CELTIC striker Jonathan Afolabi has agreed a short-term loan deal with Airdrie.

The 22-year-old Irishman is standing by to make his debut this afternoon in the League One game at home to Montrose, according to a report in the Daily Record.

Earlier in the season, Afolabi, who joined the Hoops from Southampton in August 2019, was at Championship club Ayr United, scoring once in 16 appearances. He has previously been on temporary transfers at Dunfermline and Dundee.

Airdrie have previously brought players in on loan deals from Celtic, and Afolabi joins Brody Paterson in the current squad, with Kerr McInroy having joined Championship side Ayr United following a successful spell at New Broomfield.

Boss Ian Murray told the club website: “Jonathan is a big, physical striker who has gained good experience on loan.

“He’s a left-footed player with great power, and he will bring us something different in the forward areas.

“We look forward to working with him and would like to thank Celtic for their co-operation again.”

The Dublin-born frontman, who has represented the Republic of Ireland at various youth levels, is still waiting to make the breakthrough at Parkhead.

Ange Postecoglou is keen for the player to get valuable game time.
