Goal shyness hampers Celtic

Overall I was pleased with many aspects of Celtic’s play yesterday.  We dominated large parts of the game and got in and around the Hearts penalty area often enough to score the proverbial barrel load.

Hearts scored a good goal.  The flick from Beattie and run from Skacel were both exquisite, although a deflection off the blameless Kelvin Wilson was crucial.  Enough has been said about the second Hearts goal already.  Defensively we were good.

Midfield also played well, to a point, forcing Hearts into retreat for all but the opening 20 minutes of the second half.  Ki Sung-Yueng should have scored twice but he’s never been a player for back post headers and I was more surprised he found himself in that position than he missed both opportunities.  He is a player who continues to impress.

The question we should turn our attention to is why Celtic didn’t score more goals?

It is probably not an exaggeration to suggest Emilio Izaguirre is the best left back at the club in 30 years.  Skilful and intelligent in possession, Celtic look composed when he is on the field, but he’s being kept out of the team by a free transfer from Aberdeen because Charlie Mulgrew is manufacturing the most crucial item in the game – goals.

I’m close to advocating ‘Give the ball to Charlie’ tactics.  He has the ability to fire in remarkably dangerous crosses and has an instinctive awareness that the purpose of the game is to score goals.  Kris Commons shares this awareness but Kris has had a wretched season and is still rescuing his game from injury and early season loss of form.

In these circumstances, Neil Lennon cannot afford to play Izaguirre if it involves dropping Mulgew as this would severely hamper Celtic’s ability to put the ball in the net.  If the manager wants to use Emilio, particularly in Europe next season when retaining possession will be crucial, Charlie has to play left midfield.

Scoring goals is the primary responsibility of the strikers.  None of Celtic’s current crop are impressing at the moment, but we need to look further upstream first.

We have an outstanding original canvass painting of Neil Lennon available for purchase on eBay to kick start our summer charity fundraising. This year the beneficiaries will be Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, Martin Chambers Foundation and The Neuroblastoma Alliance, Aberdour PS PTA, The Haven, Blantyre. The painting, by US based artist, Joseph Gormley, is an outstanding memento of our manager during these times.

”Halfwit pretending she is a Celtic fan on Snyde!!”

    I suspect she’s a Celtic fan.

But there’s a bovine element among the support who don’t have the wit to think for themselves, never mind question the mindset that dominates the agenda in Scottish football.

Aye like i said Halfwits :D

Lennon is a lamb to the slaughter tonight,,,Keevins says Lenny conduct is unbecoming of someone who is the Manager of one of the big 3 jobs in Scotland(Celtic ,The Huns,,and Scotland)

Funny i dont remember Keevins tearing Sir Wattie Myth a new one when he charged into the Hibs technical area at Mordor and tried to attack big Mixu!!

    Hail hail

  3. I really believe that I will soon be doing a 15 stretch in the BarL if I hear another person say that Hooper goal was CLEARLY offside!!! I had to listen to radio shortbread in work…the amount of times i was told the goal was offside after the game AND the number of times I was told Hearts deserved to win the game! By the time i got to the hoose fae the work i was told by a number of huns that it was a stonewall penalty & Hoopers goal was MILES offside! The insistence on telling the listener on shortbread about the “offside” goal after the game seemed so choreograped & unanimous that it sounded like a script. So by the time i got home to watch it I was totally shocked at how completely add odds it was with my expectations! If hooper was offside it was by a fag paper when it left Chaz’s peg…clearly not MILES offside…as for the penalty- where do you begin? Nonetheless I thought we played well enough and created enough good chances to have won the game comfortably ( which seems to contradict all the drivel spouted about Sergios tactical genius).

    I just hate the MSM.

  6. SFA led by Campbell Ogilvie to set up a new league? Well that will be all fair and above board, won’t it?

And I suppose they will just invite a few selected teams to be in the top division based on some spurious criteria?

  7. New SFA Premier League to be based the Campbell Ogilvie League and sponsored by EBT.

Rangers have not only been accepted into the league but have been awarded the first Championship.

There will be no fit and proper test, no need to declare contracts or audited accounts. No sanctions for insolvency.

Referrees will be chosen by the rangers manager for all fixtures……..

Another attack on Lennie by that bigot Dallas the fact he is still involved in football shows how corupt the game is. I am 100% behind Lennie it was never a penalty and Norris was not consistant. He either is an incompetant ref or a cheat take your pick my own feelings are that he is a cheat.H.H.

  9. Steinreignedsupreme on

Lenny didn’t grab anyone by the collar – like Myth did with Paatelainen, and he didn’t punch anyone like Broon did with the Finish boy.

Still, I’m not sure what he thought could be achieved by walking on to the pitch to confront the Mason.

But given that Lenny is not stupid, I’m wondering if there was another reason for his actions – maybe looking at the bigger picture and what lies ahead involving the bodies that try to run Scottish football.

So the SFA are going to set up a whole new league

have they been watching for the reaction to the CHEATS CHARTER or have they found they can’t bend the rules enough to get the crooks 11 back in to the top league .

What if we start a new league and get all the honest teams to apply and then let newco in at the same time

Please ,please Celtic get us a league out of this country ASAP .

Craig Brown punches the chairman of a Danish team on the touchline during a Europa League qualifier. No adverse comment from the press.

Craig Brown tries to attack Motherwell chairman John Boyle after Boyle gestured at him on the touchline in Brown`s first game at Fir Park as Aberdeen manager. No adverse comment from the press.

Then Hearts manager John Robertson kicks opposition manager Czaba Laszlo on the touchline during a UEFA Cup match. No adverse comment from the press.

Falkirk manager Steven Pressley walks on the Hampden pitch at half time to confront the referee to question a decision. No adverse comment from the press.

Neil Lennon questions a referee on the pitch at full time. Press outrage. Bring back the death penalty. Sack the man, tar him, feather him, Jabba and Keevins and the other trumpets of the Laptop Loyal say it must be so.

    Good afternoon Guys,

I have been reading the comments with interest after the disapointment of the week end, I must say that having seen most of the central defenders play, i would have to agree with several post on here, that our best pairing is Rogne and Mulgrew. Izzy has to be 1 fullback with Mathews on the other side. In midfield we miss Kayal badly. My best 11 going forward would be as follows,

    Mathews Rogne Mulgrew Izzy

    Brown Wanyama Kayal Ledley Samaras

Subs Forrest Ki Lustig Stokes Loovens.

I must also say i was disapointed with Neil Lennons reaction at the end. Celtic managers should show a little dignity and composure under such circumstances. I do accept he was very disapointed as we all were. But Guys at the end of the day we were not good enough.

  23. Joe Filippis Haircut on

We Celtic supporters must just not support Neil Lennon we must show him and the media that we are in full support of him. They are out to have him nailed lets get right behind him at our next match and show that he has our trust.H.H.
