Headcount and the left back slot

240

Headcount is still a thing in football.  When fit last season, Greg Taylor, was first choice left back.  During his several injured periods, Josip Juranovic moved across from the right to cover.  In the early weeks of Ange Postecoglou’s tenure, before the arrival of Josip, Adam Montgomery (then 18) was used.  You knew when illness was really affecting Celtic on the three occasions Boli Bolingoli made the squad.

Bolingoli will remain the choice only when there is absolutely no alternative, although he will hopefully depart this window.  Until this morning, that left Celtic with Greg and Adam.  The latter has now joined St Johnstone on loan.

If we follow the headcount rule, we can be confident that Argentinian left back, Alexandro Bernabei (21) came through his medical without issue and will be confirmed shortly.  I cannot see Adam Montgomery being allowed to leave otherwise.

  1. If I had CCV,Starfelt,Jullien as our 3 CHs,I would be delighted. Not cost us a penny more.Money for another CH could buy Souza. That for me,would complete our squad.

  2. P67 and the LB situation …

Interesting that AM is being encouraged to go out on loan this season.

The loan angle seems to be a solution for a particular type of situation.

Game time in a competitive environment.

AM = out on loan at 19

Will he get games at LB or LM?

LS = out on loan at 23/24.

Will he get games at LB or LCB?

The bit that you don’t mention but is hugely important is the LB situation at U18 and the B Team?

Who will get these gigs this season and where does that leave them for the future?

Given the effort going into the B Team — new coaches and coaching / new intensity / new drills / new mentoring / new conditioning– who will be the starting LB his season and where will he fit into the LB player / talent pipeline?

One or two years away from the first team squad?

The goal surely is to improve the performance of the B Team to the point that its graduates can go straight into a 26/28 man first team squad with the odd loan if a particular position has a temporary glut — that how I would see it for the medium term.

One particular position that looks as if it could do with a bit of work on the player pathway front is CB where we seem to have a starting pair and a badly regressing SW and not much else — CJ is many things at the moment but he is nowhere near being a credible CB at P/head.

OU = 22 / seems to have played at a reasonable level out on loan in the JPL.

BL = 19 / seemed to be the senior CB in the B Team last season.

DM = 19 / emergency stint in the CL / EuL but seemed to disappear.

SW = 22 1/2 / most experienced but looked shakey when he played last season.

Desperately needs a run of games somewhere.

Should be a good case study to find out how we manage the player pathway to the first team — if AP goes out and brings in two potential starters then we know that there is a gap in the process.

  3. According to Football Critic, James appeared in 20 matches for Celtic, playing the full 90 minutes on 4 occasions- (3 SPL wins and a Europa win v Betis). He played over an hour on 2 more occasions- one was our defeat to Livi, and the rest were sub appearances ranging from 4 minutes to 34 minutes. The timing of his appearances were

    Aug- 2

    Sept- 6

    Oct- 1

    Nov- 4

    Dec- 2

    Jan- 2

with 3 further apps. in Feb, Apr & May. Certainly he was used less often after January but he was trusted in 6 Europa ties (3W & 3L) accumulating 199 minutes across 6 ties = average of 33 minutes per game.

Yosuke Ideguchi managed 3 SPL sub appearances- 16 mins in January, 3 mins in March and 28 in our final league game in May. He seems to have been fit enough since January to be considered but not chosen.

I think the future is up for grabs with both of them

Lots on HK and what he is going to bring to the party.

Chat about SMcM / DO’D and how they are going to lead the B Team.

Nothing about JK / GS …

Should we read anything into this?

  5. Not Jacinda — if she loses in Nov 2023 / very likely will she demand a third go or is that it?

  6. the manager explained what he brings to the table….

Harry Kewell is someone whom I know through the Australia connection but we have never worked together. He is one of Australia’s greatest ever footballers and a guy who has worked really hard to get a coaching career going. From afar, the reports that I have had on him is that he will bring some really good qualities in terms of his on-field coaching and his ability to mentor players. It was really important that when the players came back this season they understood that nothing stands still and there is a constant evolution. We want to better every year and seeing a couple of new faces in the staff is going to help that. He will bring energy as I know he’s super excited about being involved at this level and this football club. He’s got Champions League experience as a player and has won it. He was an attacking player and that will help the group and the balance we have in the coaching group. Alongside Stephen McManus and Darren O’Dea, I have a really good, exciting vibrant young coaching group who will put a lot of energy into the first team and the B team this year.

Instead of Westminster we are going to have the Supreme Court as the bogeypersons.

No chance of a IndyRef2 in Nov 23 so she will stretch the grievance culture out to the next GE.

She has absolutely no ability to fix anything just an ability to generate infinite levels of division and excuse making — not good..

Red tory unionists who are still terrified of the ghost of Thatcher, desperately clawing the earth to get away from another woman having the audacity to tell ‘real men’ how it is and how it’s going to be. Let the same tired old unionist lies resume.

Not Jacinda cannot deal with reality never mind real men.

She has done more time / work on rugs than the Arabian Nights.

  17. Borgo67,

Agree with you to an extent but if the team has an identity of speed, pressing from the front and aggression I just don’t see Jamesey in that mould.

  28. Couldn’t help but look at this developing story from Villa Park with a bit of envy. Outgrown the demand, waiting list and 20 years + since the last big change. Sound familar ? (sadface)

“Proposals would see the North Stand completely rebuilt, with the addition of around 7,400 seats as part of the biggest redevelopment of the ground for more than two decades.

A multi-use entertainment and retail venue, named Villa Live, would also be built on the existing North Stand car park.

The consultation runs until July 24 and gives supporters and the public the chance to have their say on the plans.

Villa hope to submit a formal planning application by the end of August, with the aim of starting the work next summer. The total cost of the project would be more than £100million.”
