Gary Hooper and Celtic strategy

796

Sky have reported that Celtic have accepted a £5m bid from QPR for Gary Hooper.  Gary is in the final year of his contract and has declined to sign a new deal which has been no offer for almost a year now.

It will surprise some, perhaps including the player, that an English Premier League club have not made a move, but QPR have the cash to compete with most in the top flight, so the financial rewards for the player will be comparable.

For Celtic the proposition is simple, if the player is not going to extend his stay beyond this season, and an offer matching valuation is received, it is better they know where they stand as early in the transfer window as possible.  We’ll know soon enough if the player wants to move.  As we said about Victor, it’s always hard to lose a good one, but I’ve yet to meet someone who would walk away from a deal north of £50k per week, so fair play to Gary, whatever he decides.

Neil Lennon had never hid his admiration for the player but the Celtic strategy is clear enough.  If Gary decides to move it’s all about finding the right replacement, they days of slavishly watching players run down their contracts are over.

Have you done your thing for 1254125 yet?  The supporters group working with Celtic Charity proposed we get as many as possible signed up to running a 10k, hoping each person can raise £125.  We’ve teamed up with The Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6 October and extended the scope a bit, to include those who don’t quite have the legs for 10k.

On Saturday 5 October, The Great Scottish Run also organise supporting events you can enter and raise your £125:

100m Toddler Dask (0-5 yrs)
1.5k Mini Run (5-8 yrs)
2.5k Junior Run (9-15 yrs)
Family Mile (Adults and children from 3 yrs)

If you are particularly fit, you can enter the Half Marathon on the Sunday.  It is going to be a great family weekend.  If you know a kid who is keen to participate and get involved in 1254125, let them know.

If the legs won’t support you for 10k, you can gingerly make your way along the Family Mile.

To sign up you need to register with The Great Scottish Run first.  Register here if you are participating in the 10k or Half Marathon, and here if you are participating in the Saturday events, then register here with Celtic Charity (scroll down the page until you see Great Scottish Run).

Just over 10 weeks to go, get your application in and get every Celtic fan you know with a pair of trainers to sign up.  I’m doing the 10k, so will be out running tonight…….

The old football thing is exactly like a soap opera.

The more you dip into it the more obsessed you get.

So when I saw, (for example) Joe Ledley, I thought, good big athlete, free, no brainer.

But I didn’t think much else.

I used to be excited by football, by players cleverer than my expectations.

Then Pat McCourt rolled up, a true artist.

And I loved that, that I could be thrilled again by a talent I could only dream of.

Wee James has some of it.

    The big keeper too perhaps.

    But the Rogic fella…

He has me excited all over again.

Nearer 58 than 57 and supported Celtic all my life, I’ve seen them come and seen them go.

Hooper can score goals of that there is no doubt but if he chooses to leave Paradise then Good Luck son your choice.

I realise the value for money his transfer will mean but to be honest that’s not my concern.

I think the sooner we all realise that nobody at Celtic Park is there for the jersey anymore is the day we move into the 21 century. They don’t have same feeling or passion as we all have.

I’ve often said that If I were lucky enough to win the Halftime Windfall draw I’d take my shoes and socks off before stepping on the hallowed turf just so I could feel the grass beneath my feet. That’s what it would mean to me.

Good luck Gary and thank yourself for the memories, they’ll never feel as good.

  7. what the hell do we care on

@greenpinata and sandman and weefra: great posts

Someone said earlier that even with Hooper we’d never have beaten Juve: hindsight is a false wisdom. At the time I thought he gave us a better chance, but then his slack pass just inside our half led to a goal. And Efe was – not as good as he should’ve been ;-). All water under the bridge but at the time I was (I think not unreasonably) optimistic that we could pull off an upset. It wasn’t to be and Lenny and the team will hopefully have learned from that.

If Hooper is for the off there is almost 0.01% chance that we will get someone in and INTEGRATED INTO THE TEAM before the CL qualifier, so I think Lenny believes the current squad should see us through. And that’s good enough for me.

BUT it is a sport, and part of the “fun” is that unfancied opposition can sometimes overcome more illustrious opponents (c.f. Celtic 2 – 1 Barcelona). If Elfsborg win I don’t think we can draw direct correlations between Wanyama or Hooper leaving, or failure to sign Saviola (or any other target) – football is more complicated than that. In Lenny I Trust. HH

Pirlo Takes Aim at SFA on The Ranger’s Behalf.

Italian superstar Andrea Pirlo was asked recently what he thought of the Ex Scottish champions having to go through so many qualifiers to get to the Final of the wee Diddy Scottish Communities League Cup. The midfielder did not mince his words.

