Griffiths deliveries, Shved raw materials, Cluj

242

Still a long way to go, but there’s a sharpness about Celtic that is very reassuring.  Nomme Kalju were unable to make anything of their Champions League qualification tie with Celtic in front of their own fans last night, while Neil Lennon must have been delighted at what he saw throughout the team.

Marian Shved’s added time goal gave us an insight into why Celtic signed the player, who turned 22 this month.  He has pace to burn and an end product.  There is a lot more to the modern game, and it will take a while before we see him fully integrate into the team, but the raw materials are clear to see.

One notable aspect of this tie was the quality of dead-balls from Leigh Griffiths.  Last week’s free kick aside, his corners arrive in the box at pace and a height that created opportunities.  Chris Jullien should have made more of one in particular, but he can be very satisfied with his competitive Celtic debut.

My feeling is that Cluj caught Maccabi Tel-Aviv unprepared.  The Israelis have played half as much football as the Romanians this season. Having knocked out two higher seeds, Cluj will face Celtic next Wednesday with nothing to fear.  We should progress, but this tie will be a necessary step-up in pace ahead of the play-off round, which starts in three weeks.

The relaxed days of summer are over.  Between now and 1 September we play four league games, four European qualifiers and a League Cup tie.  If you check the calendar, cup finals happen in March and May, but the real ones take place in the coming weeks.  Be ready, Celtic.

  1. An Dun – apart from it being a stupid strategy in and of itself, the fact that they did a deal on a major revenue stream for any normal football club that turned the stream in to a trickle, leaves me thinking that King has no intention of trying to compete with Celtic. He just doesn’t care. There is more going on than we know. Perhaps the Ibrox franchise is a useful conduit for certain streams of cash that otherwise couldn’t be moved – who knows.

From day one, well before Dodgy Dave got his criminally grubby paws on the franchise, the whole thing was not set up to be a successful football club. Remember the onerous contracts? It’s a cash cow for someone. It just needs the odd bit of theatre now and then to keep the village idiots turning up to keep the accounts looking realistic. But that’s just conspiracy theory on my part. Maybe they are real Rangers (sic) men and maybe they just are that spectacularly stupid and incompetent. Either way, providing Celtic do their business in the transfer market, they are no threat to us.

My desire is to watch the newco die and for a couple of the other clubs to siege the opportunity to become proper challengers. If Hibs or Aberdeen ever get their act together we’d have a really healthy footballing product to enjoy in Scotland

Indeed. I have already asked the question re financial assistance. If not required , then maybe a collection for something to commemorate Charlie’s life from his CQN family may be appropriate. I will ask the family for guidance in due course

  15. Celtic Park holds close to 61,000 maxed out. Season ticket sales are limited to 53,000, though season ticket holders have preference to buy additional tickets for CL group stage matches, if we get there, but must buy a group package either way. For SPL matches there is always a general sale for all home games including, since last season against one of our Glasgow rivals. The number of tickets available varies with the opposition, but Celtic to their credit publicise ticket sales weeks in advance and these can be bought online, in person by Celtic supporters/visitors for sections 116,117,118 and sometimes 119, and 120. St Johnstone will be allocated part of section 121. It is a good system allowing non season ticket holders, families, and visiting groups, or visitors generally the opportunity to see the Bhoys live. Concessions available in all the sections mentioned. Not all games sell out completely, but some do.

I do know that when my da passed that the messages here were a source of comfort to me and my mum especially. Please know that we’re all thinking and praying for you mate.
