Hartson’s anti-analysis

563

You’ve got to love John Hartson, a subscriber to the ‘All we need is three new players’ belief structure.  This is a common sort of anti-analysis which crops up regularly in place of any actual thought.

There are three outfield areas of a team, defence, midfield and attack, and if you can only improve each area, you’ll have a better team.  Go figure.  Hartson told us we need “a central defender; a creative midfield player and a striker”.  It’s as though the reality hasn’t occurred that any team in the world wouldn’t improve with the addition of a better player in each area of the field.

Yes, we need a central defender, but we need a right back too.  We need a striker, but, I could argue two strikers would be handy.  I’ve no idea how Brendan Rodgers is planning to play tactically so we might need a midfielder.  Or two.

Pretty much every team in Europe will be having the same conversation right now.  John could usefully reflect that it’s not actual headcount we need, we have the numbers, it’s players able to improve the team we need.  That’s the magic ingredient everyone in the game hopes for.

Lincoln Red Imps captain, Roy Chipolina, is well within his rights to talk up their chances of knocking Celtic out of the Champions League.  They hold the lead and it will take three goals to settle nerves among the home support tomorrow.  It could be a tense occasion…….

  1. Tonight’s game is, without doubt, the most important game of the season.

Loose and we have no European adventure this season.

Win and the possibilities for everything remain.

    Winning the tie is all.

  2. Ruggyman I agree with you down the flanks is where it could be won but we should aim to simply overwhelm them. Neganon2 do you ever post a “football” post or are we all too foolish to possibly undestand them? H H Hebcelt

  3. Good morning CQN from a humid, overcast El Campello, looking forward to tonight ‘s game and updates from here.

Prestonpans Bhoy- Happy anniversary to you and your good lady.

  4. In a brazen act of chicken counting I looked up the FC Astana team. Apparently Agim Ibraimi plays for them – formerly of the Maribor team that dumped (copyright Daily Record) Celtic out of the CL qualifiers two years ago.

Were Celtic not subsequently linked with signing him?

  5. Well turkeybhoy macjay1 was telling us there are no easy beats and I was wondering if the imps are so difficult to beat because of the sky telly deal in England (that seems to be the excuse for most things).

And given that he was earlier trotting out the old Celtic invest everything in the club (not the team mind) line that peters pay and the board awarding themselves bonuses to which they have no contractual obligation, represent reinvesting in the club?

Apologies for the spelling errors. Auto Check really has a lot to answer for.

  6. This mob should not be allowed out their own box the night.

Saying that it will prob be another EK fiasco.

  7. Incidentally I see Brendan is in the papers today telling us that it’s just so darned hard to sign players. L

Funny how every other club seems to manage it.

Oh dear. Nothing has changed at all has it. Brendan’s career is about to nosedive and all because the board want to save money. Oh and probably to make sure the league is competitive and reefs tabling the good old old firm.

Macjay 1 there are no easy beats eh? I mean how can we be expected to compete with the imps given the sky deal in England.

Incidentally does a million quid a year to law well in limpidity a nice wee non comtractual 100k bonus constitute reinvesting money in the club?

    =============================================================

Sorry . Don`t understand the first part .

Lawwell is the Board lackey. He does what he is told to do . And is paid accordingly by the Board.

How many times do you have to be told ?

  9. Hence,t my posts this morning are all about football. It just so happens that the goings on (or lack of them) off the park are a very big influence on what happens on it.

Celtic were beaten by the imps in the first competitive game of the season. We were awful last season and we have only made 1 signing this season so far. That is complacency of the highest order but is of course true to for this board.

Brendan is now trotting out the excuses that delia did last year.

    It’s pathetic.

And the same old excuses appear on this site.

Nothing it seems is being learned.

Still Peter and his chums on the board can slap their backs and give each other money they aren’t contractually entitled to.

You`ve got the wrong scapegoat .

    The P.L. syndrome.

    Pal.

    Fitba` awaits.

Let`s stick all this to one side and do what we all do best.

    Support the Tims.

  11. Macjay1 see my response to turkeybhoy.

So law well, the ceo is a lackey to the board? Have you been in board meetings before mac jay?

It is law wells job to set direction and strategy and execute it. It is the boards job to challenge that and set parameters around it. They are collectively responsible for performance.

Tell me mac jay, is it acceptable for law well to get 100k over and above what he is contractually entitled to (and to add insult to injury when Celtic are performing so poorly on the field)?and is it morally acceptable that the board do this while at the same time refusing to embrace the living wage and offering zero hours contracts?

