Getting a good manager job

351

When Gordon Strachan left Celtic in 2009 the overwhelming calls on CQN were for the club to go for broke and appoint Davie Moyes as manager. Again last year, when we were replacing Ronny Deila, Davie and Brendan Rodgers were Celtic’s top choices for the job.

This week Davie, one of the most awful central defenders to have played for Celtic in my time, underwhelmed West Ham fans when given the job of rescuing them from relegation.

Davie did well in his first managerial job at Preston, then rescued Everton from the failing hands of Walter Smith, taking the club on an 11-year run of what is regarded as success around those parts. Throughout his Everton era he was a hot prospect. The Manchester United job was his four years ago, but little has gone his way since. He left Old Trafford, Real Sociedad and Sunderland under a cloud in quick succession.

We could have had him before Sunderland last year and we would have been delighted at the appointment too. It may even have worked out well. Despite that, I don’t expect him to inspire West Ham to midfield mediocrity. The West Ham job is one of many wonderfully well-paid bad jobs in England. They may avoid relegation, but Davie will never be liked.

Brendan Rodgers will receive regular calls from representatives of West Ham-like clubs, with plenty of money but little hope of success. The Celtic job is far from perfect, but there are few better gigs.

This “QUARK” Rae is clearly NO Right in the Heid !

Rangers are a club who win and lose with dignity and the board need to get that back to Ibrox – Alex Rae

Former Gers star insists correct boss appointment is critical to return the standards expected down Govan way and the board can’t afford to get another manager wrong.

Dignity. It’s a word that used to be considered as integral a part of the language at Rangers as ‘winning’ and ‘trophies’.

But in these recent turbulent years for the Ibrox club Alex Rae has watched in horror as all three have become increasingly distant from the club he loves.

That’s why he believes the next managerial appointment the board makes is critical to getting, not only the team back on track, but the whole club back to the basic principles that defined Rangers for so long.

That’s why he insists there can be no more shots in the dark like the previous two managers Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha, who Rae reckons arrived without a full understanding of the relentlessly high standards demanded in Govan.

Rae believes Rangers need people at the club who understand everything it stands for

Rae believes Rangers need people at the club who understand everything it stands for

This time it has to be a figure who knows the club’s ways and commands respect by upholding the long held traditions and expectations of a club that he fears has lost its way.

As a former player, Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes would certainly fit that bill for Rae – but there is another who he would love to see return to the Ibrox dugout for a second spell.

The treble-winning manager who made it clearer than anyone to Rae exactly what it means to play for Rangers on the day he got caught up in the moment and slipped below the standards of dignity expected.

Speaking on Record Sport Online’s Rangers Podcast, Rae said: “We won an Old Firm game 2-0 at Ibrox and I was waiting to shake Neil Lennon’s hand when Martin O’Neill grabbed him and took him to the Broomloan Stand to greet the Celtic supporters.

“So I thought ‘hold up, I shook their hand when we got beat at Parkhead so I’m going to wait for the both of them’.

“So I shook their hands and then looked up to a fellah I know in the main stand – a big Rangers man from the East End – and I went ‘ya effin beauty’.

Rae was given a dressing down by Alex McLeish for celebrating at the end of an Old Firm win

Rae was given a dressing down by Alex McLeish for celebrating at the end of an Old Firm win

“Big Alex was also waiting at the end of the tunnel to shake hands with Martin and saw this.

“So later he came into the dressing room, gave me a big bear hug and said ‘don’t let me see you do that again. We win and lose with dignity. This is Glasgow Rangers.’

“Now I was 35 at the time but I was like a wee boy going ‘aye, you’re right gaffer’. But it was a brilliant thing to say. It’s about how you carry yourself and how you behave. It’s Rangers that you’re representing.

“Alex understood the importance of that and he made sure everyone else did too.

“One of the key things at the beginning of my first season, which was brilliant, was when all the players were given a leather binder with the history of the club inside.

“It told you where the club started, where it was first situated and it had two DVDs giving a run down from the black-and-white days through to winning the Cup Winners’ Cup and John Greig then on to nine-in-row and all the Trebles that the club have won.

“So all of a sudden you’ve got an understanding of what the club’s about – and then at the back there was a Code of Conduct listing what it takes to be a Rangers player and what you represent. It was outstanding.

“I felt as if I already knew because I’d followed the team as a supporter and been at the club as an apprentice as a boy. But you can’t understand the dynamics until you play for them.

