Hard work, fans and Celtic with focus

I love Paris, the food, the sights, the people, the atmosphere of the place.  So it came as a surprise when I watched Messi and Neymar booed by their own PSG fans after their elimination from the Champions League.  The greatest of all time and a talented show pony, both the toast of the city recently, as persona non grata.  How can it be?

The short version of events is that PSG were eliminated because neither did enough running around against Real Madrid to prevent their elimination.  This is a bit unfair.  A shark is a shark.  If you swim with one, you should know how it will behave.

When it comes to energy, Messi, for all his exalted status, is more Charlie Nicholas than Frank McGarvey.  His Brazilian protégée, Neymar, was always going to behave like his master.  Maybe Messi’s game would be hampered, if he put in the hard miles, I doubt he ever found out.

I also doubt Leo has seen the best of Paris: the Tower, Montmartre, Sacre Coeur.  No matter how long he stays, he will remain an unknown recluse, inevitably leaving behind fans who wonder what they were initially thinking.  Still, booing your own after a defeat?  It’s not a good look.   A PSG decline, without the prize they really want, seems inevitable.

It hurt when Bodo/Glimt taught us a lesson home and away last month.  Having already eliminated AZ Alkmaar from one European competition this season, we would feel hopeful of doing so again, if we faced them in the Conference League, instead of Bogo/Glimt.

There are compensations, primarily our hunt for the league title.  Instead of journeys to Netherlands, all the focus at Lennoxtown this week is on facing Ross County at Celtic Park on Saturday.  It has been a while since we were this confident.

I wonder if I misjudged them earlier and they are actually a very good football team?”

I am not being wise after the event ( Honest!) but I thought Bodo were a very good side( against us) who could go far in this tournament.

Vital that we don’t risk long term pain for short term gain.

I imagine him scoring the league winning goal somewhere. A cross between Henke, in Jansen season, and Naka down at rugby park. All I have to do is close my eyes……

  11. So the laptop loyal are still on about hatati,s tackle. Still pushing for the guy to be suspended , but still no evening up with the tackles put into our lads of which there are many . But today at the press conference those same sectarian bigots will be welcomed with open arms , why are these people who hate our club allowed anywhere near our club in the first place , it’s time no it’s well over time they were told to leave there press passes at the door . I was also on that Celtic newsnow . Nearly all those sites contained reference to the daily ranger . Or other well known anti Celtic rags , if I wanted to know what those chip wrappers were saying I would buy one it’s time it was stopped . Fergie at Man Utd showed how it should be done ,get them told ange .

  12. AT, thats a good perspective on the wee fella. I’m like a kid at Christmas waiting for his return.

  13. Cut the bickering — what about the fitba !?!

    Our EuL group …

Failure continues — this time in the EuL knock out rounds.

3rd in Germany gets beat by 7th in Italy.

5th in Spain gets beat by 9th in Germany

Meanwhile 2nd in Serbia gets beaten by 2nd in Scotland.

Plus a young guy many don’t rate is a rising star for a team that is 12th in Italy.

And in the EuConL our conquerors — who made it look all too easy — from Norway need ET to beat a team who are 12th in Holland / sorry the Netherlands.

Is this just down to bad luck or are we flat track SPL bullies?

I would suggest that we have a huge amount of work to do.

What is our place in Euro football:

    1-50?

    51-100?

    101+

And where do we want to be?

Are we only trying to win the SPL for the CL cash?

Local bragging rights comes before football quality — discuss?

    Huge decisions ahead?

More blame needed to be dumped on PL.

  14. How did the club fare on this day in the past?

    1893

The club was first in action on this day back in March 1893, with Celtic scoring five in a one-sided league victory over Dumbarton. The Sons of the Rock had at that point only recently emerged from a difficult period in where their very existence was threatened, largely by their reluctance to embrace professionalism. But there was no quarter given in this 5-1 thumping at Celtic Park. Lightning fast centre-back Jimmy Kelly was on the score-sheet for Celtic that day, as were inside-right Jimmy Blessington and Michael Mulvey (who scored four goals in four appearances during his brief stay at the club). Stand-in striker, James ‘Tooty’ Davidson (below) also scored a double, with Celtic going on to win the second championship of the club’s history in some style that season.

  15. 1905

Three great Celts all made their international debuts for Scotland in a 4-0 victory over Ireland in Glasgow. The trio of Jimmy ‘Napoleon’ McMenemy, Peter Somers and the ‘Mighty’ Jimmy Quinn just happened to make-up one of the club’s most talented front-lines, with the selfless Somers and tireless Napoleon setting up a healthy portion of Quinn’s 216 goals in 331 appearances for the club. It was perhaps no surprise then that the Bhoy from Croy netted on this Scotland debut against Ireland. Quinn was recognised as the greatest centre-forward of his day and went on to win 11 caps for Scotland. McMenemy won 12 during his 15-year international career, with Somers called up four times in six years.

Here we take the opportunity to revisit some Celtic games and tales from this day in the club’s past.

    1933

A nail-biting 90 minutes against Hearts at Hampden set-up a Scottish Cup semi-final replay with the Edinburgh club. Played against a backdrop of depression and recession, it was a difficult time for the country, but not one that was reflected in the attendances at Celtic games, with supporters reportedly walking to games played in Aberdeen and Dundee. This 0-0 draw with Hearts watched by 87,000 was followed by a dramatic replay four days later, with Alex Thomson and Jimmy McGrory scoring in a 2-1 win in front of 63,756. McGrory then brought the cup back to Celtic Park with his solitary strike against Motherwell in the April final as 102,339 looked on.

