Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

    TET,

I apologise for my insensitivity re your domestic plight.

If I may, I would recommend that you seek a coastal haven, to where you can retreat and converse with locals, most of whom won’t understand a word you say, but will nod politely at appropriate gaps in your discourse.

    See you at Easter, hopefully.

  2. Oglach/HT,

I believe them to be Irish. They were born and live in the north east of the island but profess to be British.

Anywhere they are in the world they are referred to as Irish, which they find hard to deny.

I was reading “The Old Firm” by Bill Murray. In it’s pages we have Gordon Dalzeil ,when at Oldco, telling journalists about his impending marriage to a catholic “I have already had that all clear from Ibrox ” and “it’s not like we’re getting married in the chapel or anything.” Wonder what his view on Hun being sectarian is??

    Is it just me?

Could someone enlighten me as to why a radio sports broadcaster would get sacked for drink driving?

I am not condoning the behaviour.

However I don’t see why it’s relevant to his broadcasting. I can understand why eg a motoring broadcaster would get sacked but not a sports broadcaster.

Agree, if the guy has a problem he needs help.He was done just outside the studio. We could be doing with an experienced Press Officer……

A few years ago I had a conversation with a young lad and his mum both from Nothern Ireland. They were so adamant that they were British and not Irish that I got annoyed and asked if he had his passport and could I see it? He gave me his passport and I showed him the front of it. It said

Passport of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

    Your not british son.

    Didn’t go down too well.

They may well be Ulster born, but recent research, by University College London, and Oxford University, adds support to the theory that, the populations of present day NE Ireland, Galloway, Ayrshire, the West Highlands and the Western Isles, are very much genetically related to the ancient tribes of those same areas nearly 1500 years ago. The research itself is published in Nature, the scientific journal, though they provide only a premise online. Those same areas of course made up the historic kingdom of Dalriada, whose peoples spoke Goidelic languages, and were described in the research as Scots/Irish. Might be two tribes now of course!

    The Huns debate,

    A Hun is a hun,is a Hun.

For me they have always been Huns and always will be Huns,

I know quite a few decent Huns, but also know a lot of bad yins.

    The POTY

    I would vote for Johanson,

    YPOTY Jason Denayer,

And if we manage a treble,

Many would need to eat humble pie and vote for Ronnie.

Was a 15 year old then so memory fuzzy.

Still a stadium full of Huns in tartan though.

  14. Bada – the deal would have to right, of course. If Sunderland go down a loan could be possible.

The lack of goals isn’t a concern to me. Guidetti scored 1 in 6 months at Stoke. Hard league to get goals when with a bad side.

Plus Fletcher is a far better fit as a lone striker than what we have.

  18. Player of the year.

Broonie closely follow by Virgil. Broonie when not in the team is sorely missed. Virgil strolls through games and because he makes it look so easy sometimes doesn’t get credit he deserves. His acceleration is fantastic and allows him to protect the defence.

If it was from Christmas, then Biton would have a great shout Honourable mentions to Craig Gordon and Jason Denayer.

  19. If half of what is being posted here is true, it begs the question, just exactly is Steven House’s finest doing to eaarn their corn?

I was at the 1960 final at hampden, in the Huns end. As you say they were giving Madrid all sorts of abuse until they took Eintracht apart. My mate and I were belting out “Viva Real” but as schoolboys got no hassle.

I was also at the semi-final that year and was really happy with the German Huns 6-3 victory..
