Historic Kazak win, view from Russia

1082

Celtic were not the only seeds to get a bloody nose in this week’s Champions League play-off round first leg games.  Lyon and Real Sociedad looked well matched before the game but Lyon’s 0-2 home defeat suggests the seeds were outclassed.

Austria Vienna were the team I wanted this round but despite indifferent domestic form they upset the odds and beat Dinamo Zagreb 0-2 in Croatia.  Perhaps the biggest surprise was Schalke’s 1-1 home draw with Poak Salonika.

Our defeat was, apparently, an historic sporting occasion for a country who are only a decade or so into their relationship with the game.  Kazak prime minister, Serik Akhmetov, went into the home dressing room after the game on Tuesday to congratulate Shakhter and bask in the fruits of his sports development policies, but I hear there is trepidation ahead of their trip to Glasgow.

Top Russian TV analyst, Vasily Utkin, predicted, “Celtic will solve all the problems before second game, they will learn what mistakes they did in Astana and they will show their real power. If this happens I’m pretty sure Celtic will go through.

“In the previous round Shakhter beat Albanian champions Skenderbeu 3-0 but in Albania they were down 3-0.  They are the team whose emotions are very important.  If Celtic start the game well at Celtic Park, with all their songs from the stands and support given by their fans, the players from Karaganda may start the game on their knees.

“Their only chance will be on the counter attack.  Whether this will be productive is the question for Celtic.  A goal for Shakhter would complicate Celtic’s situation.

“I see Celtic reaching the Champions League group games. They are Champions League quality. Whatever Shakhter will do they are not Champions League quality, at least not yet.”

“This… is a question for Celtic” is the key phrase.  Champions League qualification is in our own hands.  Beat Shakhter Karagandy by more than 2-0 at home is as good an offer as anyone will get to qualify for the Champions League.

  4. Is it true that Dylan McGeouch is being allowed to leave on loan??

This is yet another tactical blunder by Neil Lennon. Dylan, in terms of product-per-performance, is a better prospect on the right that James Forrest.

He was our only performer against Madrid who did not look out of place before his injury.

He has also demonstrated vision and cleverness in his play in other games. These are attributes sorely missing from our midfield (except for KC).

I simply cannot fathom such a decision.

Twists N Turns – I will be there and I will be screaming myself hoarse

But it does not excuse the Board’s pathetic efforts in this transfer window. And lets face it its hardly the first time either.

They are out of excuses and without a striker we will be out of the CL – then the atmosphere will turn very ugly indeed.

It does feel a bit like a death in the family – but one where another relative caused that death.

At long last someone who see,s what is going on at celtic . The custodians are content to stay and play here , no effort even under proven cheating being discovered , to get us out of here . No ambition to build a team worthy of the support , were just investers in a business who will see very little return . Last season we had the makings of a very good side , a couple of quality signings to compliment what we already had , now its at least 4 quality signings required . I know, i know , it aint going to happen . Last years team would have back heeled karandy . Now i pray we do it , but its by no means a stick on .

  7. tommysbhoy, just read your posts.Three years ago our Westie,Haggis by name, was knocked down.We were bereft, the wife more so since the wee dog adored her.I finished up taking the boat across to a place below Durham to buy a Lakeland cross.I was told I was daft to go so far for a dog.It was one of the best decisions I ever made.He and I got to know each other as I drove up to Stirling to spend time with my grandkids. He was 6 months old at the time.Three years later he has been to all the grandkids houses and parties. They love him.He has to go to Donegal in the holidays and thinks he’s one of the kids.Take my advice–go look for a homeless dog. You’ll know the one you want when you seeit, and so will the dog when it sees you.Take care–it is a sad sad thing to lose a friend.

  8. having lost jake 2 years back through illness my girlfriend recently rescued a pitbull from the dogs trust..it brought back quickly the reasons i love these animals and the commitment we make to them..he’s 18 months young and an amazingly affectionate trustworthy beast.he’s my chanel of consolement and comfort..its my kids who have the biggest heartache as they live away with their mum and they are the be all and end all..h.h

Stay strong kiddo, time, as with a close relative, heals all. The kids will enjoy any pup you bring in. Personally, not attempting to influence you, we would look to take a badly looked after rescue dogs. That is just our choice. We have had the most wonderful service, love and protection from a lab, german pointer, cross 12 yrs past, and he is without doubt the boss of the manor. Hope this helps.

It’s ok for those who don’t rely or base our life on the results of a sport but this is Celtic and we both know many are looking to the team for an escape from their routine.

  17. Raymac/ Tommysbhoy,

Sorry your post was followed by the resident troll whose wages we all paid for some time, yet it’s something he feels no need to be grateful for.

First dog in our family when I was a wean was a Westie as well.

She loved sitting on the window sill with the cats, so we wonder if she thought she was one! It would explain her subsequent 9 lives – don’t worry, I won’t give all 9 recounts :))

First one was me trying to stop her running out the close as she was excited – she ran right onto the road in front of a double decker bus. I was only one to see this (apart fae the bus driver who was possibly a former rozzer hence why he felt no need to stop).

I watched aghast as this wee white body rolled around for about 200 metres – she stopped. Got on her feet. Shook herself. And then proceeded to chase the bus for several miles. A weedgie dug if ever I saw one :)) What I won’t forget is when we eventually got her, she had a flamin tyre mark on her body, yet was uninjured.

Her 2nd defiance of the grim reaper came when she survived an accident along with the rest of the family (excluding me) when they were travelling down from Aviemore on the A9 – wheel came off the car, it rolled. Everyone survived, but the old dear came off the worst and spent two weeks in hospital. Oor wee westie was found about half a mile from the accident – she’d crawled using her front two paws (her back legs didn’t recover for 6 months) to try and get to safety.

That was the first dug I grew up with – a big part of the family, a big part of my life, and she wasn’t slow in putting me right when I was a misbehaving brat !

Since then, I’ve enjoyed the company of several dugs – they are amazing friends – but only decent folks would appreciate that.

Anyhow got a trial for Coloplast Sensura in the morning so it’s mighty night

  19. Not surprised Swansea offloading Ki.

He looked decent on his debut with great variation in his passing.

Then became a convert to the Neil Lennon philosophy of ineffective sideways and backwards passing and removed the diagonal pass from his game.

I thought PL did well to get the fee for essentially a skillful guy who played safety first football with no positive contribution to his team.

Maybe Laudrup felt there was a player there but has now realized that the safety first approach is to ingrained.

Hope Rogic does not end up the same way as he has some delightful skill but fear our coaches obsession with mostly meaningless possession will turn him into a cautious player who will always take the safest option.

it has happened to McGeough the raw recruit who scored a sensational goal on his debut is now a shell of that guy who seems to have opted for the safest sideways or backwards pass.
