Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

It’s possible fixtures won’t be announced for the split until 23rd April with first fixtures being 25 th April.

The reason being is that Celtic play Dundee on 22nd April which is the first midweek date Celtic have free.

Usually fixtures for split would be announced round about cup semi final time 18th April. However it will all depend if Dundee’s game against us makes a difference as to whether or not they finish in top 6 or not.

Hatefest? A bit strong mate – John Torode is simply giving his honest opinion of that tarte tatin!

  13. It is true that in todays Scotland, it is easy to be caught ‘drink driving’ which could in some circumstances sound a harsh description, given that 1 pint could put you ‘over’ in Gretna but not come close to that in Carlisle.

  14. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked on

It is very easy to say: Simply do not drink at all if you are going to drive.

What about if you have a heavy cold? A toothache? A serious worry ?

What if you are listening to a piece of music you REALLY like? An idiot on Radio Shortbread?

There are many things which can adversely affect driving. Why is drink singled out?

PS I am not very interested in the Internationals. Haven`t been since I was about sixteen.

The problem with the research I referred to is that it did not include Ireland per se but only the areas within the UK. Certainly supports the theory that the Scotti made or make up the populations of both part of Ireland and Scotland. The Picts, who spoke a Welsh/Brythonic language 1500 years back certainly spoke Gaelic later, ie after the Scotti arrived. I watched a BBC2/4 programme a few weeks back which focused on the Archeological history of Ireland that suggested that the Gaels themselves were forced over time to the North and the North West of Ireland, long before the Normans arrived. The Scottish Nation of today is not Irish as such, but as I have argued before, would not exist without its’ own Scots/Irish history.

Good God,how far back do you want to go?.We all know what they were like then,FFS Masons picked the team then. The Scotland support is as far removed from those days as you could possibly imagine. The Huns detest the Scotland fans. They detest the Scotland team.I have great Celtic mates,go all over Europe with Scotland. They never miss a trip, and have met loads of new mates through it.The Huns never mentioned unless its to laugh at them.
