Griffiths deliveries, Shved raw materials, Cluj

242

Still a long way to go, but there’s a sharpness about Celtic that is very reassuring.  Nomme Kalju were unable to make anything of their Champions League qualification tie with Celtic in front of their own fans last night, while Neil Lennon must have been delighted at what he saw throughout the team.

Marian Shved’s added time goal gave us an insight into why Celtic signed the player, who turned 22 this month.  He has pace to burn and an end product.  There is a lot more to the modern game, and it will take a while before we see him fully integrate into the team, but the raw materials are clear to see.

One notable aspect of this tie was the quality of dead-balls from Leigh Griffiths.  Last week’s free kick aside, his corners arrive in the box at pace and a height that created opportunities.  Chris Jullien should have made more of one in particular, but he can be very satisfied with his competitive Celtic debut.

My feeling is that Cluj caught Maccabi Tel-Aviv unprepared.  The Israelis have played half as much football as the Romanians this season. Having knocked out two higher seeds, Cluj will face Celtic next Wednesday with nothing to fear.  We should progress, but this tie will be a necessary step-up in pace ahead of the play-off round, which starts in three weeks.

The relaxed days of summer are over.  Between now and 1 September we play four league games, four European qualifiers and a League Cup tie.  If you check the calendar, cup finals happen in March and May, but the real ones take place in the coming weeks.  Be ready, Celtic.

What can anyone say at a time like this. It all seems so inadequate. All I can offer you is my prayers and the love in my heart. It’s all I’ve got. And they are all yours at this moment.

  5. I enclose a link to r well written article about the relationship between Boards and managers, this time referencing Spurs. I am not convinced that the role of Maurice Tiny Pockets at Spurs has changed much since he joined but he has decided to dog whistle his displeasure to the Spurs support.

I pose the question- Is this because

    a) It’s exactly the same problem as that between PL and Celtic managers- & we need to get back to the 60s and 70s with real football men in charge of millions and multi-millions.

    b) Pochettino wants to have his responsibilities widened to have more of a say in transfers than he has had in the past.

    c) Pochettino is letting the fans know that Daniel Levy is encroaching more and more onto his turf.

or d) A come and get me plea to Man U, Real, Bayern, Barcelona or PSG.

I suspect many posters will favour options a) and c) but I am not so sure it isn’t d).

SFTB – you pose some decent questions there. Tiny Pockets presser caught the eye…….and the attention of the media. While knowing nowt about his motivations or the goings on at The Tottingham Potentate, I’m a firm believer that the simplest answer is usually the right one…..(usually). The fitba’ presser can be a great platform for any manager to directly promote his own personal agenda – fast and effective with the additional opportunity of a wee bit of “theatre” to get the punters noised-up…………

To answer your question – I’m going for D). I’m guessin’ the wee fella with appropriate sized pockets but big aspirations might fancy a BIG move.

    :)

Now, transpose this theatricality over to Glasgow Celtic Town and I’m guessin’ the big picture moves from Theatre To Pantomime…………….with Big Bulgin’ Pockets Pedro cast as the panto villain and Sharegrabber Dermot as Demonic Bad Guy Baron Gradgrind!?

    Mrs Brown’s Bhoys?

  7. Moving forward, I hope Lenny doesn’t see Scott Brown as a fundamental starter every game.

To do both Brown and the Team justice, his 50+ appearances last season in all competitions, should be halved in season 19/20.

Plenty scope I believe for the best midfield 3 in Scotland, of : McGregor, Ntcham, and Christie

And that’s without being disrespectful to Brown, who has been nothing other than an absolute legend through the years.

There is not a chance his appearances will be halved (unless due to injury, morphing into Morelos and getting suspended every week, etc) but yes I think he should be utilised a bit less. Rogic to come back too – lots of options in centre mid.

He does however give us a bit of much needed dig which no one else really does – a no nonsense DM wouldnt go amiss to help us out and give us another option.

McGregor and Christie need to be used wisely as well.

McGregor, in particular, has blossomed into a truly class player and I feel Christie is about to follow suit this season.

Absolutely, hopefully lots of scope to bring players off in league matches after 65/70 mins if we’re looking comfortable.

Certain home games we could rotate a little as well to give those most in need a rest. Can’t afford to much rotation though, leads to loss of cohesion and by definition you’re probably bringing in someone with less quality and experience.

Definitely a balancing act though – particularly considering we’re looking good for group stage European football of some sort until Christmas.

No need for those ticket prices for qualifying rounds. As someone suggested before they should be fixed priced, say £20, until in the proper CL

  19. glendalystonsils on

It seems like the good old SMSM can’t resist seeking out or regurgitating disrespectful comments from anyone remotely connected with our European opponents . Maybe they’re getting worried that KT might stay and want to try another sleekit line of attack.

  20. I think a lot of fans have lost contact with ticket prices today. £26 for adults, £14 for concessions and £9 for under 13s is very reasonable when compared to ticket prices in general.

My sister was telling me about £170 tickets she paid for a concert!! My wife paid £90 for pink at hampden.

Celtic have just taken money in for ST sales and £24.50 last match when you take into account booking fee

The same again and there could be potentially another qualifying match(hopefully)
