Hartson’s anti-analysis

563

You’ve got to love John Hartson, a subscriber to the ‘All we need is three new players’ belief structure.  This is a common sort of anti-analysis which crops up regularly in place of any actual thought.

There are three outfield areas of a team, defence, midfield and attack, and if you can only improve each area, you’ll have a better team.  Go figure.  Hartson told us we need “a central defender; a creative midfield player and a striker”.  It’s as though the reality hasn’t occurred that any team in the world wouldn’t improve with the addition of a better player in each area of the field.

Yes, we need a central defender, but we need a right back too.  We need a striker, but, I could argue two strikers would be handy.  I’ve no idea how Brendan Rodgers is planning to play tactically so we might need a midfielder.  Or two.

Pretty much every team in Europe will be having the same conversation right now.  John could usefully reflect that it’s not actual headcount we need, we have the numbers, it’s players able to improve the team we need.  That’s the magic ingredient everyone in the game hopes for.

Lincoln Red Imps captain, Roy Chipolina, is well within his rights to talk up their chances of knocking Celtic out of the Champions League.  They hold the lead and it will take three goals to settle nerves among the home support tomorrow.  It could be a tense occasion…….

You’re making a habit of jumping the gun.

The slow progress of the transfer window is frustrating for all. We could have signed a raft of players but isn’t that the mistake we have been making for several years – quantity over quality?

Its quite feasible that we will end the window with 3/4 additions who make a dicernible difference to the starting 11. Its also quite acceptable that it may take 3 windows to shape the squad to how the manager would like it, and its fair that while there are players surplus to requirements, there are also some who will be given a chance to prove themselves(Henderson, Allan, Janko) over the next 6 months.

if you can’t cut Lawwell any slack, at least cut Rodgers a bit and see how things progress. I don’t think he’ll hang around to be a yes man, do you?

Your knowledge of business management is somewhat lacking on this topic I’m afraid.

I’d agree. I said yesterday I’d be happy to see some players sold before any more unknown quantities are brought in.

The truth is, it’s your constant repeating of the same stuff that’s boring, I come on here to see who’s playing, latest signings,if any, what’s new within the club, I’m obviously logging into the wrong place, ffs BR had not acted quickly enough? He’s just in the door, he needs to access what he has, he just can’t act on the whim of the likes of you. Is it too much to give a new manager a few weeks? He said yesterday in his presser he knows who he wants and is on it, are you calling him a liar?

  7. Looking for a pub in Alcudia/Can Picafort area that will show game tonight, struggling so it’s looking like VIPLeague stream on my son’s phone.

No matter what formation BR sets us up tonight we will end up with the normal CP formation against the majority of Domestic games of 2-4-4. The full backs push on high up the park in a line with middle two and the attacking midfielders push up with the striker.

Exactly! At least Sevco’s derisory offer for him was reflective of his true worth. I’d struggle to identify a current Scottish Internationalist that is worth anywhere close to £5m.

There is a reason why the majority of transfer deals are completed towards the end of the window.

For example, Blackburn Rovers are unlikely to sell Shane Duffy until they sign another CB (perhaps Mulgrew?)

Grant Hanley is on the verge of joining Newcastle United for a ridiculous fee.

  10. Traditionalist. We are slow in the transfer market because lawful oversees the deals and many die because he will refuse to pay the going rate. Our mistake hasn’t been quantity over quality, it’s been project after project only ever brought in to make money and with no concern over team or on field performances.

Every year we have the biggest games of the season right at the start. Every year we do not prepare for the, because penny pinching is the way.

I make a habit of jumping the gun? No I am only trying to point out the errors before they happen. But look it’s not going to change. We are it seems incapable of learning.

As for Rodgers well he sounds and is acting just like poor old Ronny. Sad.

  11. Hope the weather in Glasgow this evening is going to be better than it is now in Dundee – chucking it down. Have to judge the best time to leave the office to hit the road, thinking of 3.30 ish.

Good point from TD, we need to dominate the midfield. ensure control, and then give it laldy – shooting on sight.

Tonight for me I would go the old fashioned direct route and get the ball in to the Imps penalty area as often as possible get right on top of that keeper and there defence and they will crack.Tippy tappy the ball about and try to walk the ball into the net will suit the Imps.Play at a fast pace dont let them up the park make them defend deep for me the Imps are vunerable look at the chances we created but failed to take in the first leg for me they have had there 5 minutes of fame show them respect by all means but dont show them any fear. H.H.

  13. Personally I’m glad BR is not flooding the team with more ‘projects’ it shows he will be picking his own men not bending to the will of others. Something he probably insisted on when he took the job. So let’s not be panic merchants, let that clown on the other side of the city buy all the duds he can find, he’s only there himself because he couldn’t whore his wares elsewhere.

  14. Neganon

Has it ever crossed your mind that we can’t afford the ” going rate” ? And all he’s doing is trying to get his club the best deal he can?. Or are you privy to transfer negotiations

    Devastating response.

