Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

Not sure I’m watching emmerdale then corrie haha hh

  4. Delighted for Craig Gordon that he starts for Scotland tonight, what a story his is. I feel that without his performances in Europe we would have been out much sooner and the squad wouldn’t have benefited from the development that European football provided.

For that reason, he’s my Player of the Year.

  5. TGCW

Sad to see how much he’s changed.

I remember Stef and I coming back from Rugby Park on the final day of the 2003 season and meeting him in The Crystal Palace on Jamaica St after he got back from Ibrox. He appeared genuinely sorry that as Tims we’d won no silverware that season.

There was another occasion involving hun fans when we watched a Scotland v Italy game in town but that’s not for here.

I was at the 1960 final at hampden, in the Huns end. As you say they were giving Madrid all sorts of abuse until they took Eintracht apart. My mate and I were belting out “Viva Real” but as schoolboys got no hassle.

I was also at the semi-final that year and was really happy with the German Huns 6-3 victory..

  7. Re the Hun debate,

I looked up a few definitions.

How about, ” a barbarous and destructive person.”

From me school days I looked up the infamous “Hun” speech of Kaiser Wilhem the Second. ( Grandson of Queen Victoria)

No prizes for spotting any similarities in mindset.

On addressing German troops who were departing to suppress the Boxer rebellion in China,

” Should you encounter the enemy he will be defeated. No quarter will be given. Prisoners will not be taken…Just a thousand years ago the Huns under King Attila made a name for themselves…in such a way in China no Chinese will ever again dare to look cross-eyed at a German.”

I wonder what the citizens of Barcelona, Manchester, Birmingham would make of the Rangers hoardes.

Again it is not a term to describe all Sevco followers, but those who subscribe to an aggressive destructive mindset.

This isn’t Sectarian but a historically accurate term of reference for the noxious, dangerous Sevco element.

  8. Despite my disagreements with Jim Delahunt I feel sorry for him that he has been sacked over his drink driving offence.

His father died recently whilst on air and I remember listening as he was called away mid-show. So it’s a bit understandable if he has been under some pressure.

I wish you all the best Jim.

  10. If one wants to really hurt, ignore the use of the word Hun or Swevco.

Rather try ‘Slope the Pack Man’. or even better ask where have the Arsenal shares gone.

Personally I would never, never, never try to be hurtful.

  11. Clarkson sacked.

Surely he will get an offer from the huns to join the board?

He has all the credentials being a bigoted ,bullying, racist buffoon.

I think the people signing petitions on his behalf should be ashamed of themselves.

  17. During the broadcast he repeated a chant sung about him by supporters featuring the line “the h*** are deid”.

The SFA’s compliance officer asserts that the on-loan Manchester City player broke disciplinary rule 73 by making a “comment of an offensive nature”.

As another excellent CQN-er (glendalystonsils?) pointed out previously, perhaps what has been taken as offensive (by the SFA compliance stooge) is the reference to the FACT that they died.

I follow the Scotland team but I have absolutely no love for the tartan army. A bunch of kilted drunken hypocrites, made up mostly from fans out with us and sevco. The same fans who despise Celtic and our fans, the same fans who like to tar us with the Sectarian brush. The same fans who have no problem booing an opposing teams national anthem or singing their racist “if you hate the fn English clap your hands” or their homophobic song about Jimmy Hill until his illness was diagnosed.

    A holes.
