Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

Very kind T but as it’s an organised thing I’m not sure how much opportunity we’ll have to do our own thing.

Would love Broony to captain Scotland to the Finals, then retire on the day Scotland are knocked out, or when he lifts the trophy. The latter is well far fetched optimism. :))

    Right Guys

As there is no real football on this weekend, me an Mrs Unthank are off to Dublin tomorrow. Not been there for 25 years. Last time I went there was my worst ever marathon, something to do with overloading of carbs via Guinness!!!

So I would appreciate some help. Best bar? best live music? does Bruxelles still do Jazz on a Sunday? Best food? After The Gresham, Kilmainham, the PO what’s next? Is there a “Must do” within striking distance?

    Thanks

  5. Good Evening my fellow Celtic Supporters.. am struggling to put down in words what I feel and how I can express myself. I cannot believe the recent gutter press articles aimed at our Club, our Board, our Players and our Fans on a series of fabricated and exaggerated stories. I cant remember such an onslaught of anti Celtic, anti Catholic bigoted lies and hate filled columns ever in my 62 years. I’m really struggling right now to explain my anger. What can we do about this?.. How can we stop it? How can we fight back?? help me, please.

If you like Tapas there are a few decent places around Sth William Street (runs between Grafton Street and Sth Great Georges Street) lots of nice bars around that general area and you are better off around there than Temple Bar which is all touristy rip off diddly eye music and english stag and hen puking parties

We can be sure not to buy the rags and accelerate their demise.

The club can hire an ar3e kicker as head of Comms to scare the crap out of the MSM.

Celtic can also play hard ball with the SFA and SPFL.

Only my opinion but I feel.Craig Gordon has been immense for us. I feel that he is a better more mobile keeper than Big FF. We have been truly blessed in the keeper dept over this past few years.Wish we had similar luck up front.

Noticed SF discussion today upon scrolling back. No wish to introduce argument on politics but all SF workers paid industrial living wage circa 23k currently. Difference between that and salary goes back to party.

Don’t give a stuff what anyone says there is no harder working constit representatives in the North and I disagree with them on certain issues but unlike Raymac education is not one of them.

  13. andy, With all struggles and all causes you have to take the long term view. There will always be periods & events that will cause anger and stress. Just remember when the persecution and abuse is at its highest its because the enemy are hurting and we are winning. So just keep that in your mind, we are winning.

It is a sure sign of their pain and desperation at where we are .

they hate the thought of us pointing and laughing at them every second of the day.

Their MSM is only limited like their support to Scotland & Norn Irn.

It is primarily anti Celtic in my opinion rather than anti catholic. I might be wrong and there is no doubt that anti catholic individuals and organisations are stirring the pot but the gleeful contributions from so called journalists is primarily anti Celtic. They don’t like us having a successful foreign manager. They don’t like us attracting good players from abroad. They don’t like us being financially successful. They don’t like us being successful on the pitch.

They have one of their darlings in the ibrox dug out again and now it is full focus on narrowing the chasm between us.

  19. andyR53,

Know how you feel.It is reaching levels now,I cant remember before. There is an open goal here for Celtic with the RST statement saying our club are nurturing “Sectarianism”.

That statement has to have our lawyers onto it.

It shows how badly off they are, they are totally donald ducked so they throw a few bones to their dogs in the form of stupid stories about how bad celtic are,I live in Ireland so its easy for me to ignore it…..but thats what I would do

  21. Unthank,

Ireland is playing Poland on Sunday, so the town will be busy, as it’s a sell out.

  22. Just got an email from Scot Rail there, what a fright I got…

“On Wednesday 1 April, Abellio will take over the First ScotRail daytime services. Serco will begin to operate the Caledonian Sleeper services on Tuesday 31 March.

We would like to thank you for your custom over the last 10 years – we’ve worked hard to improve your services and recognise that there has been a lot of change. We’re proud of what we have achieved, but couldn’t have done it without the patience and understanding of our customers.

  23. Where would I be without my friends in this great Family of Celtic Supporters… I’ve calmed down now, and hear and understand every word all of you have said.. You are, of course all correct.. we have been here before, and, no doubt be there again. I hope we do the treble this year, and force them to recognise it.. I hope justice is done, and sevco crash and burn.. I hope one day we will be recognised for all the fantastic and unbelievable work we do, here and across the World.. I hope…. (but I don’t hold my breath.) God Bless every single one of you, you are wonderful warm and generous human beings. I love you all.
