Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

Not all great leaders win and not all crap leaders lose. Winning or losing is only one measure of possible un/greatness.

    Take Tommy Burns for example……

Or the leaders of ’16? Did Ernie’s equivalents run around then shouting yaboo ye lost so yous urnay great?

Or perhaps Ernie’s moniker? Did Che win or lose? Was he great or just great iconography for t-shirts and posters?

In fact zombies is much more descriptive of the followers of Sevco.

Hun actually allows them to believe they are still the same club. This hun case thing is going to be a major own goal I suggest!

  12. SF do not take all of the 43k allowance. They take a living wage. I am not, by the way, an out and out Shinner. I will however, give credit where it is due. Time will tell whether or not they make a big impact this time round, but for sure they have FF and FG wetting themselves, along with the remnants of the Irish Labour Party down South. The last named are a bit like Scottish Labour. Labour in name only.

Meanwhile the Celts resume the football on Good Friday, and it will be.

  14. Shieldmuir Celtic on

Christine Graham must be delighted at the results of the revised anti – sectarian legislation which has exceded her hopes by punishing so many Celtic supporters. This is due mainly to the fact that ‘sectarianism’ can be defined as anything you want it to be and judgements on ‘offensiveness’ are left to the discretion of Police Scotland. All of this of course has nothing to do with justice but is the very opposite.Perhaps we should submit more official complaints on these matters.

Was forgetting it’s not the bottom placed SPFL side that goes into the play offs, it’s the 2cnd bottom side,

Which right now looks like Motherwell or Ross County, assuming St Mirren end up bottom,

Ross County will fight tooth and nail to keep their place in the top league,

And Motherwell without Stuart McCall at the helm presumably will not just roll over as usual,

More so with Scott MacDonald back leading their front line

I can maybe see them maybe beating Hibs – maybe – but not Ross County or Motherwell,

    Hope not anyway…

That was stomach churning stuff on Sunday, only tuned in assuming they’d get gubbed,

  20. Raymac – I thought what you were saying was quite interesting. The SF MLAs do take they’re full allowance in their paypacket, they keep around £26k (the average industrial wage) and the rest goes back to the party. Who knows what then happens to it but it seems less like the grand gesture that was initially implied.

Some breakdown here. I don’t know what side of the fence the Belfast Telegraph sits on but I assume what they say is correct and substantiated.

  21. The Media are the real enemy in this country

Football is a sport.reporter’s should do there job and tell us in print

how the football was played.sadly it doesn’t end there.footballers private lives

are be scrutinized. This poor excuse of being a celebrity and they should behave accordingly

doesn’t hold with me.the media get away with murder.firstly they should be told that a lot of these story’s have really got nothing to do with them

Also the law judges and others are not up to it.I have my suspicions

That the media no a lot of what goes on in that fraternity

but it all gets swept under the carpet.think about you never here about these judges or law enforcers being up to no good.so my conclusion is that They are all in it together.me I used to like reading the papers now.I don’t even bother.and that’s another thing don’t buy there papers.then hopefully they will all go to the wall and the BBC Scotland they are another shower

.that ex DJ on Clyde is getting a slot on Kaye Adams show.to me took her husband to court.used the battered wife bit.to get her husband convicted

I was never convinced with her .thought she was just as bad if not worse than her partner

So them lot have all got something on one and another.I hate these f…..s who get away with everything

    .

    .

  22. Rock Tree Bhoy,

I really hope Motherwell pick up a bit of form.Recent results suggest this. They have a team half full of Tims, and a bright manager, who seems at the moment to be turning it around.

These guys have a living to make.Going down will seriously damage their earnings,so no Motherwell from the Mc Call days.Ross County also playing well.

  23. I’ve just watched highlights of Hibs/Sevco. First goal the left side player was a yard off. Watch it. Second goal the Hibs defender was cleaned out. Meanwhile whoever is commentating is orgasmic. Jeez.

  24. 6 days left for automatic de-listing of the hun on the alternative investment market should be the BIG story for the SMSM.

    Just cancelled my Sky,

Been with them for 15 years,

    They offered me 50% discount

  27. weeminger–I’m sure the Belfast Telegraph have checked their facts. They didn’t always do so. However SF is to a fair extent self-funding. I see also that PmacG has a mention from someone one Gregory Campbell. It included the best description of him that I have read anywhere—Walking Poison. Dena also advised me to seek advice and help from other polititions. I have always done so. I have been in Stormont and constituency offices wit SF, DUP, Alliance, UU and the rest. I make no distinction in pursuit of a good cause, and I was brought up like that. If the UK parties raised funds as SF do there would be less inequality, because they’d know the value of money. Ditto if they were giving a percentage of their salary. Again I am not a full-blown Shinner, but they put their money where their mouth is.

    Well done.

I dumped them about a year ago and they keep trying to tempt me back. Ltest is a 33% discount for 5 years.

Not tempted in the least and I have told them why.

It’s not for me to try and tell other tims what to do, but I can not and will not fund that organisation due to

    1) treatment of Celtic

    2) treatment of Scottish football

    3) the influence of News International over our elected politicians of all hues.