  12. canamalar

We all get it you don’t like PL but ffs give the rest of us a break eh?

Your doing every cnuts head in man,

You know the email address , you know the email address, get aff yer arse and contact him personally and leave the rest of a break.

  13. Neganon –

Brendan is NOT making excuses for not signing players. You are twisting his words to suit your own agenda, as usual. He said he expects a couple of signings to go through over the next few days, then confirmed that the reason for the delay in making signings is because he doesn’t want to bring in anyone just for the sake of it. He said he has his own specific targets and when you work that way, sometimes it doesn’t come off.

Sounds reasonable to me, but then I’m not a one tick pony with a sad obsession.

  14. The board obviously think lawwell is carrying out his duties,

Bitching on a blog will change nowt, contact the club yourself and let them know your concerns because most on this blog are sick listening

  15. The Battered Bunnet on

By definition, it’s the Board’s function to set direction. That’s why they’re called Directors.

  16. I’m currently on hols with Mrs.HB in Croatia. Does anyone know a pub in Baska Voda where I can watch the game tonight?

I appreciate that it’s a long shot but no harm in asking?

  17. Hunderbirds are Gone on

    £5m? Grant Hanley?

Never thought I would see those two phrases in the one sentence.

The leviathan amounts of dosh swilling around the English game are going to get p***ed against the wall to spell out “agents fees”

A chance to invest huge amounts of money in facilities, performance coaches, youth academies, or whatever, and bring their national game up to the level they crave. And they will totally blow it on commissions, shareholder dividends, directors loans etc.

    The greed is good league.

  18. Hunderbirds

I quite like Hanley, typical no nonsense, get rid type centre half, although I agree we should be trying for better and DEFINATELY not £5ms worth

  19. Peter Lawwell takes some stick and in certain instances deservedly so…i.e living wage

But if you want him out be careful what you wish for…..Charles Green taking over from Craig Whyte springs to mind.

  20. For tonight I’d IMO go either 3 4 3 or 3 5 2 , the 4 3 3 didn’t work in Gib, and I doubt it will work tonight, this mob will flood the midfield so you have to win the battle in there, and then win the war, match them up man for man for respect, and then take it from there, 3 in the middle will get destroyed against they’r 5 , part timers or not, play the numbers game, and the cream will rise to the top, only my opinion.

    No thanks.

    Are you O.K., pal ?

I said “stick it to one side ”

    ie.

Put these matters aside so we can concentrate on what matters . Celtic winning tonight .

    A call to arms.

Have you forgotten what that means ?

  22. Come on bhoys I can understand some have got the jitters after last week’s debacle, but that was a freak result, they happen. Our performance, esp in the 1st half, against Wolfsburg is much more of a barometer of where we are at the moment. So all the Board and PL knockers, gies peace an get behind the team.

He deserves stick over the use of zero hours contracts and the living wage

He isn’t the boogyman and isn’t responsible for all our woes. Brendan Rodgers had enough professional and international players at his disposal to beat this mob.

If he can’t get the job done against Red Imps with the existing squad…. I’m glad its a 1 year contract

  24. Barney

There’s one or two on here that won’t get behind the team until our entire board are removed, sad really

Problem about those formations, who is going to be the three CB’s? The only thing I could imagine is Ajer, Sviatchenko & Lustig. Which is makeshift.

  26. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Morning Bhoys in my opinion we must be patient Brendan does not have a magic wand and change takes time.Currently we are a soft touch in Europe the club most others wish to draw in order to get a safe passage through too the next round.Brendan has been brought in to change that but it may well take two seasons to acomplish.Players have to be shed and new better quality players brought in we do not want to add more poor quality players to an already bloated squad.H.H.

  27. Auld tam both Rodgers and the board should have acted sooner. They didn’t. They never do. They never learn. If it results in an early exit to the imps who will be held accountable?

Making excuses for them is what CQN does.

Masty boring? Yeah the truth is boring eh. Law well is carrying out his duties? What ensuring we don’t qualify for the cl?

Battered bunnet oh dear. The are called non executive directors because they do not have an executive role. They sign up to strategy set by the ceo. That’s how it is supposed to work.

Then again our board are not exactly working (except for the good of themselves and certain,y not the club).

Law well is no lackey. He is an absolute disaster for Celtic.

Friesderfor the non contractual extra bung that law well got are in the public domain (in the accounts). So no need for me to see peters contract.

Lennon18 ah the old bogey man. All the same old old excuses getting an airing today.