“I’d played 650 first-team games but then I got up to Rangers and realised what pressure is.

“In your mind you think you know what it’s all about. But until you actually start experiencing it, you lose your first Old Firm game and you’re getting scudded all over the place by TV pundits, journalists and fans? Only then do you know what the pressure of the goldfish bowl is like.

Rae believes Mark Warburton didn’t quite understand the dynamic at Rangers

Rae believes Mark Warburton didn’t quite understand the dynamic at Rangers

“That need to win on a weekly basis has to be transferred from the leader of the club through to the players.

“And that message has been diluted in recent years because we’ve had managers who didn’t understand the dynamics at Rangers.

“You look at Mark Warburton when he came in, if they got a draw he would speak positively about how they dominated the game.

“He couldn’t quite grasp the fact that a draw wasn’t good enough – it was a rude awakening for these guys.

“When you look at Pedro Caixinha’s quotes and some of the stories coming out – it was the right decision for him to go.

“Last year the youths at Rangers got to a final and the attitude was that this group of players were over-achieving.

“I’d never heard that in all my time at Rangers, stretching right back to my days there as a kid.

“They need to get back to believing they’re the best because if you keep telling people they are second best they’ll believe it.

“The quicker we get back to those high standards the better we’ll be able to compete with Celtic.

“This is a really important time for the Rangers board because they really need to get it right on the back of these two previous appointments.

“They need to get back to basics by bringing in someone who knows the club and McInnes would be a safe pair of hands who would bring stability.

“But having worked with big Alex McLeish I know what he’d bring.

“When you look at his achievements in England – a top nine finish in the Premier League and also winning the League Cup with Birmingham – it speaks for itself.

“But whoever comes in will have a difficult job and that’s why it needs to be someone who really understands the responsibility he’s taking on.

“It goes back to what I was saying about the book they gave us. It’s Rangers you’re representing.”

My own particular favourite was the one where Quark (love it!) said about big Eckie McLeish “When you look at his achievements in England – a top nine finish in the Premier League and also winning the League Cup with Birmingham – it speaks for itself.” THAT would be a great appointment, so it would.

  20. Re My Post @ 7.52…..the QUARK Rae…….

Now I can not prove whether ” The Quark Rae” is LYING at the so called Ranjurs ” LEATHER BINDED BOOK”…..or any other kind of book, but I phoned an auld Bluenose pal of mine this very morn, who’s in his late 50’s…He’s NEVER heard of any Oldco/Newco player ever getting a “Book” ?

Personally, I think the book must have been a “Colouring In Book”…or the Ranjurs News ?

Why is it that after ALL these years NO OTHER Oldco/Newco player has ever mentioned this “Book”…to the best of my knowledge ?…..oh and my Bluenose pal has never heard of it before.

Again, why bother to mention that it was made of “Leather”….who feckin cares ? Is the present “Book” made from Blue Peter Sticky Back Plastic cos their skint ?

IF such a”Book” ever existed I would someone to ask “The Quark” to give examples of what instructions are stated in it…in fact even better..The Quark SHOULD PRODUCE “The Book” next time he’s getting paid big bucks by the media, I’m sure most of the Hun support would LOVE to see this “Book” ?

    ” The Ranjurs Remit Book”,

    4) When being interviewed by anyone, NEVER Slag off any Ranjurs player and/or employee…no matter how shite they are.

    5) IF the media ever mention our Bigoted and Racist song sheet….ALWAYS claim that you have NEVER heard any such singing and chanting from the Ranjurs support….even after you have just told the media ” How wonderful the Ranjurs support were today, and how they NEVER stopped singing and backing the Ranjurs all thru the game”.. ( Smith and McCoist were FAMOUS for such denials live on TV).

    6) At ALL times, no matter how badly the Ranjurs have played on any given day….blame the Fenian in the Black, The Pope….and Tony Roper !

    7) Learn how to FAKE injury ( especially from Phantom Headbutts and Elbows) from opposition players…especially they Fenian Bassa’s.

    8) ALWAYS fully DENY being feckin UGLY !

    9) learn how to say ” We are the Peepil” feckin backwards.

    10) At ALL times deny all knowledge of Administration, Liquidation, Cheating,,Lying, Not paying Taxes…no paying anyone …..whenever speaking to the media, the smsm will respect you more for that.

Above are just some possible “Ranjurs Instructions” that would be viewed as part of your feckin contract with the Ranjurs.
