Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

  16. As we are breaching some imaginary SFA offensive code by saying “huns” or “deid” in the same sentence…

Is “Currant Bhuns” and an “ex-club” in one sentence acceptable?

I don’t often bother posting any more, sometimes I read a wee bit but more and more I just don’t seem to have the time. I did read Paul’s recent articles about the art of spin and the distortion of truth; I read it with real interest – and to a wee degree… amusement.

This place used to be a temple to truth. Used to be… and with that in mind and your post about ‘the huns with their great big guns’ well I won’t argue with you there regards the Liffey, but it is a most inconvenient truth (and to many, an embarrassing truth) as to the actual nationality and persuasion of oh so many who willing raised their rifles and shot to death those who dared to fight for their country.

Sometimes ‘real’ history has a way of booting you right in the baws, a right good sore one too, too often too, but you have to wipe away the tears and see the truth for what it is… the truth. So, so many don’t. They accept garbage as truth with the absence of proof or logic as convenient garnish. More fool they and hypocrites to boot. But as the old saying goes… people will believe liars because they want to believe what they want to believe and they’ll have you believe they are fair and honest intelligent persons.

In the Glasgow vernacular the term Hun is defined simply as a supporter of Rangers, or whatever anybody prefers to call that particular entity, nothing more and nothing less,. A lawyer once told me that.

  22. KJ why let the facts get in the way of one of your usually inaccurate rants. The CQN article was published in the Sunday Herald not the Herald, completely different newspapers, different editorial team policy etc. I think Winning Captains has already pointed that out, of course you have your opinion on other Celtic fans but please keep your rants based on the truth. h H Hebcelt

  23. Good morning CQNers,

Winning Captains – Glad to see the emphatic ruling from the ASA, well done for all the sterling work of yourself and the others involved in this project.

Kevjungle, thank you for your reply yesterday, I think we’ll agree to differ in our chosen targets.

Just then they came in sight of thirty or forty windmills that rise from that plain. And no sooner did Don Quixote see them that he said to his squire, “Fortune is guiding our affairs better than we ourselves could have wished. Do you see over yonder, friend Sancho, thirty or forty hulking giants? I intend to do battle with them and slay them. With their spoils we shall begin to be rich for this is a righteous war and the removal of so foul a brood from off the face of the earth is a service God will bless.”

    “What giants?” asked Sancho Panza.

“Those you see over there,” replied his master, “with their long arms. Some of them have arms well nigh two leagues in length.”

“Take care, sir,” cried Sancho. “Those over there are not giants but windmills. Those things that seem to be their arms are sails which, when they are whirled around by the wind, turn the millstone.”
