Historic Kazak win, view from Russia

1082

Celtic were not the only seeds to get a bloody nose in this week’s Champions League play-off round first leg games.  Lyon and Real Sociedad looked well matched before the game but Lyon’s 0-2 home defeat suggests the seeds were outclassed.

Austria Vienna were the team I wanted this round but despite indifferent domestic form they upset the odds and beat Dinamo Zagreb 0-2 in Croatia.  Perhaps the biggest surprise was Schalke’s 1-1 home draw with Poak Salonika.

Our defeat was, apparently, an historic sporting occasion for a country who are only a decade or so into their relationship with the game.  Kazak prime minister, Serik Akhmetov, went into the home dressing room after the game on Tuesday to congratulate Shakhter and bask in the fruits of his sports development policies, but I hear there is trepidation ahead of their trip to Glasgow.

Top Russian TV analyst, Vasily Utkin, predicted, “Celtic will solve all the problems before second game, they will learn what mistakes they did in Astana and they will show their real power. If this happens I’m pretty sure Celtic will go through.

“In the previous round Shakhter beat Albanian champions Skenderbeu 3-0 but in Albania they were down 3-0.  They are the team whose emotions are very important.  If Celtic start the game well at Celtic Park, with all their songs from the stands and support given by their fans, the players from Karaganda may start the game on their knees.

“Their only chance will be on the counter attack.  Whether this will be productive is the question for Celtic.  A goal for Shakhter would complicate Celtic’s situation.

“I see Celtic reaching the Champions League group games. They are Champions League quality. Whatever Shakhter will do they are not Champions League quality, at least not yet.”

“This… is a question for Celtic” is the key phrase.  Champions League qualification is in our own hands.  Beat Shakhter Karagandy by more than 2-0 at home is as good an offer as anyone will get to qualify for the Champions League.

  1. Remember we defeated Honved Budapest 4-0 in the centenary season? I see no reason why Celtic cannot inflict similar damage on Wednesday. It will be good to have the Green Brigade back but problems will arise again at some point. May I be proved wrong with that prediction.

Paul67 has taken some flak on here in recent days. He doesn’t need me to defend him but I would like to say that it takes some courage to do what he does. He seems very trusting and is always at risk of malevolence. Those who disagree with him should perhaps put their proper names next to their criticism of him. After all, his name is out in the public. Of course I don’t feel that we should always agree with Paul though.

A sad state of affairs we have managed to get ourselfs into.

But the balance sheet will be hunky dory, jeezo, we could put the balance sheet up front, that would scare the pants of any opposition, why didn’t we think of that before.

  4. Shieldmuir Celtic on

There are a lot of folk on here who seem to enjoy putting the boot into Peter Lawwell and sem to think that he runs the club simply to guarantee his pension. How ridiculous and ludicrous is that? They must have forgotten that he turned down an offer from Arsenal to double his salary and chose to stay at Celtic, the club that he loves. Perhaps these folk woulld rather ignore the truth and believe the Daily Record. Do they really support Celtic?.

No one on here “Enjoys putting the boot into PL”.We would all love to be singing his praises every week.We are all fanatical fans and love the club dearly. When he does well he deserves praise,as he has had for totally changing the way we operate in these difficult times.A great job.

When he screws up then he also deserves the flak, and he certainly deserves it for not having a striker in place for the qualifiers. An act of folly, that I and many more cannot understand.

Just a word on the people saying we cant attract quality. We pay our top players more than the vast majority of European teams.Top leagues included. We are also a great stepping stone for the EPLs riches.Winning trophies is also an added bonus for good players on less wages and winning nothing. This argument holds no water with me.

Again, honestly do you really think I give a fonkeys muck about your indignation when you so easily ignore Celtic supporters no as lucky as you. (I’ve went back over the conversation and now I’m scunnered at your double talk)

BTW you never answered, did you buy a ticket to the food bank game, remember them Celtic supporters, the ones who look to Celtic for escape from having to admit they need a food bank.

