Healthy SPFL, you know it’s over when the enablers bale

749

It took until 5th October but Celtic are top of the Scottish Premiership for the first time.  The valiant stand by the Highlanders went the way of Culloden but whereas the competition for first place us over for the season, the league has a promising look to it.

The SPL suffered for many years not exclusively because Celtic and Rangers dominated but because those teams who should have been snapping at their heels – the city clubs – were hugely underachieving.

Motherwell have done enormously well finishing ‘best of the rest’ for three years but they are inhibited by being the third best supported team in Motherwell (population 30,311).  Their coaching and scouting infrastructure would provide a completely different platform if they were one of the top-flight clubs from Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen.

Below Celtic sit Motherwell, and the other very well run SPFL club, Inverness, but behind them are Aberdeen and Dundee United, who for once sit above the detritus (sorry, Kilmarnock, but you are a terribly run football club) and plucky upstarts (Ross County, from Dingwall, population 5,026).  Even Hibs are rallying.  They will return to the top half of the table if they beat Partick Thistle tonight.

Of the big city clubs, only Hearts (in Administration) are off the pace, and even their league status is bound to be rescued when Kilmarnock’s name is inevitably written with the accompanying parenthesis.

As we’ve noted here often before, when the Daily Record finally acknowledges the reality Celtic websites have long explained about the Rangers group of clubs, you know it’s too late to do anything about it.  Today’s piece in the newspaper confirms what we’ve known for a long time, the white flag has been raised.  If they were more circumspect before declaring the unquestionable business acumen of the Ibrox key-holder, at any point over the last 15 years, the spivs would have been unable to fill their boots.

All those fawning pieces simply enabled the misdeeds.

While we are on the topic of enablers, what is the price of loyalty?  £825k, apparently.

Congratulations to all who participated in the Great Scottish Run for 1254125.  It turned into a great Celtic day with participants ranging from the dedicated athletes to those on the high side of 20st who grabbed the chance to make a different to their own lives, as well as others.

It’s happening again next year, so you have plenty time to get ready.  The sooner you start preparing the better.

My sincere thanks to the many people who contributed to the 1254125 MyDonate page I put up on Friday.  It now sits at an incredible £935, I’ll leave it up for a few days more to see if we can break into four figures.

Thanks for all your help.

I said whenever the player gets man and ball commentators always say its a foul as he also took the man.

Never said the tackles don’t happen.

Referees are human and prone to mistakes and partiality .

The tackles are roundly condemned all over the world.

Except in Scotland on a selective basis.

This type of refereeing has greatly contributed to the decline of Scottish football.

Strangely enough the bias shown against us in Scotland has helped us in Europe were we stay disciplined and composed.

I don’t believe that it would have done any good if Neil had made comment on the challenge at the weekend, what’s the point. What did we have to gain. Does anyone actually believe that any action would have been taken following Neil’s comments, nah me neither.

On another note, slightly linked, good to see that Sevco are learning to behave on the park as they have only received 3 yellow cards and 0 reds in 8 games compared to the honest men, Ayr United, who have received 26 yellows and 2 reds. Could not make it up.

  12. During the live commentary on the game, I said I thought it was a rash challenge by Lasley. Don’t think it was any more then that. He is an average footballer who makes up for his lack of skill by trying to be a hard man. Lenny was right – it was a good shout for a penalty. The one telling thing that confirms where Lasley’s feeling lie is the fact that he did not apologise to Adam despite the fact he was in obvious discomfort. 9 times out of 10 Adam gets up and gets on with the game – he was just unlucky on this occasion.

Someone commented on Stokes not celebrating his goal. If you watch the re-run, Stokes was down injured having taken a sore one on his initial shot on goal. As he got back to his feet, he noticed the keeper struggling to get to the ball, beat him to the ball, spun round him and scored. Had to hit it with his left foot because his right one was still hurting :) He then limped back to the half way line.

Lenny should not have to say anything, the club must say they are afraid for the health and wellbeing of our players, refs are the only valid health and safety officials, if they refuse to take that responsibility seriously then the CEO of our club is responsible for the health and safety of the employees and must act accordingly.

No, the commentators elsewhere do not always flag up this kind of through the man challenge, especially the former players who still to this day talk about getting the ball or it’s a contact sport or a man’s game, or nonsense like that. There are too many of this type of challenge in British football, often in the middle of the park where little is at stake. Lasley could and should have been sent off, would not have helped Adam though, instead he got three months out for a corner kick.

  21. The extent of injury does not increase or lessen the nature of the challenge.

A fair challenge can result in a broken leg, ask Henrik. A diabolically dangerous challenge can result in no injury whatsoever. I recall Scott Brown being on the receiving end of a high challenge that connected with his knee in a European match.

I don’t think Neil Lennon said the tackle was fair, he said he didn’t blame Lasley for the injury.

Tax court labels King ‘shameless glib liar’

    February 16 2011 at 06:17pm

    By roy cokayne

    Comment on this story

    ——————————————————————————–

A tax court judgment has slammed the conduct of businessman and alleged tax dodger Dave King, describing the newly appointed executive chairman of listed investment holding company MicroMega Holdings as “a glib and shameless liar”.

King has been involved in an almost decade-long legal battle with the SA Revenue Service (Sars) over his personal tax affairs and those of companies he represented or controlled. Attempts to obtain comment from King were unsuccessful.

The judgment by Judge Brian Southwood and two assessors handed down in the North Gauteng High Court in October last year was previously confidential.

It became public when it formed part of an application by Sars in the North Gauteng High Court on Friday to execute and collect as much as possible of the assets, which had been converted to cash following preservation orders obtained by Sars, for the R2.7 billion tax debt of Ben Nevis and Metlika Trading.

King represented Ben Nevis in South Africa and controlled Metlika Trading.

Judge Aubrey Ledwaba reserved judgment in this application on Friday.

The tax court judgment dismissed the tax appeal of Ben Nevis against the income tax assessments issued by Sars in February 2002. Ben Nevis lodged an appeal against this judgment, but withdrew its appeal last week, which finally established the tax debt of Ben Nevis was R2.7bn.

Southwood said the court had seen King testify for four days and “are unanimous in finding that he is a mendacious witness whose evidence should not be accepted on any issue unless it is support by documents and other objective evidence”.

“It was remarkable that King showed no sign of embarrassment or any emotion when he conceded that he had lied to the (Sars) commissioner in a number of his income tax returns. In our assessment, he is a glib and shameless liar.”

King, an investment adviser, developed investment software and helped create Specialised Outsourcing, a firm which was listed on the JSE and is 70 percent owned by British Virgin Islands-registered Ben Nevis.

Between 1998 and 2001 Specialised Outsourcing sold shares, mainly through King, for a profit in excess of R1.2bn.

In 2001, Sars levied a tax assessment against King for R912.8 million, which has not yet been finalised. The High Court in Pretoria heard in 2002 that King’s income tax returns for the years 1990 to 2001 reflected a modest annual income of R60 000 and King had then asked to be deregistered as a taxpayer.

Sars launched an investigation into King’s affairs in May 2000 when it became aware that he had bought an Irma Stern painting for R1.76m and could not reconcile this purchase with his declared gross income of R60 000.

King resigned from MicroMega eight years ago because of his legal battle with Sars and his wish to distance MicroMega from his difficulties with Sars, but returned as executive chairman last month. MicroMega’s share price more than doubled during the week in which his appointment was announced.

He said the decision to accept the position of executive chairman, despite the lack of finalisation of his legal battle, was motivated by a settlement agreement he claimed was reached between himself and Sars and the Reserve Bank in late 2009. – Roy Cokayne