“It’s an insult The Rangers to have to enter the qualifiers this early on – It’s an insult to the One year history of the club and all they have achieved in Europe recently” lol

Alistair McCoist last week spoke of the disappointment of having to negotiate through these qualifiers 12 months after they competed in the last 16 of The Ramsden Cup.

McCoist said: ‘Am I baffled that a club that reached the Ramsden Cup last 16 has to play these qualifiers? Yes. I think it has to be looked at. I don’t think it’s fair considering the season we had and the amount of games we played.”

The seeding rules at present ensure a tougher route to the Scottish Communities Cup Final for any team that wins the Irn Bru Div3 which Pirlo again disagrees with –

“As champions they should not need to play other Wee Diddy Teams, it is not fitting for a club of their size.”

However with no plans for SFA to change the system any time soon, Oh Wait..!! The Rangers will have to get used to early starts to the season.

McCoist thinks the format is against Big Diddy teams..with The Coach (fearing) Burn Out.

    2. In the event that five clubs qualify for UEFA Club Competitions, those five clubs will be exempt from playing in the Competition until the Third Round. In any season where fewer than five Clubs qualify for UEFA competitions the number of exempt Clubs shall remain at five and the Clubs qualifying for the UEFA Club Competitions shall be augmented by the next highest placed Club or Clubs in The Scottish Premier League at the end of the preceding season.

    3. For the First Round the thirty lowest placed clubs of The Scottish Football League and The Scottish Premier League at the end of the preceding season, which are not participating in the UEFA Club Competitions, will play a single tie on the ground of the first named club. This Round will be “seeded” and the “seeds” will be the fifteen highest placed clubs at the end of the preceding season. The fifteen winning clubs will qualify to play in the Second Round.

    4. For the Second Round, the seven lowest placed clubs of The Scottish Premier League at the end of the preceding season will be inserted into a ballot with the winners from the First Round. The eleven winning clubs will qualify to play in the Third Round.

    5. For the Third Round, the five clubs, which are participating in the UEFA Club Competitions together with the eleven clubs qualifying from the Second Round, will then be inserted into a ballot. This Round will be “seeded” with the clubs occupying the eight highest positions at the end of the preceding season being “seeded”. These clubs will play a single tie on the ground of the first named club. The eight winning clubs will qualify to play in the Fourth Round.

    6. In the event that six clubs qualify for UEFA Club Competitions, those six clubs will be exempt from playing in the Competition until the Third Round.

    7. For the First Round the thirty-two lowest placed clubs of The Scottish Football League and The Scottish Premier League at the end of the preceding season, which are not participating in the UEFA Club Competitions, will play a single tie on the ground of the first named club. 8. For the Second Round, the four lowest placed clubs of The Scottish Premier League at the end of the preceding season will be inserted into a ballot with the winners from the First Round. This Round will be “seeded” and the “seeds” will be the ten highest placed clubs at the end of the preceding season. Those clubs will play a single tie on the ground of the first named club. The ten winning clubs will qualify to play in the Third Round.

These clubs will play a single tie on the ground of the first named club. The eight winning clubs will qualify to play in the Fourth Round.

    10. For the Fourth Round in either event, the eight winning Clubs will be inserted into an “unseeded” ballot. These Clubs will play a single tie on the ground of the first named Club. The four winning clubs will qualify for the Semi-Final Round.

    11. For the Semi-Final Round, the four winning clubs will be inserted into an “unseeded” ballot and each Semi-Final Tie shall be a one match tie played on a date and venue decided by the Management Committee. The two winning Clubs will qualify for the Final Tie.

    12. For the purposes of this Rule, in determining the highest placed Club, the Clubs in The Scottish Premier League shall be deemed to be higher than the Clubs in The Scottish Football League at the end of the preceding season.

    13. In the First, Second, Third, Fourth and Semi-Final Rounds, if the scores are equal at the end of the ninety minutes, an extra thirty minutes will be played and, if still undecided, the winner shall be ascertained by taking kicks from the penalty mark as laid down by the International Board.

    14. The Final Tie will be contested on a date and venue decided by the Management Committee.

    15. In the event of the Final Tie resulting in a draw, an extra thirty minutes will be played and, thereafter, if necessary, the winner shall be ascertained by taking kicks from the penalty mark as laid down by the International Board.

  24. Some of the criticism of PL is way over the top.

We have a sensible strategy: buy young, talented players and look to move them on at a profit. We should have been doing this years ago.

The problem is the calendar of European football works against us. Alone amongst last year’s CL clubs we are being forced to play critical games when everyone else is still on the beach. Sure, we’d like to sign players by the end of June, and move others on so we are ready for these July matches… but everyone else is still on holiday.

