating would have been big news.

Worst thing for David Murray and Ramgers was the introduction of the internet. That’s something he couldn’t control. None of this would have came out otherwise.

  23. Ladies & gents if you feel you dont know how to help in this 125 yr ,give an hour of your time to TKF bucket collection before the Ross County game and ensure the next generation of kids get a chance to watch the hoops that they may never have got but for peoplle like TKF.

The look on the weans faces as they march into the ground is priceless.

  24. Some curious responses to finances of late……like we have 25M in the bank so we should spend it kind of thing?

Its like your house roof is 50 years old….you know it will need repaired….you drop the money on a kitchen and 4×4 because it looks nice…mmmmm

A 3-4M player on a 4 year deal would be around 7-8M in total…….a couple of those and the money is gone……..and no roof money in reserve.

    Just saying……

Tommy Burns’ teams played with all the flair and élan that Celtic are famous for.

He brought back the pride in being a Celtic fan,the anticipation of going, the post-match “did ye see?…” discussions.

His time may not have been rewarded with a large return of silverware, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.
