Headcount and the left back slot

240

Headcount is still a thing in football.  When fit last season, Greg Taylor, was first choice left back.  During his several injured periods, Josip Juranovic moved across from the right to cover.  In the early weeks of Ange Postecoglou’s tenure, before the arrival of Josip, Adam Montgomery (then 18) was used.  You knew when illness was really affecting Celtic on the three occasions Boli Bolingoli made the squad.

Bolingoli will remain the choice only when there is absolutely no alternative, although he will hopefully depart this window.  Until this morning, that left Celtic with Greg and Adam.  The latter has now joined St Johnstone on loan.

If we follow the headcount rule, we can be confident that Argentinian left back, Alexandro Bernabei (21) came through his medical without issue and will be confirmed shortly.  I cannot see Adam Montgomery being allowed to leave otherwise.

  1. I’m not sure why we need to shroud our obvious activity in mystery Paul67.

We needed better than Taylor for all his improvements, if we want to compete in the Champions league. Those behind him are purely emergency cover of either the out of favour Bolingoli or the not yet good enough Montgomery.

Two players fighting it out for each position is what Ange wants. Having fixed the GK and now LB, we move to ensuring that is covered at CH (I envisage Welsh & Julien going, a brammer 2nd choice and Murray promoted) CDM (obviously Souza is wanted to compete with Guchi. McCarthy remains a mystery and a drain), RW and CF (A GG alternative when GG ain;t around).

All taking shape. All making sense. Keep it simple sir.

Becauseof his Da and all that entails.

    Or..

Because he fits the signing profile for Ange ?

Got to be the latter for me. Confess I know very little about him, his style, record or anythng else beyond the obvious.

And remember the lessons of one Paul Dalglish !

Not sure Welsh will go and Big Julie says he doesn’t want to- I too would like another CB as we cannot rely on CCV and Starfelt remaining uninjured and unsuspended for a complete season, but if their is any youth promotion to be made- Bosun Lawal will get it before Dane Murray- as he was the one at first team training on Day One.

Souza would be a great addition but we are not yet favourites to land him. I am also unsure that Ideguchi is ahead of James McC in the manager’s eye as we saw James on the pitch on a lot more occasions than we saw Yosüke. These are still imponderables to me and certainly not obvious- Ange’s mind is a wee bit harder to read than that.

    Jordan Larsson knows the city

He’ll certainly know where the finest soft play areas are and the best value kids menu dining.

He left when he was 7 years old.

  7. SFTB,

Hard to judge but I’m putting Ange’s active pursuit of Guchi over McCarthy to challenge that. Had he thought James was the man he wouldn’t have gone with Guchi in my opinion. Injury to Guchi and a desire to get the league won with a core set of players (to the detriment of both) made it hard.

I think Souza (here’s hoping) would be the Champions League level player he craves. And if not him then I expect a player of that ilk. I’m not going to sit on the fence – Mccarthy is just the opposite of an Ange-style player and expect him to get less game time next season as a result. A really bizarre signing.

Ideguchi was injured for a long period which badly hindered his progress, even after his recovery. I don’t think it was a case of Ange preferring McCarthy overall. I suspect he was protecting Ideguchi after such a bad injury and think he will feature ahead of McCarthy next season.

I know the city and I’m sure my boots are in the same cupboard as my bus pass, I’ll drop Ange a note😀

  10. I hope we keep our tabs on young Adam, as at only 19 he is obviously a talent. I’m sure he will do well at St Johnstone as his new manager was a good ” lateral izquierdo ” as well.

  11. The Larsson name is legendary at Parkhead. Let it remain so.

Regardless of how good Jordan Larsson would be, the pressure on him would be unrelenting and unbearable.

    No party needs that.

Jordan Larsson will find a new club, but it will not be in the East End of Glasgow.

    HH, the journey resumes shortly.

Good luck to Adam Montgomery. Anthony Ralston went to St Johnstone on loan, and hopefully the same again.

I heard Jordan used to love the chicken McNuggets out of McDonalds at Parkhead forge, washed down with irn bru from a glass bottle.

Might just swing it our way. :)

Ideguchi was injured for a long period which badly hindered his progress, even after his recovery.

TOM, my blood still boils when I think of that game and the assaults (no way were they fouls) on Ideguchi and, especially, on CalMac. The coward who did Ideguchi did eventually get done the following week, but the real coward who did for CalMac was never brought to book.

Like everyone else (I think) I love Ange to bits, but I hope that this season, having had a good look at what passes for refereeing in this country, he is more willing to speak openly about assaults on his players.

BADA, could the wee man not train as a guest player/trialist this week, to get him started with integrating into the squad. (I’m assuming fitness isn’t a problem as he was playing at league-level for his club last week.)

  18. I see that according to an article in the Celtic Star we are back on the trail of Ko Itakura, the Japanese left-sided centre back who is a Man City player that payed with Shalke 04 last season. On paper (and YouTube) he looks a player, but I personally don’t like the idea of any club, including us, over-loading the team with too many players of the one (foreign) nationality.

When does a group become a clique? Remember when Van Gaal, at his peak, tried it at Barcelona with top quality Dutch players? Mammaries pointing north within a few months, and all that!

  19. Bob Mortimers book is utterly brilliant, uplifting, sad, funny throughout he says 90% of it is true,

on “would i lie to you” he once told the story of how many celtic fans returned from lisbon on different modes of transport than they went out on, famously the guy who came back in a plane leaving his car in portugal, and another who many weeks later was found inside the celtic board room, emerging from the big cup itself while sean fallon was giving a tour.
