Historic Kazak win, view from Russia

1082

Celtic were not the only seeds to get a bloody nose in this week’s Champions League play-off round first leg games.  Lyon and Real Sociedad looked well matched before the game but Lyon’s 0-2 home defeat suggests the seeds were outclassed.

Austria Vienna were the team I wanted this round but despite indifferent domestic form they upset the odds and beat Dinamo Zagreb 0-2 in Croatia.  Perhaps the biggest surprise was Schalke’s 1-1 home draw with Poak Salonika.

Our defeat was, apparently, an historic sporting occasion for a country who are only a decade or so into their relationship with the game.  Kazak prime minister, Serik Akhmetov, went into the home dressing room after the game on Tuesday to congratulate Shakhter and bask in the fruits of his sports development policies, but I hear there is trepidation ahead of their trip to Glasgow.

Top Russian TV analyst, Vasily Utkin, predicted, “Celtic will solve all the problems before second game, they will learn what mistakes they did in Astana and they will show their real power. If this happens I’m pretty sure Celtic will go through.

“In the previous round Shakhter beat Albanian champions Skenderbeu 3-0 but in Albania they were down 3-0.  They are the team whose emotions are very important.  If Celtic start the game well at Celtic Park, with all their songs from the stands and support given by their fans, the players from Karaganda may start the game on their knees.

“Their only chance will be on the counter attack.  Whether this will be productive is the question for Celtic.  A goal for Shakhter would complicate Celtic’s situation.

“I see Celtic reaching the Champions League group games. They are Champions League quality. Whatever Shakhter will do they are not Champions League quality, at least not yet.”

“This… is a question for Celtic” is the key phrase.  Champions League qualification is in our own hands.  Beat Shakhter Karagandy by more than 2-0 at home is as good an offer as anyone will get to qualify for the Champions League.

I don’t bet and admit to not knowing very much about how it works.

I thought it was the amount of money being wagered that set the odds.

    Emdy.

Parimutuel odds. The more money put on a result lowers the new odds on that event happening.

  2. So with Jim McColl apparently in lead position to take over that second div team, has anybody mentioned that he is a tax avoider?

  3. Just Watched that clown from sevCo mcmoist slebering his way through a interview about betting, what a embarrassment of a man waving bits of paper about , head nearly falling off his shoulders, not knowing rules about gambling absolute tool. HH

Sleekit is a total buffoon. Beyond embarrassing on every level.

He claims he doesn’t know the rules on betting within professional football. He’s a liar. Everyone who works in professional football is aware of rules on betting.

The SFA should take this joker to task for holding about a dozen sheets of blank paper in the air and claiming it was filled with names of players and match officials in the game who like to put a bet on.

If he doesn’t share the names he should have the book thrown at him on a disrepute charge.

  5. Townsend scores for Spurs in a breakaway? I remember him playing for Hearts and he was never fast.

When I was about 13, I was in hospital in Port Glasgow (ingrowing toenails, still not fixed). Jim Townsend’s father was in the next bed. He told me about the time he and his wife were at a Celtic v Hearts game.

Jim Townsend put Jinky up and the baying from the crowd included a Celtic fan sitting in front of them who yelled, “Come on referee. Get a grip of that D….O…..B.

At which point, Mrs Townsend tapped the wee guy on the shoulder…..

Excuse me. I’m his mother, this is his father and he was conceived after we were married…..And he’s a far better Catholic than you will ever be”

“Sorry missus”, replied the suitably chastised tim.

If any of you Bhoys get a text offering you a place in free prize draw for an IPad from text 85222 do not reply.

It is a scam and they will send you three texts a week offering you other comps.

They will charge you £1.50 per text whether you reply or not.

Swally admits they don;t know the rules at Ibrox. No shock there they never have.

How can the greatest administrator in football history not have told Swally about not being allowed to gamble when he was at Ibrox?

It just gets uglier and uglier over Ibrox way. I didn;t even think that was possible.

Green has played a blinder convincing the eejits he was no good and forcing him to sell his shares. Absolute master stroke.

Re: Corals 9/1 Karagandy to qualify

That was the price before the first leg.

Under no circumstances will Corals honour such a bet placed after 18:00 on Tuesday

Paddy Power were 4/6 this morning and offered 11/10 Celtic to qualify

Corals will play the ‘palpable error card’

Frankly and with all the respect due in the circumstances, anyone who thought any bookmakers would offer 9/1 Karagandy to qualify with a 2-0 lead shouldnt be let loose on a betting site

Bookies do make mistakes alright, not often, but they do. Usually however, they make mistakes in their own favour. Several times I’ve had to pull bookies both on course, and in shops, for paying out short or wrong odds. Their attitude its up to you to check.

Was at Shelbourne Park one night for the Irish Derby. There was a hot favourite in one of the earlier races and a mate of mine put 300 Euro on at 1-3. This hot fav duly romped home. My mate left it to later in the night to go and collect and the bookie paid him out 3-1 by mistake! He promtly scarpered and watched the Derby from Slatterys pub up from the stadium and bought pints for anyone he knew.

Thems the breaks I suppose, but my attitude is it is up to them to check.

    Marti

I agree completely – but there are errors and there are errors

I cannot believe the stupidity of anyone placing a bet today with a major bookmaker on their website or in a shop on SK to qualify at 9/1 and actually and genuinely expecting to get paid

  14. Kojo

Can’t agree with you on Ledley. I agree he doesn’t have that one stand out trade but he is the epitome of the team player. He not great at anything in particular but is pretty good at everything, not my favourite player but I think he helps the team. A Joe of all trades master of none if you will.

He’ll never be a stand out although there’s a decent amount of goals in him given work and the right system.

Also think your list of game changers is quite generous. I’d say from the current squad only Samaras, Stokes, Commons and Forrest have the ability to win us a game when we need something pulled out the hat. And only Commons does it on a regular enough basis.

  15. squire danaher on

    Desertbhoy

Anyone who backed 9/1 SK will get paid at the real price of 4/5

Corals will claim it was a “palpable error” -ie bookies get out of jail free card when they make a clear error – in that clearly the price wasn’t updated after the first leg

Even allowing for the argument they’ve kept the price up on their site,

you can’t seriously expect to be paid at 9/1 when the rest of the industry prices the bet between 4/6-4/5.

  16. Squire.. U miss the point.. They won’t get paid cos it won’t happen. They will not go through!!
