Gary Hooper and Celtic strategy

796

Sky have reported that Celtic have accepted a £5m bid from QPR for Gary Hooper.  Gary is in the final year of his contract and has declined to sign a new deal which has been no offer for almost a year now.

It will surprise some, perhaps including the player, that an English Premier League club have not made a move, but QPR have the cash to compete with most in the top flight, so the financial rewards for the player will be comparable.

For Celtic the proposition is simple, if the player is not going to extend his stay beyond this season, and an offer matching valuation is received, it is better they know where they stand as early in the transfer window as possible.  We’ll know soon enough if the player wants to move.  As we said about Victor, it’s always hard to lose a good one, but I’ve yet to meet someone who would walk away from a deal north of £50k per week, so fair play to Gary, whatever he decides.

Neil Lennon had never hid his admiration for the player but the Celtic strategy is clear enough.  If Gary decides to move it’s all about finding the right replacement, they days of slavishly watching players run down their contracts are over.

Have you done your thing for 1254125 yet?  The supporters group working with Celtic Charity proposed we get as many as possible signed up to running a 10k, hoping each person can raise £125.  We’ve teamed up with The Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6 October and extended the scope a bit, to include those who don’t quite have the legs for 10k.

On Saturday 5 October, The Great Scottish Run also organise supporting events you can enter and raise your £125:

100m Toddler Dask (0-5 yrs)
1.5k Mini Run (5-8 yrs)
2.5k Junior Run (9-15 yrs)
Family Mile (Adults and children from 3 yrs)

If you are particularly fit, you can enter the Half Marathon on the Sunday.  It is going to be a great family weekend.  If you know a kid who is keen to participate and get involved in 1254125, let them know.

If the legs won’t support you for 10k, you can gingerly make your way along the Family Mile.

To sign up you need to register with The Great Scottish Run first.  Register here if you are participating in the 10k or Half Marathon, and here if you are participating in the Saturday events, then register here with Celtic Charity (scroll down the page until you see Great Scottish Run).

Just over 10 weeks to go, get your application in and get every Celtic fan you know with a pair of trainers to sign up.  I’m doing the 10k, so will be out running tonight…….

Replacement for ole #88 has to be a proven goalscorer AND be able to make an instant, CL qualifying contribution.

    No pressure there, then

Look how long it took us to get the best out of S.Brown and the #9 Enigma.

I am up for this but before I commit, I’d need some pledges.

Anybody more confident of raising the cash should go for it.

Anybody willing to make a pledge to convince me that I should, let me know by email at Morrisseythe23rd’aol.com Thanks!

    excathedra44,

Looks like QPR was a stalking horse, or maybe a big money fall back position. I’m sure Norwich won’t offer him any more money, maybe even less. But it is the top division.

    ================================================================

I agree, however QPR have money behind them,as opposed to Norwich who always appear to just manage to survive.

Perhaps his gamble is visibility for one season which may get him a better move,as I feel QPR could come back up and Norwich go down.

I believe his move to be a mistake, however given his mood swings then I will not be as upset as KD departing circa 1979.

  5. Feel a lot better that Hoopers off to Norwich and not QPR

Says more about the player as although he will be on more money than at Celtic, Norwich won’t pay as much as QPR. He obviously just wants to play in the EPL, which we can’t be annoyed with Gary about as he is an English boy at the end of the day

Good deal all round, here’s hoping we have a 10-15% clause in there too, can see him moving to a Spurs or Liverpool in a couple of years if things go well for Hoops

If Norwich hadn’t bidded, would’ve been gutted to see him swap champions league for championship, although he might have chosen to stay at us rather than QPR, but I don’t think there’s much chance of him turning down Norwich.

No pressure at all – indeed.

I think the Celtic intention is to try to qualify, then consider spend if we reach group football.

    It’s too late CSC

    Norwich?

If they go down, then Hooper’s goals will get them back up.

Result being he will be classed as a striker who canny quite do it at the top level.

Big risk-can he score 15 goals this season and keep them up?

Not so sure, but good luck anyway.

  9. i wonder if anybody will take a number 88 or 67 jersey on their arrival.

Think we might end up back to the normal numbers

  10. Would take Doyle in right now £1.5m easy peasy (he IS better than Stokes)

However we’d need someone else, of better quality than Doyle who will guarantee 25 goals a year

    But who?

Re start times for the Half Marathon.

It’s a staggered start, when you register you will be asked what time you expect to finish, say 2hrs. Your bib will be colour coded and you go into the penn with the corresponding colour.

So your official start time is the same as the elite athletes. The penns are noved up as the one in front begins. Your individual time isnt started until you cross the line, chip in the bib triggers it.

    See you there.

    Poor analogy.

Fans don’t want money spent on players just for the hell of it.

Spending money on players, if done right, should help generate income by securing a run in Europe.

The ideal scenario is that we keep buying class players and selling them on at a profit after they have contributed to European success.

The concern is that we sell our better players and don’t manage to replace them with players of similar calibre and thereby lose out in Europe.

Right! It seem I am jumping out of a plane at 10,000 feet to raise money to support those suffering from leukaemia. I have a VERY short time to raise the money. £485 minimum.

I really need you guys to support this by donating to my ‘Skydive for Stiliyan’.

Please email me at Morrisseythe23rd@aol.com if you intend to sponsor and also tell me how much.

I suffer from vertigo so this wont be easy. Pay to make me suffer or for the good cause.

I should be sectioned for agreeing to this. Thanks!

If he goes to Norwich it will be interesting how he is deployed given my theory that since Bougherra done him his preference was to drop deeper. They play with one up and I don’t see him in the lone front man chasing role.

I think they also signed Van Wolfswinkel who will be first pick,so his role will be interesting.

Hooper played the lone front man in the Nou Camp and I think I lost more sweat on the terracing,so that is not his preferred position.

    We shall see.

So Souness says he would plant a flag at parkhead if he was manager of a dead club?? And the papers print this?!

He also says Rangers were ‘moved down the leagues’ as ‘punishment’. So they’re not even going with the relegation myth now?

How can they keep printing this stuff! Liquidation is fact. New club is fact. Stop making stuff up.

And anyway, the holy goalie was the one that flaunted a Celtic Chanpions flag at Ibrox before they died. Get it up ye Souness.

Crosses my mind that pairing Hooper and van Wolfswinkel is a decent looking forward line.

At £13.5M, it doesn’t come cheap, Canaries notwithstanding.

I don’t think that’s true. The fact is that most players and especially strikers in the >£5m market can pick and choose who they want to play for.

Accounts suggest we tried to buy Artjom Rudnevs for about that but he didn’t fancy playing in Scotland.

Its a tough one… but the best players in our team Samaras, Hooper, Wanyama, Izzy, Lustig, Matthews were all square pegs or unproven when we bought them.

To be honest this buy buy buy conversation is getting a bit boring because people keep moaning and exhorting Celtic to spend but they don’t suggest any reasonable striker targets who are available.

  21. Hooper and Van Wolfswinkle, there’s goals there..
