Herald forced to reconsider hasty article

877

I see The Herald were forced to reconsider Martin William’s hasty article, posted first online last night but now amended, where they repeat an erroneous claim that in 2001 Celtic claimed the word ‘hun’ is sectarian.  The current version of the article makes no such reference.

Much of what remains of the article is a random collection of quotes, appeals and one assertion by Williams that “Celtic warned fans they can no longer call Rangers fans ‘h***’ 14 years ago”, which appears to be based on a quote by then club employee John Cole’s etiquette requirement for a forum he administered.

This is a classic manipulative argument technique (and by classic I mean the ancient Greeks first identified it).  Take a statement by someone, for example:

The word f*** is not allowed on CQN, because the administrator acknowledged that it “can cause offence”.

Ignore the fact that the same administrator would never dream of chastising someone for using the word away from the blog, as the word is not inherently offensive as it does not, for example, offend at a comedy show.

State that some people believe the word to be inherently offensive in itself, or worse.

Build momentum for your argument by reminding readers that CQN’ers have been warned they can no longer use it, without issuing any caveats to the context.

Then allow your tenuous references to dovetail into an argument.

It’s an absurd and driven technique for the hard of thinking.  It is also patently transparent.

Celtic picked this matter up at the time of first publication and are considering their position in relation to various items published yesterday.

As a friend said last night, “What a sad little country”.

Don’t work too hard. Jamieson’s, umph, not so sure about that, no way I’ll find a 16 year old Jura for the next 4 days! Really looking forward to all the sights in Dublin and dragging her indoors to every catholic church I can find. I’ll get her converted by hook or by crook. Took me 3 months to turn her into a rabid tim!

does anyone else get freaked out with the adverts that appear at the bottom of the CQN page

i know they use cookies to personalise what they show to each CQNer, but theres a major whiff of Big Brother about it, and i doubt many people on here agree with that type of philosophy

I think Paul67 should scrap those adverts or at least have generic ones

And they are stupid anyway, i done a bit of online shopping the other day, and so the advert banner shows an advert for that particular clothes store. Whats the point, ive already bought what i wanted to buy, pointless showing me the advert now (though my new £3000 armani suit is a beauty ;-) )

and the Tv license advert FFS, i was on their site yesterday but whats the point in advertising that, i know it exists and what its for and that i have no alternative company to buy my tv license from

Unfortunately , the truth can be variable.

My truth is that in some people’ s minds there are at least two types of Rangers supporters – Huns and Bluenoses.I attended a non denom.Glasgow Primary School / I attended a non denom Glasgow Secondary School.I openlysupported Celtic from Primary 1 onwards.I soon learned the difference between a Hun and a Bluenose .The former hated me because they mistakenly assumed I was a Catholic, the latter thought I was a contrary daftie.I had lots of fights with Huns, I never ever had a fight with a bluenose..

In my vernacular a Hun is a rabid pea brained bigot with delusions of supremacy and entitlement.

  14. 67Heaven .. CHALLENGING THE LIE ..I am wee Oscar...... Ipox belongs to the creditors on

A Hun is a Hun, for awe that ………. The bigots have excelled themselves on this one, and have become nothing more than an embarrassment…..

  15. I’ve been feeling a bit tired in work this morning and giving it big yawns with my arms out stretched.

Huns are looking over and shaking their heads…They are thinking I’m doing a Broony, as if I would :))

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huns

The Huns were a nomadic group of people who are known to have lived in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia between the 1st century AD and the 7th century.

    ‎Attila – ‎Xiongnu – ‎Migration Period – ‎Hunnic language

    So, what’s offensive …..?

  17. Sounded like a lot of Huns supporting the province v Scotchland last night. Recognised a lot of the tunes, don’t know the words though, probably for the good.

The truth is indeed the truth, always and for ever.

    But who has it?

Is their truth my truth? Is your truth my truth? Or is it somewhere in between? The closer our separate but real truths are, the better.

In Scotland, there is a huge disconnect between the perception of truth from different corners. A bit like saying, my Scotland isn’t your Scotland. Or even further, I don’t want your Scotland – I want mine, only.

but there was also a program on BBC4 last night that Dr Michael Molsey(?) done about blood whch was tres interesting

no other channel would do stuff like that, in fact the bbc make comedies, documentaries, factual programs etc that no other channel would do

if we scrap the license fee then the chances are we would lose all thats good about some of the programs the BBC produce or get produced for them and be stuck with a diet of reality tv nonsense to suit advertisers

so it may not be a perfect model, but we dont want to throw the baby out with the bathwater

in fact people should be careful not to throw babies out at all (that was a public service announcement NOT funded by your license fee :-) )

I take your point mate but I personally don’t make the distinction. I don’t use the term in a derogatory mind, I use it because I grew up using it and nobody over the years ever batted an eyelid. Every football supporter I know refers to them as ‘huns’. I can’t ever remember getting the impression that any of them were ever being spiteful in their use of the term.

Every Rangers supporter I know, and I know quite a few, accepts the title as historical and innocuous, though they all tell me to a person they wish other teams supporters would be kinder to them in song, as if.

Don’t get on too often these days so if any of you kind souls don’t mind bringing me up to speed with a couple of issues…

Whatever happened to the Dundee United supporters who beat up Zaluska?

    Whatever happened to Res 12?

Now this bit I’m asking from memory and due to mild indifference I may be far from accurate but I’d be interested to know how far from the accepted figure I am:

The new huns ran up an 18 Million loss in their Ist year of existence. They then ran up a 12 million loss in the next, assuming they’ve reigned that in I’ll guess that they’ll run up around an 8 million loss this year. Add to that their borrowings circa 10 million give or take… would I be right in guessing that they are in hock to the sum of circa 50 million +interest?

Re your post last night seeking information on The Keening Women’s Alliance.

Try looking up http://www.aisteach..org. This is a very interesting and informative site in its own right but more importantly does contain some info on the group you are researching..

My point was simply: don’t accept as true anything told to you by another without unequivocal proof. (Hard to do I accept) To do so though, and to spread that ‘truth’, knowing, or at least suspecting, that it is malicious in intent and possibly nothing more, makes you what exactly?

    Not you personally.

I don’t know why but ‘who wants to throw the first stone’ came into my mind.