  17. 1942

The prodigiously talented Pat McAuley returned to Celtic Park on this day, agreeing terms with the club he left on a free transfer a year earlier. Looking back through Celtic history, the praise flows for this outstanding left-half, with McAuley described as ‘a football artist’, ‘a player of high culture’ and ‘the foundation stone’ for many of Celtic’s victories. His only misfortune was to play for the club during its ‘direst war years’, where he was at times alone in his quality.

  18. 1950

Another outstanding talent made his Celtic debut on this day, with Willie Fernie (below) enjoying his first start in a 1-0 win over St Mirren. The inside-forward was blessed with extraordinary ability on the ball and the kind of lightning pace which made him a nightmare for defenders at home and abroad. ‘Scotland’s Stanley Matthews’ was the moniker given to him by one newspaperman and his long-stride made him immediately recognisable on the park, as did his weaving, jinking runs. He was a player capable of winning matches single-handedly, but he also contributed in one of the club’s greatest team triumphs when Celtic beat Rangers 7-1 in the 1957 League Cup final at Hampden.

  19. 1967

In the midst of a European Cup campaign that would eventually lead to Lisbon and the ultimate triumph, Celtic were also battling to retain the league title they had won the previous year for the first time in 12 years. And on March 18, 1967, they faced Dunfermline Athletic at home. The Hoops got off to the best possible start with a Stevie Chalmers goal in the third minute. Alex Ferguson reduced the deficit on 19 minutes, but a Tommy Gemmell penalty two minutes later restored Celtic’s lead. And Willie Wallace made it 3-1 just before half-time. Ferguson scored his second for the Pars late in the game, but the three points remained in Paradise

There can be little doubt that we are the second best glasgow team, when it comes to current euro form.

Whilst there are advantages to this, we must look at the cloud as well as celebrating the silver lining.

League success will undoubtedly provide additional funds to underwrite better players for Europe. However, quite why recent performances have been as they are is a concern.

The notion that domestic and euro improvements are somehow separate troubles me.

A cheap goal is a cheap goal. Defensive frailties are shown up, regardless of the currency used by the opposition.

Summary – we’re poor in Europe, though prepared to turn a blind eye for now as long as we win the league.

If we don’t, this blog and others are likely to be fraught with anger

  21. 2001

In 2001, Celtic completed the first part of the treble with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Hampden in the League Cup final. Henrik Larsson was the hat-trick hero for the Hoops on the day, netting all three goals in the second-half. And not even the dismissal of Chris Sutton on the hour mark, with Celtic only leading 1-0, could derail Martin O’Neill’s side from making history and securing only the third treble in the club’s history.

  22. 2015

Celtic played the third of four successive games inside a fortnight against Dundee United on this day in 2015. This was a Scottish Cup quarter-final replay due to a 1-1 draw 10 days earlier, and in the interim the Hoops beat the Tannadice side 2-0 in the League Cup final. The Celts won this replay 4-0 thanks to goals from Jason Denayer, Leigh Griffiths, Kris Commons and Virgil van Dijk. Just three days later in the final game of the quartet, the Celts triumphed again 3-0.

Wasn’t sure about the premise, but I do like the format, of the playlist. Colin Murray seemed to be more flexible to his listeners suggestions than his co-host John Robb who put the kaibosh on Johnny Cash’s version of 40 Shades of Green for mentioning too many places in Ireland. That said not often you hear Orbital, Fontaines DC, the Dubliners (Fields), Sinead, Luke Kelly, Thin Lizzy, Saw Doctors, Simple Minds and Christy Moore, Ian MacCullogh too, on late night Radio 5 so well done the host. If you cant’ make the game tomorrow, and I couldn’t even get tickets for Ross County, Radio 5 is doing the coverage from Celtic Park, always handy if you are driving or dont have access to Celtic TV or whatever.

If their is one thing killing CQN it is one club golfers pushing out post after post on one topic.

It can be census form analysis / historical talking points / music both good and bad / interweb conspiracy tripe.

TFOD2.1 form inconsistency is an interesting topic.

They have the incentive that if they don’t win in the EuL they don’t eat.

They are currently living off their games in the knock out stages.

Living off the gate money never mind the prize money.

Others have put forward the idea that for many in the team their good individual performances will get them a move in the summer — 4 or 5 in that position?

All the focus on the EuL matches means that there is a drop in performance in the following SPL games.

Then you have the marked drop off in form and energy of their Ludge MIB helpers — as the stats analysis on their performances becomes too much for them to carry on with their Booster Club antics.

  29. There’s reports that the huns are trying to find a loophole to get out of The Old Firm exhibition game without incurring a financial penalty. Probably just playing to the gallery, but it would be a bit of a red neck for all involved if they do pull out.

  30. MADMITCH and where do we want to be ?

Only Desmond and Nicholson can really answer that question, and have the clout to execute the plan. If there is one.

Domestic trebles are all well and good but will they be reported in El Pais, Le Monde, or Bild ? Put Barcelona out of Europe and that most definitely would be. March 2004, for example. Then Desmond and Lawwell got together and decided that wasn’t good for the profit/dividend model. Also get a board patsy onboard, let’s call him P67 for arguments sake. Assuming the “67” bit is year of birth rather than anything else with a 67 significance.

Our main rivals have a European game in April to look forward to. But, we have been hinted at, by P67, that another insolvency event is looming down Govan way. Something for us to look forward to then. And the summer fun of player trading that will turn a red number into a black one.

Can’t wait for my next £3.50 dividend to hit my bank account.