  16. TBB unless you have been sitting at board meetings for years I am afraid I might have a bit more knowledge than you.

Friesderfor it is poor corporate governance for board members to give each other bonuses they aren’t contractually entitled to. In the financial services world all sorts of regulation has been introduced to make it illegal.

It’s doubly disgusting whilst not paying the living wage and offering zero hours contract. Ah Celtic. Such charitable ethos eh?

Timaloy29 we need to act differently due to our front ended season. But we don’t.

  17. timaloy29 sleeps on the heated driveway on

Also, problem is, when you bring in a new coach you are stuck in a period of transition.

When Ronny was appointed Celtic coach he wanted to see how good the current squad was. He made some low-risk signings that wouldn’t prevent him from shaking the squad up later: Gordon, Wakaso, Tonev, Denayer & Berget

He didn’t make a significant signing until the 1st of September when he signed Scepovic.

I agree with you to an extent. It’s obviously IDEAL for the club to have the new players lined up and signed in June.

First of all, you cannot control how the market works. You might be trying to sign a player but his club won’t sell until they get a replacement or maybe the player has an agent who insists they wait in order to get a better deal at the last minute.

Gunter was clearly holding out for a Premier League club and now he has one. He will be earning bigger money than we could pay.

Secondly, we shouldn’t need 3 or 4 new signings in place to navigate these qualifying rounds. New signings often need time to bed in and it isn’t ideal to do so in high pressure situations.

My worry is that Rodgers couldn’t beat semi-pros with international players. Maybe it was a one-off freak of a game? I Hope so.

  19. Can’t make Paradise tonight, ticket passed on to a good Tim who is presently unemployed. My main hope is for Brendan to play a system that stretches their defence by our players hitting the bye line , not going inside toward a crowded area. Next on the wish list is no Effe in defence. Liability on to many occasions. A pre game boost for the opposition , while adding anxiety to the many fans who will be in a highly strung state if the tie is not over by half time. Let’s pass the ball quickly and in a forward direction. Can we also shoot on sight.

NEG ANON 2. Fella every time a team gets a new manager there will be changes all through the footballing side of the club. When it was decided Ronnies time was up and Brendan came in it was all change and it takes time as much as we the support would like to see it happen overnight it aint going to happen we must back our new manager and show patience.H.H.

Its true, we have massive games in July. But signing players earlier is no guarantee of anything. So do we wait 2/3 weeks for the guys we want or go down the list and pick up players to placate the need to be seen to do something?

Its a competitive market, with players, clubs and agents putting spanners in the works all over the place.

Remember, Celtic could have taken the easy way out and appointed Neil Lennon again, for less money that Rodgers will be on. They could have done so and milked the Barca game etc again. They didn’t – in the scheme of things, the transfer window is open until the end of August – its a matter of fact we have to deal with that its difficult to get some deals finalised in July.

Its not unreasonable either that the current squad should be seeing off Lincoln RI. Last week was one of those freak results but one which understandably heightens concern among the support. But lets get the guys we want, not 3rd or 4th choice, and then the laborious process of signing them will be a distant memory. So might the Champions League, but again, we’re building a team to compete for 3/4 years and these ties can come down to the bounce of a ball. Lets get the guys we want, even if it takes another 3 weeks.

It’s was his first competitive game buddy, he’ll come good I have absolutely no doubt on that, the alternative is we do what sevco are doing 9 panic buys in three/ four weeks, we’ll see the standings come xmas

  26. One thing that struck me about the game in Gibraltar is that this Celtic team has played quite a few of these qualifiers on artificial pitches, have an artificial pitch at Lennoxtown, and have played on artificial pitches in the SPL, yet still look uncomfortable on artificial pitches.

I despise artificial pitches and think they should be banned in European comps, but surely we are used to them by now!

  27. DAVIDOPOULOS

Lincoln’s pitch barely qualified as an artificial pitch, I was surprised that the game went on and that it met UEFA standards..

  28. NEGANON2 on 20TH JULY 2016 10:27 AM

It is law wells job to set direction and strategy and execute it. It is the boards job to challenge that and set parameters around it. They are collectively responsible for performance.

The teenagers call that a fail, maybe even a mega one

  29. Whilst I think the selection of Efe Ambrose may be unpopular with Celtic fans, it would show that BR isn’t swayed by populists.

Pragmatism and three managers suggests the alternatives are still weaker. O’Connell is completely untested and looked nervous in a friendly, Ajer shows that a switch to CB

in a do or die game is not an option. Lustig lacks fitness, without the burden of a similar switch.

BR to play Efe then beat tomorrow’s transfer deadline.

  30. David

    I totally disagree,

A lot of our best stuff last year came on artificial turf, it’s the condition of said turf that’s the problem, if it’s not looked after properly it deteriorates the same as a grass pitch
