Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

So hard to choose between Gordon, Bitton, Brown and Johanson.

As much as love to watch Bitton, i think it is between Gordon and Brown.

Whoever slams home the winner in The Scottish Cup Final to win us the treble will possibly put themself into contention :)

Why is dave king applying to the COS for exeption of part 216(3) of the insolvency act (prohibited names ),if it was the holding company the was liquidated and not the deid club .

or is he asking to be on the board of

    wavetower international football club

Hope Craig .Broonie.JF and WGS are successful but the result will have no impact on my mood.I care not a jot.

Celtics results and performances have a mind altering effect on me.

My wife can testify to this.

My dad was a huge follower of the Tartan army and encouraged me to do so.

My first match was a Sotland V Israel match.

After 30 minutes of listening to filthy tartan clad HUNS abuse Jimmy Johnstone from all over the ground i left.I have never felt any connection to national team since.

My dad even had 2 tickets for Wembley when i lived in London and refused to go with.

I have no international team that i support and find watching games as a neutral fun.

Spurs fans embraced the Ytd word when their club was derided by opposing fans.Ytd Army is sung at Whiteheart Lane. The English FA and Met police tried to criminalize spurs fans for singing it but had to climb down because it was unworkable.Aberdeen have taken on the “sheep” comparison as Celtic have when “fenian” was aimed at us as an insult.Surely the answer would be for the Huns to embrace the fact that they are Huns.lol.

Been to one Scotland game in my life.Charlie Nicholas had just broken into the Scotland team, must have been about 82.Anyway a small group of Northern Ireland fans in the enclosure right behind the dugouts starting singing the sash and Scotland fans in the Celtic end joined in.Enough for me.

    TET,

Once again, you are spot on with your football knowledge.

Bitton is the reason that so many of our players have increased their levels of performance.

Brown only has his own job to do now and not cover the whole midfield.

Jo can now operate further forward, where he is more effective, especially when Commons isn’t playing.

Poor Jeremy. Obviously Mc.Quarrie never invoked the SFA’s Not Proven verdict.

  11. Potential POTYs.

Thanks HT for sending me the txt of the Huns singing “Go home ya Huns” to the Bayern support.I was told that Paul McBride a lawyer and Celtic lawyer too described Hun as sectarian.I pointed out that Donald Findlay,a lawyer and ex director of Oldco, gave an interview to the Mail stating Newco are a new entity and have no history. Therefore by his reasoning we are bigots and they’re a new club.I’m awaiting the reply.

  16. thomthethim for oscar ok,

I come on here for solace and support because I’m not allowed to talk in the house, and all I get is abuse from you:-)

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after undergoing knee surgery.

Forster was injured during the Saints’ 2-0 home victory over Burnley on Saturday and a scan on Monday showed he had suffered damage to his left patellar tendon.

The 27-year-old has now had a successful operation and will miss Saints’ final eight matches of the Premier League campaign as a result.

An injury of this nature can take between nine and 12 months to heal, but Southampton will make a longer-term prediction of when Forster will return to action having assessed once the effects of his operation have settled down, with the club’s medical staff confident he will make a full recovery.

Southampton’s executive director of football Les Reed told the club’s official website: “Fraser is an outstanding goalkeeper and has been a huge part of our success this season. While this is a challenging situation, we look forward to him returning to action as soon as he is fully fit.

“I am sure he will go on to make a significant number of appearances for Southampton and for England, and will get the best support available to help him recover to do so.

“No one will be any sadder than Kelvin Davis, who did an outstanding job replacing Fraser in such circumstances. Nobody could be better to step into the fray in terms of experience and ability.

“Kelvin is a big-game player, who will be ably supported by Paulo Gazzaniga and Cody Cropper. I am sure the team will now be even more motivated to ensure we stay miserly in front of our goal and ruthless at the other end.”

Forster, who has been ever present for Saints this season after moving from Celtic for £10m last August, crumpled to the ground when his left knee appeared to give way as he cleared a ball upfield under a challenge from Burnley striker Sam Vokes.

He immediately signalled to the bench that he needed replacing and was carried off to a standing ovation from the home fans at St Mary’s before being taken to hospital.

Forster was forced to withdraw from the England squad for the upcoming games against Lithuania and Italy and he will also now miss the matches against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia in June.

Blantyre Tim: Is the Stonefield Tavern at the bottom of Priory Street ,more or less? If so I used to go there when visiting the Wrights ( Jack and Alice). Nice wee pub then. With regard to the Delahunt queries, his father came to my school from Blair’s College when I was in 5th year,I think, but had no interest in football and played for the rugby team (which was made up of those who did not get in the1st or 2nd football ) . Never saw him or any of his family at any games or ever on the Garryowen bus , but they were all chapel attending and at all services ,so, maybe different priorities.

  24. The bbc news going on about the wee guy playing for Madrid who may reject playing for scotland and right on que bring mcgeady and McCarthy into it, no mention of other players who played for countries not of there birth like Gough mccall or goram. Strange how these clowns never get a mention

  25. During WW2 the nazi Germany forces were widely known as the Hun. They were characterised by their pathological hatred of certain races and religions, and the irrational believe that they were better than any other race of people, indeed that they were the Master race.

In recent years the football club Rangers, before they were liquidated, were widely known as the Hun. Their fans were characterised by their pathological hatred of certain races and religions and the irrational believe that they were better than any other race of people, indeed that they were the Peepul.

I’m sure there are other parrallels that one might choose to draw.