It was just after that question you decided I needed put in my place, with your indignant drivel, so go on answer, do you support the £10 conscience tarrif so the food bank can provide for the poor in our developed country ?

The Green Brigade will have Celtic Park rocking again on Saturday after an agreement was reached between the supporters group and the football club.

Talks have been going on for a number of weeks following Celtic’s announcement that they would close down the popular Section 111 of the ground due to health and safety concerns by Glasgow City Council. This afternoon an agreement was reached with a club statement expected on Friday.

Matters came to a head following the Celtic v Ross County SPFL match on August 3 when the club announced that the section 111 would have to close.

Two days later a club statement said: “The safety of all spectators is of paramount importance to Celtic Football Club. Given recent events, we have been left with no option but to take steps to ensure the safety of our supporters. We trust that supporters will recognise that the Club has been placed in an impossible position.

“It is therefore with extreme regret that for safety reasons, the Club has taken the decision to relocate supporters currently sitting within Area 111 of the Stadium, where there have been continued examples of unsafe behaviour. Supporters who do not wish to be relocated may choose to receive a pro rata refund and return their season ticket.”

The issue has been debated fiercely among online Celtic supporters with the majority backing the Green Brigade but not to the extent of putting the club at risk of sanctions from UEFA or the city chiefs.

Earlier today on various support forums it was announced that agreement had been reached with Section 111 open for business on Saturday and for the Champions League qualifier on Wednesday against Shakhter Karagandy.

You have been through one of the most traumatic times of your life, short of losing a close relative. I don’t know if you read my post a few months ago, when I had to put my most treasured Border Collie, who was a trained sheepdog and reared from a “One Man and his Dog” breed. She was the most wonderful animal,I have ever encountered, and I come from the farming community. But, they have their lifetime, and if treated well throughout their life, no owner has any incriminations. We just adored Arran and her memory will last as long as we live. Hope this helps.

I did not say that at all – once again you are not reading posts properly before you respond. Two other people have pointed that out to you. Seems like you just don’t take heed.

But it’s a total waste of time getting into an argument with a drunk in any situation, but especially on a public forum. So, I’ll leave it with this post.

  25. A Ceiler Gonof Rust - Supporting Wee Oscar through Thick and Thin on

I’ve just read back and saw the great news on the issue of section 111 being resolved. Hopefully there’ll be no more spats between the club and the residents of the section and we can all get on with supporting the team on match days.

BRTH, I’ve followed the posts on the petition you’ve raised and charitable effort you’re championing I hope it will achieve the target required to help this wee soul. It breaks your heart when you read about youngsters afflicted with such terrible diseases and sometimes you feel that as one person you can make no difference. I’d like to help in a small way if I can. Earlier this year with the kind help of CRC we auctioned off a special bottle of malt on the site and it achieved an amazing result for the wee Oscar fund. I’ll be bottling another cask in the next couple of months, a Craigellachie 11 Y.O. single cask, single malt. I don’t have the full detail as the cask is still in bond but I’ll get that to you in a few weeks when we have it moved to the bottling plant.

I would be honoured if you’d accept a bottle (I’m sure I’ll find one with a very special number) and you can get with CRC to see how to go about auctioning it here with any funds raised going to the MacKenzie fund.

CRC, hopefully see you in Glasgow at the end of September and we can discuss.

  26. Tell you what–Guillem Bailague would be the go-to man for Spanish midfielders. He is probably the most incisive football commentator on TV.Get NL or John Park to give him a ring.TET is right–there are 2nd and 3rd level Spanish players better than most SFPL professionals. If someone is offered for a loan don’t go near them unless they have been forensically examined re attitude and performance.Lassad and Miku took a fair whack of cash from the club. There are better players out there.Go look for them, and don’t rely on an agent.Give the team some guile–and take a look at the Spanish forwards as well.It used to be France producing the footballers. It’s now Spain, with Belgium and Germany coming up on the inside.

  27. Neganon, it was just a thought.