Despite that we have signed 2 (hopefully) good players – Balde and Van Djck.

I think sometimes people have a completely unrealistic appreciation of how UEFA’s structures work against us.

    Good morning CQNers,

It beggars belief that some would believe Gary Hooper’s departure isn’t part of a planned strategy, if we hadn’t qualified for the last 16 he’d have gone in the last January window.

I’m looking forward to welcoming our new striker some time today.

  27. I blame PL! Both Vic and Hoops begged to stay and rumour has it they were not interested in money. Imagine not being able to go to likes of Inverness at Christmas time. PL just wanted to get a big bonus!!!!

  28. Murdochbhoy, yermanfromMK on

I’ve just seen the new SPFL logo, how long did it take for the marketing men to find the appropriate image that is backward looking and sticking its tongue out?

    Is somebody having a laugh?

  29. A Stor Mo Chroi on

Victor Wanyama declined to sign an improved contract, ditto, Gary Hooper. No doubt Celtic have a salary structure of some sort and were not prepared to put it aside to accommodate the monetary demands of those two players, if indeed money was their primary motivator.

Maybe both players just wanted to move on, it happens; maybe both players just were not happy in Glasgow, it happens; maybe both players just didn’t believe that Celtic could match their professional ambitions.

Players now are often nothing more than contractors, with a few exceptions. I don’t believe for one moment that any player at Celtic would have the arrogance to have it written into their contracts that they must be the highest paid player at the club. Can anybody really believe any club, or company, would humour such a demand, such arrogance, such stupidity, for even a second?

Both big Vic and the Hooperman were up front and honest in their dealings with Celtic and all credit to them for their honesty and bottle. In leaving, they have more than justified Celtic’s initial investment in them and neither of them did anything less than serve the club and the support with pride and pleasure. Pound for pound they were both more than worth it.

It is not their leaving that finds us wanting, they gave a long notice period, Celtic have not, to date, replaced either of them with inspiring signings. That is not to say that some who remain at Celtic won’t step up to the plate and that some that Celtic have brought in, or might bring in, might, with time, be proved better than those who departed.

Celtic is acknowledged as a young team. Young teams will do better with seasoned pro’s along side them.

Celtic is not skint. If Celtic get past Elfsborg then they will not have a banana skin waiting for them, they will have a competent football club to face whose sole purpose will be to knock Celtic out of the competition.

    They will not be Cliftonville.

Bundles of cash in the bank will still be bundles of cash in the bank, and nothing more. No magic nights under the floodlights, no drunken marathons with the mates to write an incredible and indelible memory that will be passed, with pride and joy, to generations yet to be born.

The day I see a Celtic Supporter in a replica strip with “loads of money” emblazoned across the back… that’s the day I chuck it.

Hail! Hail! The statements here, what the hell do we care….

I was just joking when I said “me”…….!!

  31. When Hooper refused the new contract offers it was time to have a replacement lined up.

We really need a genuine proven goalscorer to help progress in CL. Gambling on a project could cost CL revenue.

The “buy young and cheap” policy is good and has merit, but there should be the occasional exception.

  32. Reading back a lot of animosity on the blog last night. The moonhowlers were out in force!

Lets see who we bring in today, Dorrans from West Brom would be a good acquisition as an auxilliary Kris Commons type player, the Baggies fans I know rate him highly.

Striker, anyone but Doyle please, non scoring strikers we don’t need thankyou.

  33. The recurring theme about this liquidity (cash) CFC have in the bank is that we should “speculate to accumulate”……..

We tried this model under MON and although we had a measure of success it took us years to get our books in order…….

    Just saying like……

  34. Been listening to Snyde the last few weeks early morning whilst driving around, various news reports on sevco’s pre season results, 3,4 and 5 wins in a row etc

No mention this morning that they were even playing last night never mind the result.

Still being controlled by media house?

Morning Bhoys and Ghirls, long time no see.

I have a wee favour to ask sometime between now and the autumn next year I’ll be looking to take the ferry over and take my dad and one of his mates (who I also know and who helped me out recently with my first place) to do a bit of Salmon Fishing. And was wondering if anyone had any hints/tips/general advice. I literally am at ground zero when it comes to planning this (so no month/location) – I know he’d read an article last year about a river that was open earlier (possibly later but think it was earlier) than normal (feb I think) and from memor it was south east coast.

But if anyone has any general advice – would probably like about 4-6 days all in, so maybe 2-3 on one spot and another 2-3 in another – maybe one being value the other quality….

    Cheers for any help
